Health: Medications at School –

The following refers to all medications, both prescription and “over the counter.”:

A physician must complete a medication release form and the parent or guardian for each medication prescribed.

o Prescription medications are medicines that require a written prescription from a health care practitioner.

In order for a child to be given a prescription medicine at school, the child’s parent or guardian should MUST sign a permission form. A permission form for prescription medicines is provided on pg. 2643.

o Because the instructions for some medications require more space

than is provided on the form, some health care practitioners may prefer to use a practice specific form.

(Jennie, can you make this more clear? I don’t understand…). All medication must be brought to the office in its original container. Parents are required to transport medication to school and hand to the teacher or front desk receptionist. Students CANNOT bring or take medication independently, even over the counter drugs (this includinges cough drops). Students may only take what medication they have at school, in the office, with and have a signed medication release form on file.

Grading:

Elementary and Middle School (Grade 1-8):

The Provision School is a STANDARDS-BASED school. 1. Grades will be used on report cards for all courses taken for credit. The grades will be based on the standards that each student is working on towards. Each student’s report card will be custom to their program and progress..

Students receive 4 grades:

4 = Thorough Understanding A score of (4) indicates that a student exceeds a standard by consistently demonstrating an advanced level of understanding &/or the ability to apply their knowledge at a higher level.

3 = Adequate Understanding A score of (3) indicates that a student has independently achieved the standard. The student demonstrates mastery of the standard.

2 = Partial Understanding A score of (2) indicates that a student is developing an understanding of a standard, but still may be in need of additional instruction &/or support.

1 = Minimal Understanding A score of (1) indicates minimal understanding of a standard. The student shows limited evidence of understanding the standard.

High School (Grades 9-12)

2.In the HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM ONLY, Sstudents enrolled in high school (9-12) will still be working on skills, receiving a score of 1-4, but will also receive numerical and alpha grades on transcripts for transfer and college acceptance purpose.

Interpretation of letter grades is as follows: A = Excellent progress toward meeting course objectives and learning

outcomes (90-100%). B = Above- average progress toward meeting course objectives and learning

outcomes (80-89%). C = Average progress toward meeting course objectives and learning

Grade Point Average (GPA)1. The following numerical equivalents will be used in computing the GPA from report card letter grades:

A = 4.00 B = 3.00 C = 2.00 D = 1.00 FE = 0.00

2. 4. Three GPAs are computed for secondary students:a. A quarterly GPA will appear on each quarterly report card. It is derived by performing the following procedure:

1) The credit value of each course receiving an A, B, C, D, or FE for the quarter will be divided by the number of quarterly grades that the course receives during the year (quarterly credit).2) For each course receiving an A, B, C, D, or FE, the quarterly credit will be multiplied by the grade points awarded for that course.3) The sum of the products from (b) above will be divided by the sum of quarterly credits.

b. A final, end-of-year GPA will appear on the final report card, the student record card, and the computer- printed student record card. It is derived by performing the following procedure:

1) The sum of the products of the quality points awarded in each attempted course is multiplied by the credit value in the same course.2) The sum of those products is divided by the sum of the credits attempted.

c. A cumulative GPA is calculated for all courses bearing credit and appears on the computer- printed student record card in the summary section, provided that the student’s history file is current. It is derived by performing the following procedure:

1) The sum of the products of the grade points awarded in each attempted course (receiving an A, B, C, D, or FE) is multiplied by the credit value in the same course.

Behavior: With the nature of emotional and behavioral issues that some of our students face, there may be times that a student’s behavior requires them toat they leave the classroom. TPS The Provision School has a small “quiet room”,”room, which is utilized as a multifaceted room for children to use as sensory room in a "crash and bump" style or a calm down roomatin suchthese times as a safe place to calm down. The student may choose to go into that room as a choice to play or get sensory needs met, prevent an escalation or OR they may choose to go in theire with the assistance of a staff member.

This e quiet room is intended for "crash and bump" play and is not intended to be a place of punishment at any time. It is a tool to help students have options to help them calm down and/or have their sensory needs met.

The student will be required to stay in the quiet room until their behavior and words are safe and appropriate to return to the classroom. This is NOT A PUNISHMENT, but a means of creating a safe environment for all students. Teachers will always proactively and retroactively follow connecting principles from TBRI in the process of using the quiet room.

It's primary focus is to meet the sensory needs of students through a "crash and bump" style of play. There are mat, foam pieces, and other soft play objects for students to use while in this room.

Students also have a secondary option to voluntarily go to this room when they are feeling overwhelmed or stressed. This room can be used as a calm down space giving the child a safe place to go if they need.

The student will usually be left aloneallowed time alone in the quiet room, especially if they are behaving violently, to give them a chance to calm without restraint being necessary. A staff member always will remains outside of the quiet room to keep an eye on the student through the window and/or video camera. However, in rare casesIn extreme cases, iIf the a student escalates to a point where they will harm themselves or others, The Provision School mayintains the right need to use this room as a safe place to restrain take him or her outside of the classrooma child. While a child is escalated in this form, they will never be left alone in the room. Restraint of a student will always be a last resort. In this event, an incident report will be written up; parents and administration will be given a copy of the incident report and filed in the student’s record. We want the quiet room to be a safe place for all students and not a disciplinary room.

The teachers and/or school personnel will try other methods of de-escalation before a restraintusing this space or restraint is initiated, unless it is an emergency situation.

If a student repeatedly becomes aggressive or a harm to self, we, as The Provision School, may need to evaluate if we have the facility and staff to meet the needs of the student or if a better placement would be more appropriate.

