Telling a story....

Program design is about taking your reader (funder) on a journey that is well-thought, sequential and logical to the problem you’ve just detailed in the Scope/Need

The methodology has to be presented/written in a way that your reader can see her/himself participating in the program, that it flows methodologically and logistically

The simplicity of the logistical details has to correlate with the conciseness of why this method will be effective

Page 14: CHANGEMAKERS + GRANTMAKERS = PARTNERSHIPS THAT …...intended action and outcomes you hope to accomplish and are singular. Objectives: Objectives are more specific, describing the

Program Design is derived from the Needs/Rationale

➔ Program Design should be “best practices” and design has to be aligned with program rationale, or “the why” - this is crucial

➔ Research, research, research - from all angles

◆ Research the problem and with an emphasis on promising “best practice” models or pilots addressing this same need

◆ Or, you may have to focus on the lack of “best practice” model and detail why your program design is the solution based on the research you’ve done

➔ Program methodology is closely aligned with Program Budget - methods have to link directly with funding sought

http://kern.org/grants Program Design

Program Design/Methodology Program Design: A description of your program, goals, objectives and activities leading to positive outcomes (connected to your statement of need/problem in the previous proposal section.) It includes a definition of the population served, the partnerships you will have with other agencies and the changes you plan to make (impact).

➔ Program methodology is closely aligned with Program Budget - methods have to correlate with funding sought

➔ Use power words/phrases like: provide, prepare, empower, catalyst, strengthen, leverage, catalyze, maximizing impact

◆ Objectives: Objectives are more specific, describing the strategy that will accomplish the goal and how many people will be served within a time period.

◆ Activities: How the objective will be accomplished; the action(s) spelling out how the objective will be achieved.

Components - Program Design

All of this must be connected to the Needs Statement & “best practices” Activities have to make sense & link with the budget

Additional Components - Program Design

Utilize Subheadings for organization, clarity, flow

➔ Program Design may also has to have:

◆ An Implementation Timeline - A Scope of Work is essential

◆ A Management Plan: How will staff time be assigned and stated in the budget?

◆ An Evaluation Plan (sometimes this is a separate funder ask)

◆ Sustainability component/explanation

➔ These have to be a part of the program methodology as they relate to your budget, evaluation and sustainability points in your proposal

➔ Implementation Timeline: Choose your start date and work backwards with design and logistics - it is usually the logistics that delay/cause the greatest barriers during implementation.

➔ Management Plan: Your staff and percentage of work time - must correlate with your budget and detailed in your budget narrative. Also include partners and their salary portions (include this in your narrative.)

Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina

Our Mission: In response to God’s call and in the spirit of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, the Foundation strategically uses resources to reduce poverty through action, advocacy and leadership. Our Vision: Families in South Carolina have the resources to live out of poverty. History: In the spirit of The Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina began its journey in philanthropy in May of 1996. For twenty-two years, the Foundation has been committed to providing resources so that individuals and families can “live out of poverty” and has invested over $67 million in the areas of education, health, and social services through more than 2,938 grants in all 46 counties of the state.

Page 26: CHANGEMAKERS + GRANTMAKERS = PARTNERSHIPS THAT …...intended action and outcomes you hope to accomplish and are singular. Objectives: Objectives are more specific, describing the

Grantmaking: In 2017, we funded 185 nonprofit organizations. We offer three categories of funding that are “open” (any nonprofit in South Carolina serving the poor may apply): Caritas (provide support to organizations dealing with situational poverty and/or fundamental needs of individuals and families in South Carolina), Community Enrichment (supports proven organizations, existing programs with proven success, strategic planning, collaborative projects, or other justifiable programs that go a step further than meeting immediate needs), and Immigrant Families Initiative Grants (supports organizations dedicated to enhancing the health, well-being and economic mobility of immigrant, mixed-status and refugee families). Initiatives and Public Policy work: We not only invest in organizations that help reduce poverty, we’ve started some of our own initiatives to help tackle some of the biggest challenges we see. Leveraging our experience, resources, networks and skillsets, we address core issues of poverty in our state. Through our action, advocacy and leadership, we are working to meet the needs of the underserved and building stronger families in the process. We support the following foundation led initiatives: Collaboration for Ministry Initiative, Kinship Care Initiative and Immigrant Families Initiative. We also launched and still support a very successful Fatherhood Initiative. Within our Kinship Care and Immigrant Families work, we build relationships with government stakeholders as well as host gatherings, rallies and other events to lift up these very important issues in South Carolina.

United Ministries serves and empowers those on the transformative journey to self-sufficiency. Our vision is a community working together to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive in Greenville. The grant from the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina supports: The United Ministries-Interfaith Hospitality Network community is deeply committed to assisting congregations to help homeless families with children find home and hope in Greenville and the Upstate. In partnership with local congregations and Homes of Hope, United Ministries provides short-term and intermediate housing assistance and other supportive services to young mothers with children. Many of these young women will have completed the Serenity Place addiction recovery program, and be certified participants in ongoing support programs modelled after Anderson Interfaith Ministries' Women and Children Succeeding program. During the current grant, United Ministries expects at least 75% of those participating in this Upstate Collaboration for Families' Success (UCFS) to obtain permanent housing through Homes of Hope, many through the LoCAL housing initiative.

CODA + Hope Haven are stronger together than we are individually. We also recognize the close intersection of the issues of child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault. That is why we merged into Hopeful Horizons so that we can expand our impact in the community. With a combined history of almost 70 years, we are able to empower victims, educate the public and provide a one-stop shop for victims of violence and abuse. By uniting into one organization, we are putting the victims’ needs first and sending a powerful message that we all have a part to play in ending the cycle of violence and abuse.
