The electrical system is of 12-volt negativeearth type. Power for the lights and allelectrical accessories is supplied by alead/acid type battery, which is charged bythe alternator.

This Chapter covers repair and serviceprocedures for the various electricalcomponents not associated with the engine.Information on the battery, alternator andstarter motor can be found in Chapter 5.

It should be noted that, prior to working onany component in the electrical system, thebattery negative terminal should first bedisconnected, to prevent the possibility ofelectrical short-circuits and/or fires.

Early models1 The fuses are located behind the switchpanel on the right-hand side of the dashpanel. Access to them, is gained by removingthe two screws from the front of the switchpanel, and pivoting the panel downwards (seeillustrations).2 The fuse locations are numbered togetherwith the respective current rating, and thecircuits protected are as follows:Fuse 1 17 amp Direction indicators, stop

lamps, reverse lamps,heated rear window andwarning light

Fuse 2 12 amp Interior lamp, hazardwarning, lighter

Fuse 3 8 amp Sidelamps, tail lamps,number plate lamps, panellamps, automatic gearselector lamp (if applicable)

3 In addition to the main fuses, in-line fusesare provided to protect the following circuits:Rear fog lamps line fuse is normally located

behind the switch panel.Wiper, washer and heater motor lines fuses are

normally located in the engine compartmenton the right-hand wing valance.

4 Always renew a fuse with one of identicalrating, and never renew it more than oncewithout finding the source of the trouble(usually a short circuit).

1985-on models5 On 1985-on models the fusebox is locatedbelow the right-hand side of the facia (see

illustration). To remove the cover, twist theretainers using a coin. Each fuse is colourcoded as follows:

3 amp Violet 10 amp Red5 amp Tan 15 amp Blue

6 1985-on models are also fitted with threefusible links in the first part of the battery “+”cable. If a number of circuits fail to work, checkfor battery voltage at the fusebox input side.7 If a fusible link has failed, disconnect bothbattery terminals. Carefully cut back the bindingand remove the sleeve from the “+” cable.Unsolder the failed fusible link and renew it withone of the same size. Cover the joints withinsulating tape and reconnect the battery.

1 The flasher units are located on thefuseboard behind the switch panel on theright-hand side of the dash panel.2 To remove either one of them, disconnectthe battery negative lead, then remove thetwo screws and pivot the switch paneldownwards. The direction indicator flasherunit is located on the left of the fuseboard,and the hazard flasher unit is located to theright of it. Pull the required unit directly fromthe fuseboard to remove it.3 Should the flashers become faulty inoperation, check the bulbs for security andmake sure that the contact surfaces are notcorroded. Check all the relevant wiring andterminals. If the flashers are still faulty and therelevant fuse has not blown, renew the flasher

unit. If the fuse has blown, a short circuit maybe the cause of the failure.

The ignition switch is an integral part of thesteering column lock, and removal andrefitting procedures are given in Chapter 10.

Removal

Pre-1985 models1 Remove the steering wheel (Chapter 10). 2 Disconnect the battery negative lead. 3 Remove the screws retaining the steeringcolumn cowls together and to the outercolumn bracket. 4 Separate the cowls and withdraw theright-hand cowl over the wash/wipe switch(see illustration). 5 Disconnect the multi-plug connectors tothe wash/wipe switch, direction indicatorswitch and lighting switch. 6 Remove the left-hand cowl over thedirection indicator switch, leaving the chokecable attached. 7 Loosen the securing screw, and withdrawthe combined switches from the upper column.

1985-on models8 Remove the steering wheel (Chapter 10).

9 Disconnect the battery negative lead.10 Remove the screws and withdraw thesteering column cowl lower half, followed bythe top half.11 Lift the clips and pull the fibre optic guidesfrom each side of the switch.12 Depress the retainers and withdraw theswitch. Disconnect the wiring multi-plug.

Refitting13 Refitting is a reversal of removal, but aftertightening the switch assembly clamp screw,position the striker bush with the arrow pointingtowards the direction indicator switch.

