• A voting rights measure was the first Civil Rights legislation since Reconstruction
• Cut deficit by reducing taxes

• Brown v. Board of Education (1954) – Warren Court ruled school segregation was unconstitutional
• Warren Court–Banned state-sanctioned
prayer in public schools–State-required loyalty
oaths unconstitutional – The Warren Court
brought about change in federal and state reapportionment and the criminal justice system
• CONGRESSIONAL REAPPORTIONMENT– Reapportionment – the way
in which states redraw election districts based on the changing number of people within those election districts
– Baker v. Carr (1962) – “One Person, One Vote” Should be equal representation in each district. Not one district have 100,000 people, and one district having 500.
• RIGHTS OF THE ACCUSED– Mapp v. Ohio (1961)
Court ruled that evidence seized illegally could not be used in court
– Gideon v. Wainwright (1963) criminal courts had to provide free counsel for those who could not afford it
– Miranda v. Arizona (1966) must be read your rights
• No president in the post-World War II era extended the power and reach of the federal government more than Lyndon B. Johnson
• The “war on poverty” was successful
• Johnson’s tax cuts (deficit spending) helped spur the economy
