Natural Selection is a process that causes animals to change their looks and behaviors over time.
A niche is the role an organism plays in its environment.
Competition over resources only occurs between animals of the same species.
Plants and animals chose whether or not to adapt to their environment.
Adaptations can determine whether or not an organism survives.
I. Adapting to the EnvironmentA. Natural Selection – when conditions in the environment favor certain characteristics over others
What will happen to the population of beetles?
Males peacocks with more visible feathers have a greater chance to attract mates and pass on their genes.
B. Adaptation – the behaviors and traits of a species change over time.
1. Caused by natural selection
As peacocks born with most visible feathers were able to reproduce more often, the size of feathers on peacocks grew larger from generation to generation.
C. Niche – the role of an organism in its habitat
Species Adaptations on Galapagos Islands
II. CompetitionA. Competition – struggle between organisms over the same limited resources
What will happen to the population of birds?
2. Species use special adaptations to reduce competition.
Example: birds that share the same tree but adapted to nest and feed in different parts of the tree
