...This is because it represents the unity and collaboration of diverse colours. Though each colour remains distinct, it is when they come together harmoniously that rainbow is formed in the sky, with its allure and attractiveness.

“When values and knowledge become one, there cannot be a more powerful instrument for the welfare of humankind. Mankind should take only what is needed from the creation and the world around oneself. We are standing on the threshold of a new era wherein material science and spirituality will move forward hand in hand”

A Journalist once asked Amma what her favorite colour is.

Amma replied that her FAVORITE COLOUR IS THAT OF THE RAINBOW...

Renowned Spiritual Master who was conferred the Gandhi - King Peace Prize in 2002 at UN, Geneva.

WelcomeBased in the Coimbatore campus, the office of Head - Research and Projects, is envisioned as a platform to encourage and enhance research among the faculty of Amrita School of Engineering. Our faculty pool, drawn from institutions of longstanding repute from India and around the world, represents our biggest asset - knowledge. Each of them has served in professional capacities at national and international levels. Apart from this, we augment our knowledge through a distinguished roster of visiting faculty who share their knowledge and help craft and organize research programs. We also benefit from their suggestions towards our proposals and protocols. They also play a key role in helping sources of support towards essential projects. The department also invites speakers and hosts conferences to augment the knowledge on offer in our premises. It gives me great pride to introduce this catalogue, which offers insights to our research capabilities and areas of expertise.

Amrita Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (AMBE)This state-of-the-art centre was established in 2007 as a center of excellence under the national “Mission Reach” program, to develop knowledge and expertise in the field of biomedical science and engineering, and thereafter, to effectively utilize that knowledge in building low-cost electronic and mechanical biomedical devices and sensors. The first ever patent (“Dual Microcontroller - Based Liquid Infusion System” awarded by the United States Patent and Trademark office - USPTO Patent No: 8,034,019 B2) awarded to Amrita at this center, was based on work done on the insulin pump.

On the devices front, several devices such as a low-cost insulin pump, X-ray digitizer, skull implants, etc. have already been developed and many more (such as, MEMS-based insulin pump) are in the pipeline. On the sensors front, the center is focused on development and fabrication of a variety

of biosensors (including immunosensors) for the qualitative and quantitative determination of biomolecules such as glucose, cholesterol, creatinine, HbA1C, vitamins, and DNA. The sensors are developed using nanomaterials and are nonenzymatic, and hence exhibit very high sensitivity, selectivity, and storage stability. Other work includes the fabrication of a lab-on-a-chip (LOC) for cancer and for the analysis of glucose, cholesterol, and creatinine in body fluids.

The center is ideally equipped to meet these objectives through facilities sponsored by the Govt. of India as well as significant grants by Amrita University, via a combination of the following: Machining center, Electrochemistry lab, Electronics lab, Plastics Machinery, and Measurement lab. The center also boasts of a Class 10,000 cleanroom with a Class 100 device-assembly area.