Removal1 Remove the steering wheel (Chapter 10). 2 Disconnect the battery negative lead.3 Remove the screws retaining the steeringcolumn cowls together and to the outercolumn bracket.4 Separate the cowls and withdraw theright-hand cowl over the wash/wipe switch.5 Disconnect the multi-plug connector to thelighting switch.6 Remove the left-hand cowl over thedirection indicator switch. The lighting switchcan now be removed from the cowl bydepressing the plastic ears (see illustration).

Refitting7 Refitting is a reversal of removal, but makesure that the switch is fully entered into thecowl.

Removal1 Disconnect the battery negative lead.2 Open the door and locate the courtesy lightswitch on the front door pillar. Remove thesingle screw and withdraw the switch (seeillustration). 3 Disconnect the supply wire and tie a looseknot in it to prevent it dropping into the pillar.Remove the switch.


1 An auxiliary circuits relay is fitted in thewiring harness on all models, and is locatedon the right-hand side wheel arch on right-hand drive models and on the left-hand sidewheel arch on left-hand drive models. Therelay and line fuse are connected in the heaterand wiper circuit and protects the ignitionswitch from overloading (see illustration).2 All models are equipped with a circuitjunction diode to protect the variousinstruments fitted with semi-conductorsdevices.

Note: From late 1986, all models were fittedwith a headlamp dim-dip system whichprevents the vehicle from being driven withthe sidelamps only illuminated. A unitmounted in the right-hand front of the enginecompartment controls a resistor fastenedbehind the radiator grille and right-handheadlamp surround, so that whenever the

sidelamp and ignition are switched on at thesame time, the headlamp dip beams light atone-sixth of their normal output.

Removal

Metro and Metro L models1 With the bonnet open, pull the socketconnector from the rear of the headlamp, andwithdraw the rubber cover (see illustration).2 Release the clip and remove the headlampbulb.3 To remove the headlamp unit, first removethe plastic radiator grille. Prise off themounting clips and lower the unit from theadjustment screws (see illustration).

Metro HLE, 1.3S and 1.3 HLS models4 With the bonnet open, pull the rubber coverfrom the rear of the headlamp (seeillustration).5 Pull the socket connector from the bulb(see illustration).6 Release the clip and remove the headlampbulb (see illustration).7 To remove the headlamp unit, first removethe plastic radiator grille.8 Remove the sidelamp and directionindicator bulbs.

9 Unscrew the four mounting nuts, one ofwhich is located under the front wing (seeillustration). Remove the washers. 10 Withdraw the headlamp unit from the frontof the car (see illustration).

Refitting11 Refitting is a reversal of removal, butmake sure that the lug on the bulb flangeengages with the notch on the reflector, andadjust the headlamp alignment as describedin Section 13.12 Do not touch the bulb glass; if touched,clean it with methylated spirit.

Note: Lamp bulbs should always be renewedwith ones of similar type and rating as listed inthe Specifications.

Sidelamps and front indicatorlamps

Metro and Metro L models1 Remove the lens from the front bumper (2screws) (see illustration). 2 Push and twist the bulbs to remove them.

Metro HLE, 1.3 S, and 1.3 HLS models 3 To remove the sidelamp bulb, pull back therubber cover and pull out the bulb holder (seeillustration). Push and twist the bulb or pull itstraight out (as applicable) to remove it.4 To remove the indicator bulb, pull back therubber cover and turn the bulb holderanti-clockwise from the headlamp reflector.Push and twist the bulb to remove it (seeillustration).

Side repeater lamp5 Reach up under the front wing, and pull thebulb holder from the lamp body.6 A wedge type bulb is fitted; pull it straightfrom the bulb holder. 7 When refitting the bulb holder, support thelamp body and lens from the outside. If thelamp body is displaced, use adhesive to stickit to the wing (see illustration).

Rear lamp cluster 8 Open the tailgate. Remove the two screwsand the air vent (see illustration). 9 Remove the four screws and withdraw thelamp lens (see illustrations). 10 Push and twist the faulty bulb to remove it(see illustration). Note that the stop/tail bulbhas offset pins and can only be fitted in oneposition.

