• This act would Pardon most former confederates– Now Nearly all white southerners could vote
and hold office again.• Changed political balance in the south
– Voted for Democrats

• Lynching – mob violence and death by hanging.– Misbehavior, or suspected of crimes
• Success and Failure- Reconstruction– Recover from war far from over– New Agriculture still poor and rural– Greater equality no promise of freedom