The Provision School will never allow any parent or untrained personnel to restrain a child; only those individuals that have received and maintain a Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification will be allowed to restrain, and only when absolutely necessary. This is for the safety of both students and staff. In this event, an incident report will be written up; parents and administration will sign offbe given a copy on eachof the incident report and filed in the student’s record. .

If a student’s behavior escalates to the point of restraint, there may be a need to call 911, specifically if a student is purposely harming themselves or others or cannot be calmed after an extended period of time. This will be done at the discretion of the administration and staff of The Provision School. AIn this event, an incident report will be written up; parents and administration will sign off on each incident report and filed in the student’s record.

If the behavioral incident is such that 911 must be called, the staff at TPS will review ifwhether TPSThe Provision School is this is the correct placement for your child, and will need to create a written plan with the parents and staff to guarantee safety for all before the student is allowed to return.

No personal photography equipment, including those on cellular devices or camera, is allowed during the school day unless explicitly allowed by school personnel for a specific reason.

Certain events, such as specific field trips and graduation, may allow the use of personal photography equipment.

Dating/Relationships Students are discouraged from dating peers.

These relationships have proved to be counter-therapeutic and typically distract students from their academic and other social skill development.

Dating relationships prove counter-therapeutic not only to the two students involved, but to the other students in the school as well. For this reason, dating relationships are strongly discouraged. We realize we cannot prohibit students from dating outside of the program, but strongly encourage parents to monitor all outside dating relationships.

Inappropriate touching is prohibited! This includes hugging, kissing or touching in any provocative or aggressive

Dating relationships-Students are discouraged from dating peers. These relationships have proved to be counter-therapeutic and typically

distract students from their academic and other social skill development. Dating relationships prove counter-therapeutic not only to the two students

involved, but to the students in the milieu as well. For this reason, dating relationships are strongly discouraged. We realize we cannot prohibit students from dating outside of the program, but strongly encourage parents to monitor all outside dating relationships.

Policy on Touch:According to the Association for Play Therapy, "When a child experience touch from a caring and safe caregiver, many things happen to promote healthy growth. Children develop a sense of self and the ability to relate to others; they learn to modulate affect, regulate their behavior, and develop a belief in their own self-worth and ability to master their environment." At The Provision School, we believe that appropriate, safe touch is a normal aspect to the day.

Touch can be used in a variety of ways, such as: "Hands and Eyes"

o A TBRI practice asking the student for their hands to connect and eye contact.

Symbolic touch when touching is uncomfortable for a child Fist bumps High fives Pats on the back or shoulders Occasional and appropriate hugs Joint compressions for sensory needs Hand squeezes

The Provision School staff is trained in appropriate touch and Crisis Prevention Intervention®. We also understand that for some children, appropriate touch will be limited due to trauma or sensory issues. The Provision staff's primary goal is that all children will feel safe and secure within our school by both staff and students, andstudents and will use wisdom when using touch. It is also our general practice to ask permission before touching to guarantee the child has a say about their personal body space.

We welcome feedback from parents in knowing their children's sensitivities andwhether touch is a trigger.

Student Counseling Services It is our main priority to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students. Not only is this important because students show less anxiety and stress during the school day, but also research points to higher academic success when a student feels safe in their environment.

At The Provision School, therapeutic support is woven throughout every area of our school from the classroom to the playground. It is provided to our students during the school day during general instruction, daily nurture groups, and monthly focus groups. If we find that a student needs additional support, help navigating a difficult situation, or has an issue arise during their school day, we have two licensed clinical counselors available through either prescheduled Student Counseling Sessions(SCS) or through On Demand Student Counseling Sessions(OSCS). These are fee basedfee-based sessions that are charged at a significantly reduced rate. Below are explanations for each type of session.

Student Counseling Sessions (SCS) Students attending The Provision School are eligible to receive discounted Student Counseling Sessions (SCS) at a rate of $40/hour. A SCS is a pre scheduled, one on one session either during or after school. For your convenience, our counselors will schedule either 30-60 minute30-60-minute sessions for your

On Demand Student Counseling Sessions (OSCS)There may be a time during a school day when it may be necessary for your child to receive counseling services which is why we now offer On Demand Student Counseling Sessions (OSCS). This is an unplanned, one-on-one session with a counselor needed during school hours in order to help your child de-escalate and/or work through any immediate issues they may be dealing with. These sessions could be anywhere from 15-min to an hour, depending on what the counselor deems is sufficient to help you child cope with their present situation. As your child’s guardian or parent, you have the option to determine whether you will make the decision for your child to receive an OSCS or give permission for our counselors to determine whether your child will receive OSCS if needed during the school day. If your child receives an OSCS, you will be informed of your child’s session via email within 24 hours letting you know which counselor they saw, the length of the session, and a brief overview of what was discussed with your child. These sessions will be billed at the reduced rate of $40 per hour and you will be charged for these

The School will not be responsible for financial obligations arising through the unauthorized use of the system.Personal ResponsibilityWhen you are using the The Provision School’s network, it may feel like you can more easily break a rule and not get caught. This is not really true because whenever you do something on a network you leave little "electronic footprints," so the odds of getting caught are really about the same as they are in the real world. But the fact that you can do something or think you can do something without being caught does not make it right to do so. Even if you don't get caught, there is always one person who will know whether you have done wrong -- and that person is you. Your use of the Iinternet can be a mirror that will show you what kind of a person you are.