Rear number plate lamp 11 Where twin lamps (secured by screws) arefitted, press and twist the lamp lens to removeit (see illustration). Where a single lamp isfitted, squeeze together the grips andwithdraw the lamp, then twist the bulb holderanti-clockwise to release it.12 Where twin lamps are fitted the bulb is awedge type; pull it straight from the bulbholder (see illustration). Where the single

lamp is fitted, press in the bulb and twist itanti-clockwise to remove it from the bulbholder.

Rear foglamp13 Remove the two screws and withdraw thelens (see illustration). 14 Push and twist the bulb to remove it.15 Note that the lens is tapered; the narrowend must face the side of the car.

Interior lamp16 Prise the lamp from the roof (seeillustration).17 Where the lamp is part of the clock, prisethe bulb from its clips; where the bulb only isfitted, press it in and twist it anti-clockwise torelease it.18 Do not trap the wires when refitting thelamp.

Switch illumination19 Disconnect the battery negative lead.20 Remove the switch panel, (Section 7).21 Remove the bulb holder from the switch.A wedge type bulb is fitted; pull it straightfrom the bulb holder.

Instrument panel warning lamps22 Remove the instrument panel asdescribed in Section 14.23 Twist the relevant bulb holderanti-clockwise and remove it.24 A wedge type bulb is fitted; pull it straightfrom the bulb holder.

Ignition warning light bulbwattage25 The wattage of the ignition warning lightbulb has been increased from 1.2W to 2W onlater models. This has the effect of lowering

the engine speed at which the warning lightgoes out (alternator cut-in speed).26 If it is wished to lower the alternator cut-inspeed on earlier models, a 2W bulb may besubstituted for the existing one.

Luggage area/loadspace,glovebox and footwell lamps27 On Van models, squeeze together itssides and unclip the loadspace lamp lens toreach the bulb; on all other types gently prisethe lamp from its location (having firstremoved any retaining screws). 28 The bulb is a festoon type; prise it out ofits clips.

Heater control illumination bulb -removal and refitting29 Carefully work the heater control lampfree of its retainer.30 Separate the bulbholder from the lens andextract the bulb from the holder (seeillustration).31 Fit a new bulb and reassemble the lamp,then press it back into position.

Automatic transmission selectorillumination bulb - removal andrefitting32 Unscrew the gear selector knob and liftthe cover off the selector. 33 Remove the selector slide to expose thebulbholder (see illustration).

34 Pull the bulb out of the holder and press ina new one. 35 Reassemble the selector unit.

1 The headlamp alignment should bechecked every 12 000 miles (20 000 km) or 12months, whichever occurs first.2 It is recommended that the alignment iscarried out by a Rover dealer using modernbeam setting equipment. However, in anemergency, the following procedure willprovide an acceptable light pattern.3 Position the car on a level surface with the

ride heights correct, the car normally ladenand the tyres correctly inflated, approximately10 metres (33 feet) in front of, and atright-angles to, a wall or garage door.4 Draw a horizontal line on the wall or door atheadlamp centre height. Draw a vertical linecorresponding to the centre line of the car,then measure off a point either side of this, onthe horizontal line, corresponding with theheadlamp centres.5 Switch on the main beam and check thatthe areas of maximum illumination coincidewith the headlamp centre marks on the wall. Ifnot, turn the plastic knobs located on the rearof the headlamps; turn both knobs to raise orlower the beam, and one knob (either will do)to move the beam horizontally.

Note: Later models may be fitted withinstrument panels made by Veglia instead ofby Smiths. The two makes can bedistinguished without dismantling. Themileage recorder window edges arechamfered on the Smiths panel, but square onthe Veglia panel. Instruments and componentsare not interchangeable between the twomakes. It is therefore important to specifywhich is required if spare parts are needed.Because of the different internal design of itsinstruments, the Veglia panel is not fitted witha voltage stabiliser.

