Chapter 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Introduction

The modern world is a scenario characterized by

knowledge explosion as a result of scientific study and research

and the chain reaction brought about by the expanding

evolution of theories. A theory begets theory resulting in a

continuum of endless refinement of knowledge and ideas. All

these are recorded in voluminous literature either in print or

audible materials. The most interesting and challenging part of it

is that this accumulated knowledge in the history of mankind is

not simply contained in a vacuum. They are active dynamic

forces influencing human behaviour, lifestyle, quality of human

existence and destiny of the world. The great challenge,

therefore, is to gain access to this world of knowledge and to

utilize it for one’s own growth and the betterment of every

individual person and of the world at large. But if the wealth of

knowledge and technology has made life easier, enjoyable, and

comfortable and forecasts a promising future, these are

practically reserved to those who have acquired and who have

realized that such skill has become imperative in today’s world.

Thus, before anyone can profit from the fruits of the

achievements in the past until the present, necessarily, a

historical leap is inescapable. Every individual person who has

access to information is a product of a whole gamut of historical

painstaking undertaking and evolution, which individuals have

not to go through anymore because knowledge has been made

available in one single historical moment. Therefore, people are

supposed to be able to decode words whether inscribed or

spoken because they contain and express profound meanings

necessary for a meaningful existence in today’s world.

Furthermore, they are capable of leading others and taking in

their hands the destiny of adaptability through modern world

today.

Purpose and Description

This research is designed to categorize and arrange

record circulation for big companies. Basic purpose of calendar

organizer is actually managing (grouping, sorting, searching,

opening) of user's events of plans and dates with a help of one

unified interface. Such software should allow you quickly to

catalogue and organize information about all your professional

and personal events/occassion such as birthday, holiday and

some important events etc. With a help of effective organizer

you should be able to arrange library by events, by dates and

more. There are a lot of specialized products that can be used to

handle your documents, but it is not necessary to use only some

single-purpose records planner. Some products can be used for

two or several purposes at the same time.

Objectives of the Study

• To create a system that organize date and events

schedule.

If you are a person who carries around a notebook of paper and

a pen just to make notes to yourself or to remember important

bits of information. This organizer software offers space and

forms to keep journal entries as well as notes, and each entry

has an automatic date and time stamp for added convenience.

• To study a system that runs in Android platforms.

Compatibility between this software and the Android operating

system.

Scope and Delimitation

The application is limited only for the function of temporal

orientation, scheduling, tracking, reminding, retrieval & recall.

Roans’ Time is designed to help organize upcoming

events and schedules.

Definition of Terms

To aid the readers for better understanding of the study,

the following terms are defined operationally:

Temporal Orientation - Like clocks, calendars orient us in time.

Instead of hours, we refer to them to determine the day, month,

and year. We also use them to orient to events in time that are

relevant to us but may have no relationship to the Gregorian

calendar.

Scheduling - Scheduling is a complex task of balancing

constraints and priorities.

Tracking - Where scheduling is an activity of advanced planning,

“tracking” records events that happen in the present, typically

for reference later. Contacts, medical conditions, and spending

habits are among the examples of things that are tracked.

Reminding - Calendars assists of users’ future events. Users may

also include non-appointment information to aid memory, such

as recurring anniversary-types dates, and “to-do” lists -

information that exists only to remind, in fact. Reminding can be

opportunistic as well - when scheduling an event, one may be

reminded of some other deadline that occurs on that same day.

Retrieval & Recall - Temporal association of information can

assist in retrieval and recall. Some information may be

deliberately recorded in calendars for later retrieval, but

retrieval may be opportunistic as well. Several subjects said that

they will sometimes look through their calendars to locate the

spelling of a name or a lost phone number that they previously

recorded.

Computer - In this study, the term means the machine to be

used in processing the proposed game.

Review of Related Literature

According to ISO 9241-11 [1998] and ISO 13407

[1999], the preconditions of software usability evaluation are to

identify the usability goals, to specify the use context of the

software and to determine the usability measures. The usability

goals are the targets a software product intends to achieve.

They indicate the specified target group of users to complete

predefined tasks in the specified environment.

Most of the usability studies about mobile devices and

applications [Ketola and Röykkee, 2001; Po, 2003] have taken

examples only from single user interfaces.

Conversely, research about groupware usability [Neale et

al., 2004; Grundy et al., 2002; Baker et al., 2002] focuses on

analyzing applications designed for desktop and laptop

computers. Even though Tang et al. [2001] explored awareness

issues that facilitate mobile groupware communication, they did

not mention about possible usability evaluation methods in the

field.

Kristoffersen and Ljunberg [1999] made their empirical

studies of mobile work in two settings—telecommunication

service engineers and maritime consulting staffs. They found

that the context in which these people use computers differs

very much from the office. Kristoffersen and Ljunberg disclosed

that the work context of mobile and traditional office

environment is different from each other.

Ketola and Röykkee [2001] affirm that the user interface

interaction elements affect the usability of mobile phones. They

categorize mobile user interface elements into input, display,

audio and voices, ergonomics, detachable parts, communication

method and applications. Other interaction elements include

external interface and service interface. The external interface

contains user support, accessories, and supporting software

while the service interface refers to the service provider’s

services.

These aspects seem relevant for Roans Electronic

Organizer (REO) in respect of mobile use context and

information arrangement. They could be part of the reference

sources in specifying REO usability requirements.

This chapter deals with the methods used by researchers

in developing the application “Roan’s Electronic Organizer” .

Specifically, it discusses the software development procedures,

the data gathering techniques and the respondents of the study.

Research Design

Among the methods of research, the researchers used the

descriptive design of research because they aim to observe and

study other case studies in order to create a new and more

productive software technology. The questionnaires or survey

form was created and used to gather data from the respondents

of the study.

Research Instrument

The researcher made used of questionnaire, document

analysis, Internet research as data gathering tools, to identify

the requirements needed to develop the proposed application.

Questionnaires

The researchers used the survey questionnaires because

it is easy to analyze. Data entry and tabulation for nearly all

surveys can be easily done with many computer software

packages.

Respondents of the Study

The research respondents are the android phone users

which later this application will be deploy.

Data Collection Procedure

Before starting the actual development of the software, it

is highly important to understand the software design that the

researchers will create. The requirements gathered from the first

phase are studied in this phase in specifying hardware and

software requirements.

For the software design phase, the requirements gathered

in the previous phase were carefully analyzed for a better design

of the software game. In this phase, it is very important to keep

track on the requirements needed.

System Development Procedure

In the development phase of the actual software, the

researchers followed the steps and procedures of PROTOTYPING

MODEL as their guide in the development of the software.

Requirements or gathering data was the first procedure

executed; the researchers collected all the required data, they

used books use by preschooler as their guide and basis in

creating the design which was the next procedure implemented,

in this phase the researchers used interactive images as the

primary element in creating the design. To make the images

more interactively and to suit with children, the researchers

used ”Adobe Photoshop” , a photo editing software in editing the

images. After the design phase creating the prototype was next

done. With the used of powerful software Visual Basic 6.0/ Visual

Basic .Net as the programming language, the researchers

created the prototype. In this phase the software was almost

done but it is not yet fully functional, that’s why the researchers

proceeded to the next step of the procedure which was the

integration and testing phase, in this phase the actual testing of

the software was done, to check if there still bugs to be fixed.

Finally the software is almost done. As the final phase of the

development which the maintenance phase, the researchers

deployed the software to the target users and to some of the

faculties to test the functionality and effectiveness of the

software, and to asked for their concerns about the software or

their recommendations if possible to be added to make the

software well functioning and effective.
