What is Communication?
A process in which two or more computers or devices transfer data, instructions, and information.
Basic communications system equipment • Two computers, one to send and one to receive
data• Communications devices that send and receive
data• A communications channel over which data is
sent
Networking the Classroom, School, and District
Reasons for installing networks in schools• Hardware and software resource sharing• Allow communications between schools and other
organizations• To connect both students and teachers to the
Internet
Many colleges, universities, and K-12 schools have installed wireless notebook computers
and other wireless devices.
What is the Internet?
A worldwide collection of networks that link together businesses, governments, educational institutions, and individuals using modems, telephone lines, and other communications devices and media.
Internet uses• Virtual world and social networks• Shop for goods and services• Take a course or access educational materials
How the Internet works• When a computer sends data over the Internet,
the computer’s software divides the data into small pieces, called packets.
What are Packets• Email messages• Files• Documents• Graphics• Request for files
World Wide Web (Web)Worldwide collection of electronic documents that have built-in-hyperlinks to other related documents.Hyperlinks: users can navigate quickly from one Web page to another. ( Username password document)
Web Browser SoftwareA program that interprets HTML and displays Web pages and enables the user to link to other Web pages and Web sites.
Search EngineA specific type of search tool that finds Web sites, Web pages, and Internet files that match one or more keywords you enter. (Google, Bing, Yahoo, Ask)
Internet Services
E-mail: transmission of messages and files through a computer network.
Today email allows administrators, teachers, and students to interconnect with millions of Internet users all over the world.
Newsgroups
Online area where users conduct written discussions about a particular subject.
ChartroomsCommunications mediums, or channels that permits users to chat with each other
controlled/ monitored chartrooms are available for K-12 students and teachers
As the Web grows in size and operates at higher speeds, it will continue to have a major influence on restructuring K-12 education.