Removal

Early models, except MG1 Disconnect the battery negative lead.2 Prise out the speedometer cable grommetfrom the bulkhead, and pull out the cable torelease it from the speedometer head.3 Remove the switch panel, described inSection 7. Pull the pivots from the supportsand allow the panel to hang by its harness.4 Unscrew the nuts securing the instrumentpanel housing to the facia. Withdraw thehousing and at the same time disconnect themulti-plug connectors from the printed circuitboard (see illustrations).

5 From the rear of the housing, twist the threeupper bulb holders, anti-clockwise andremove them (see illustrations).6 Remove the screws securing the threeinstrument panel sections, noting that thecentre section screws are shorter (seeillustration).7 Carefully withdraw the instrument panelsections and printed circuit, taking care not todamage the latter (see illustration).8 Each individual instrument can now beremoved by removing the nuts or screwssecuring it to the panel. On 1.3 models, thedigital clock can be removed from thetachometer by loosening the dial screws andwithdrawing the clock reset control. Ifnecessary, remove the front panel (seeillustration).

Pre-1985 MG Turbo models9 Remove the instrument panel (as fromparagraph 1 to 4, this section).

10 Undo the securing screws to release theinstrument cluster from its housing. Releasethe clips to separate the instruments from thelens unit. Do not touch the instrument faceswith the fingers.11 If it is wished to remove the temperaturegauge, the speedometer must be removedfirst.12 When removing the tachometer, firstrelease it from the casing, then extract the

boost gauge and unplug the printed circuit.13 If it is wished to remove the fuel gauge,the tachometer must first be removed asdescribed above.14 With all the instruments removed, theprinted circuit may be renewed if wished, asdescribed in Section 15.Note: The higher wattage of the ignitionwarning light bulb - this should bedistinguished by having a red holder.

1985-on models15 Disconnect the battery negative lead.16 Remove the switch panel, as described inSection 7, sufficiently to disconnect the wiringmulti-plugs. Remove the panel.17 Remove the air cleaner (Chapter 4), thenprise out the speedometer cable grommet.Disconnect the cable by pulling it from thespeedometer. If the cable is tight, remove thefusebox cover, reach up behind theinstrument panel and squeeze the outside ofthe connector to release it (see illustration).18 Remove the remaining screws, takingcare not to drop them (see illustration).

19 Move the panel down and rotate it torelease it from the facia. Disconnect the wiringmulti-plugs and withdraw the instrumentpanel through the steering wheel (seeillustrations).20 The warning and illumination bulbs maybe removed by twisting the bulbholder anti-clockwise, but note that the “no-charge” bulbin the red bulbholder is the only bulb whichcan be separated from its holder (seeillustrations).21 The multi-function unit incorporating thefuel and temperature gauges may be removedafter withdrawing the cover (3 nuts) and unitretaining nuts (see illustration).22 To remove the printed circuit, first removeall the bulbs and the multi-function unit. Peeloff the tape and remove the connector pegs. 23 To remove the speedometer head,remove the illumination bulb holders and thetape from the printed circuit. Free the wires

and remove the shroud and windowassembly. Release the face plate from thecase and remove the trip reset control.Remove the screws and withdraw thespeedometer head.24 Removal of the tachometer is similar tothe procedure for the speedometer head, butthe fuel and temperature gauges must first beremoved.

Refitting25 Refitting is a reversal of removal, butmake sure that the reset controls, wherefitted, pass through the holes in theinstrument panel window. When fitting themultifunction unit, if applicable, tighten thenuts evenly to ensure good contact with theprinted circuit.

Removal1 Remove the instrument panel as describedin Section 14.2 Remove all the bulb holders from the rear ofthe housing.3 Pull the voltage stabilizer from the bladeconnectors (see illustration).4 Remove the cross-head screws andwithdraw the blade connectors from theprinted circuit.5 Unscrew the retaining nuts and prise outthe plastic retainers from the printed circuit.6 Where a digital clock is fitted in the base ofthe tachometer, remove the brass screw, liftthe printed circuit, then refit the screw toretain the clock.7 Remove the remaining screws andwithdraw the printed circuit.

