1.1.1TheHistoryofMultimediaComputerswith multimediafeatures were introduced

in the 199OEs.Before that, there was no technology capableof providinginformativemultimediaat an affordablecost. In its

early days, multimediatechnologywas not very well received

by the masses especiallyamong skeptical membersof theacademia.

Multimedia technology was considered to be an

invention gimmick of the computer industry. Nowadays,theview towards the importance of multimedia is very different.

For the past decade, this technology has been studied andexplored and now, multimediais one of the main components

of convergenttechnology.

Thefirst personalcomputerwas marketed.It hada low

processingpowerandwas usedmainlyfor accountingandinventory.

Thestoragecapacityof the hard-diskwas increased.Computerscoulddisplaysimplegraphicsandwereusedforstatisticsandforecasting.

Computerswerecapableof displayingcolors,moresophisticatedgraphics,animationand sound.Theywere usedin word processinganddesktoppublishing.

Computersat this stagewerecapableof integratingdigitalvideo,audio,animationandtext in a digitalenvironment.As a result,itincreasesthe emphasison communicationand sharingof informationthroughnetworkssuchas the Internet.

Each multimedia application involves interactivity with end-users.

Users can take part actively in the multimedia applications and not

passively as in the conventional components of media. This is because theusers have total controlover the applications.Interactivitycan be simple,such as

DigitalVersatileDiskor DVDtechnologywassaidto betheDsuccessorof theCDROMtechno|ogy.ADVDdrivecanstore4.7

gigabyteof data on a singlesurfaceof a DVDdisk, whichis seven

timesthe capacityof a CD. Moreover,manyDVDdrivescan storedata on bothsidesof a DVDdisk whichdoublesits storage

capacity.In addition,the transferspeedof a DVDdrive is muchfaster than a CDROM drive.