Refitting8 Refitting is a reversal of removal, withreference to Section 14 as necessary.

Removal1 Disconnect the battery negative lead.2 If a radio is fitted, disconnect the supplyand earth leads, and the aerial. Remove therear mounting bolt and two side screws, andplace the radio to one side. 3 Remove the cigar lighter button. 4 Pull the supply wire from the cigar lighterterminal. 5 Unscrew and remove the cigar lighter andearth lead (see illustration).


Removal1 The single-note horn is located in theengine compartment on the left-hand side(see illustration).2 To remove the horn, first disconnect thebattery negative lead. 3 Disconnect the wires from the hornterminals.4 Unbolt the mounting bracket and removethe horn.5 If the horn emits an unsatisfactory sound, itmay be possible to adjust it, assuming the

internal circuit and contact points are in goodcondition. The adjustment is best made withthe horn mounted on the car. Turn thehexagon head (Mixo type) or screw (Lucastype) until the best sound is achieved (seeillustration).


Removal1 Prise the speedometer cable grommet fromthe engine compartment side of the bulkhead.2 On 1985-on models, the fusebox cover andif necessary, the air cleaner.3 Pull the cable straight out of the bulkheadto release it from the speedometer head (seeillustration).4 Unclip the cable from the swivel clip.5 Remove the windscreen washer bottle andplace it to one side.6 Unscrew the knurled nut and pull the cablefrom the pinion housing on the left-hand sideof the gearbox.7 Withdraw the speedometer cable, and ifnecessary remove the inner cable andgrommet. If either the inner or outer cable isdamaged or worn, renew the completeassembly.


1 The wiper blades should be removed whenthey no longer clean the windscreen ortailgate window effectively.2 Lift the wiper arm away from thewindscreen or tailgate window. 3 Lift the spring retainer, then separate theblade from the wiper arm (see illustration). 4 Insert the new blade into the arm and makesure that the spring retainer is engagedcorrectly.

Removal1 Disconnect the battery negative lead.2 Remove the air cleaner (Chapter 4).3 Extract the clip from the linkage pivot onthe motor crank lever. 4 Remove the bushes, washer and links fromthe crankpin.5 Unscrew the nut and remove the washerand crank lever from the motor spindle.6 Unscrew the motor mounting screws anddisconnect the wiring multi-plug.7 Disconnect the earth lead and withdraw thewiper motor.

Refitting8 Refitting is a reversal of removal, but beforefitting the crank lever, temporarily reconnect

the battery and switch on the ignition (wiperswitch “off”) to set the motor in the “parked”position. Fit the crank lever horizontally andfacing the driver’s side of the car. Lubricatethe linkage bushes, crankpin and linkageswith a molybdenum disulphide based grease.

Removal1 Disconnect the battery negative lead.2 Remove the air cleaner (Chapter 4).3 Lift the hinged covers on the wiper armsand unscrew the nuts (see illustration). Prisethe wiper arms from the spindles with ascrewdriver.4 From each pivot housing, unscrew the nutand remove the washer and spacer.5 Disconnect the wiring multi-plug and theearth lead.6 Slide the rubber mounting from the bottomof the bracket, noting which slot engages thebracket.7 Remove the wiper motor and linkagetogether from the car.

Overhaul8 Extract the clips from the crankpin andpivot arms, and remove the links, bushes andwashers, noting their relative positions. 9 Remove the wiper motor as described inSection 20. 10 Remove the bottom spacers from thepivot housings, drill out the rivets, and removethe housings from the bracket.

11 Press the bushes out of the links.12 Examine the bushes and pivot housingsfor wear, and if worn excessively, obtain a kitof bushes and clips.

Refitting13 Refitting is a reversal of removal, but notethe following additional points:a) Lubricate the pivots and bushes with a

molybdenum disulphide based grease.b) Press the bushes into the links in the

direction as shown (see illustration),note that the rounded ends of the linksmust face outwards.

c) Fit the pivot housings (with the longerlever to the driver’s side of the bracket),using new rivets.

d) Tighten the pivot housing nuts to 11.5 lbfft (17Nm).

e) With the motor in the parked-position, fitthe wiper arms to the spindles so that theblades are parallel to the lower edge ofthe windscreen.

Removal1 Disconnect the battery negative lead.2 Lift the hinged cover on the wiper arm andunscrew the nut. Prise the wiper arm from thespindle with a screwdriver, together with thespacer.3 Unscrew the nut and remove the washerand spacer from the motor spindle.4 Prise the trim panel from the tailgate innerpanel using a wide-bladed screwdriver (seeillustration).

5 Disconnect the earth lead and the wiringmulti-plug.6 Remove the mounting bracket screws, andwithdraw the wiper motor and gearbox (seeillustration).7 Note the location of the wires in themulti-plug, then depress the tags and removethe pins.8 Remove the insulating sleeve, and detachthe pins from the wires.9 Unscrew the through-bolts and withdrawthe motor from the gearbox.10 The motor and gearbox can be renewedseparately if necessary.

Refitting11 Reassembly and refitting are a reversal ofthe removal procedure, but note the followingadditional points:a) Make sure that the lug on the motor is

engaged with the notch on the gearbox(see illustration).

b) Adjust the armature endfloat by looseningthe locknut on the gearbox, turning thescrew to eliminate the endfloat, thenloosening the screw very slightly to give asmall endfloat. Tighten the locknut.

c) Before fitting the wiper arm, switch on theignition and operate the motor to set thespindle in the “parked” position. Fit thewiper arm to the spindle so that the bladeis parallel to the lower edge of the tailgatewindow.

d) Note that the tailgate washer bottle andmotor are located on the left-hand rearinner panel (see illustration).

1 On all MG Turbo models, a combinedreservoir is mounted in the left-hand rear ofthe luggage compartment, with two remotepumps located on the inner panel. The twoidentical pumps are connected to a singletube leading from the reservoir, andincorporate non-return valves in the outlettubes to the windscreen and tailgate window.2 For non-Turbo models, separate reservoirsfor the windscreen and tailgate window arefitted to early models, being located on theleft-hand front of the engine compartment andthe left-hand rear of the luggagecompartment. From VIN 556719, models withfront and rear washers have a combinedreservoir in the left-hand front of the enginecompartment. Models with windscreenwashers only have a single reservoir with anintegral pump, located on the left-hand frontof the engine compartment (except MG Turbomodels). The integral pump is retained in thereservoir by a rubber grommet (seeillustration).

Removal1 Both the windscreen and the tailgatewasher pumps are located at the rear of MGTurbo models, and they share a commonreservoir (see illustration).

2 Open the tailgate, remove the washerreservoir and release the left-hand quartertrim.3 Identify the pump to be removed. (Thewindscreen washer feed tube is blue).Unscrew the pump mounting screws anddisconnect the tubes and wires from thepump. Be prepared for some fluid spillage.4 Release the pump bracket from themounting rubber, but do not remove thebracket from the pump. The pump cannot beoverhauled, and should be renewed ifdefective.

Refitting5 Refitting is a reversal of the removalprocedure. Note the following points:a) A new pump will need to be pop-riveted

to the mounting rubber.b) The pump inlet is marked “-” and the

outlet “+”. c) The non-return valve outlet is marked “-”.

6 Check for correct operation on completion.

Removal1 Open the tailgate and release the left-handquarter trim.2 Disconnect the windscreen washer tube(the blue one) from the non-return valve.3 Secure a length of stout string to the tube,using sticky tape or some similar means. Thestring must be longer than the tube.

4 Open the bonnet and extract thewindscreen washer jet. Disconnect the tubefrom the jet and from any clips. Disconnectthe battery earth lead.5 Partially withdraw the facia, as described inChapter 11, to gain access to the aperture inthe left-hand front pillar. Pull the tube throughfrom the engine compartment, then pull theother end of the tube (with string attached)through from the rear of the car.6 Remove the string from the old tube andsecure it to the new tube. Carefully draw thenew tube through from the front to the back ofthe car.7 Remove the string and connect the tube tothe non-return valve. 8 Feed the tube into the engine compartment,refitting the grommet if this has becomedisplaced. Connect the tube to the jet andengage any clips.

Refitting9 Refit the disturbed trim, reconnect thebattery and check the windscreen washer forcorrect operation. Remember that it will take asecond or two for the pump to fill the new tube.

24.1 Washer reservoir and pumps - MG Turbo models

1 A headlamp washer system is fitted tocertain models, according to territory and trimlevel specified.2 The system is similar in principle to thefamiliar screen washer systems, but a relay isincluded in the headlamp washer pump circuitso that the pump does not operate when thelights are not in use.3 The components of the headlamp washersystem are as shown (see illustration). Thereservoir is mounted under the left-hand wing,and the jets are positioned in the bumperoverriders.4 No specific dismantling or overhaulinformation is available at the time of writing.The pump cannot be repaired, and must berenewed complete if defective. It is a push fitinto a grommet at the base of the reservoir.

1 A factory-fitted trip computer is available asan optional extra on certain models. Thecomputer receives information from a speedtransducer in the speedometer cable andfrom a fuel flow transducer in the fuel supplyline. From these data and from its internalclock, the computer is able to displayinformation relating to journey time, averagespeed, average and instantaneous fuelconsumption and distance covered.2 Very little is possible for the homemechanic by way of testing or repair of thecomputer and its transducers. In the event ofmalfunction, check first that all electricalconnections are secure and that the battery isfully charged.3 A faulty speed transducer (or speedometercable) can be deduced if the trip computerfails to display distance (DIST) information.Obviously this will also affect the fuelconsumption (INST and AVE) functions, but sowill a faulty fuel transducer.4 A faulty fuel transducer can be deduced ifthe fuel used (FUEL) information is grosslyincorrect.5 Testing of suspect transducers. or of thecomputer itself, is by substitution of a knowngood unit. No repair is possible.

Pre-1985 MG Turbo models

1 Disconnect the battery earth lead.2 Remove the ashtray away from the facia.3 Carefully prise the clock mounting out ofthe facia and disconnect the multi-plug.4 Press the retaining lugs to release the clockfrom its mountings.

1985-on models

5 Where the clock is mounted on the facia,prise it out and disconnect the multi-plug.Reverse the procedure when refitting.6 Where the clock is mounted in theoverhead console, prise out the interior lampthen remove the screws and lower theconsole. Disconnect the multi-plug andremove the clock.


Removal1 Disconnect the battery negative lead. 2 Disconnect the supply and earth wires fromthe radio, leaving the in-line fuse and chokeintact. 3 Remove the aerial from the radio. 4 Unscrew the rear mounting bolt and twoside screws and withdraw the radio from thecar (see illustration).

Note: The radio/cassette player is retainedwith DIN clips and it is necessary to make atool using dowel rod, but the ends of the rodsmust be shaped to contact the clips.

Removal1 Disconnect the battery negative lead. If theunit has a security code, temporarilyde-activate the code and re-activate it whenthe battery is re-connected; refer to theinstructions and code supplied with the unit.2 Prise the plastic covers from each side ofthe unit (see illustration).3 Insert the special tool rods into the holesuntil they engage the clips (see illustration).4 Press the ends of the rods outwards so thatthe clips are compressed, then pull out theunit from the facia.5 Disconnect the multi-plug and aerial andremove the tool rods.

Refitting6 Refitting is a reversal of removal, but makesure that the rubber support pads are in placebefore pushing the unit into the facia until theclips are engaged.

Removal1 Disconnect the battery negative lead.2 Remove the trim pad and, except for on thetailgate, peel off the polythene sheet.3 Disconnect the wiring multi-plug(s) to themotor.4 On the tailgate, remove the mountingbracket screws, unclip the mounting bracketfrom the private lock and unclip the operatingrod from the lock lever. Remove the privatelock then remove the mounting bracket andmotor, and unbolt the motor.5 On the front or rear door, unbolt the motorand disconnect the operating rod.
