A Revolutionary Christmas Planned for UMW General Meeting on December 2 A special treat is planned this year for the Chamblee First United
Methodist Women’s annual Christmas dinner and general meeting
on Tuesday, December 2.
Piedmont Compatriot Bill Kabel will give a
presentation on “A Revolutionary Christmas,”
which depicts the beginning and evolution of
Christmas holiday traditions. He will show various
gifts and toys as well as the festivities of meals
and other celebrations of Christmas from the
1500s until today. Mr. Kabel became a member
of the Sons of the American Revolution two years
ago, and he presently chairs Piedmont Chapter’s
Veterans Committee.
You won’t want to miss this special night of fun. Josh Roberts and
some men from the church will be cooking our meal. UMW Officers
for 2015 will be installed. All UMW members and prospective
members, along with their spouses or significant others are
encouraged to attend. (Yes, even some of the husbands are brave
enough to join us!) The cost per person is $8. Sign up will be through
your Circle Chairperson.

UMW Sponsors Church-Wide Event to
Pack Health Kits for UMCOR Our Chamblee UMW unit chose to collect and assemble UMCOR health kits for our Social Action
Project for 2014. We decided to involve the entire congregation by publishing a list of items needed,
and provided a box to drop off items at the church.
The project culminated at our Wednesday Night Supper on September 10th. Our guest speaker was
Deaconess Jo Sheetz, District Social Action Chairperson. Jo gave us a brief description of UMCOR
and how it uses the relief kits to serve people wherever and whenever the need arises.
After her informative talk, we all joined together to assemble the kits.
We assembled and packed 150 kits to be taken to the UMCOR Sager Brown distribution center in
Baldwin, LA. In addition to the kits assembled, we sent approximately 160 washcloths, 35
toothbrushes, 25 bars of soap and several boxes of bandages. We also presented a $250 check to
UMCOR to cover the purchase of toothpaste and transportation charges.
Prior to the event, two circles had already put together some of the kits. The Circle of Friendship did
50 kits and the Alma North Circle did 25 kits. The total contribution from Chamblee UMW unit was 225
kits.

UMW Sponsors Church-Wide Event to
Pack Health Kits for UMCOR (Continued) After completing the kits, the group joined hands in a circle and asked blessings for all who assembled
the kits and for all those who will receive them. The event was very meaningful, and a wonderful time
of fellowship was had by all in attendance.
We especially want to thank our Social Action Chairpersons Penny Rose and Mary Lou Dennisson for
their communication and flawless execution of this event. We overheard one of our senior church
members say that it was the most fun she’d had in a long time!

2014 Women’s Retreat at Cohutta Springs We found it! After several years of trying different places to
host the annual Women’s Retreat, we discovered a beautiful,
peaceful, serene setting in Cohutta Springs Conference Center in
North Georgia. Set on a peninsula on a lake, every room had a
lake and mountain view. In our free time, we enjoyed walks around
the lake and sitting on the porch chatting. We loved it so much that
we already have reserved September 25-27, 2015, for next year’s
retreat, so mark your calendars ladies!
Dr. Rev. Royeese Stowe brought us the theme of God’s Simple
Paths, based on Mother Theresa’s book A Simple Path. We had a
chance to think about and to draw our own spiritual journeys. We
talked about prayer, faith, love, service and peace, and all the
ways, both big and small, where we see examples in us and in
others.
Best of all, we got to know a little bit more about each other. We are grateful to Betsy Zint and her
team for organizing this event. You can see by the smiles on the faces of these beautiful women just
how much this weekend meant to all of us. We hope you will join us next year!

The Beautiful Women of Chamblee Methodist Church—Come and Join Us!
Circle Highlights
Chamblee First offers five active circles for women of all ages
and stages of life. The goal is to connect women with other
believers that can grow together spiritually and support one
another in their walks through life.
Fannie Tapp After taking a break during the summer, the Fannie Tapp Circle is gearing up for another good year. Our September meeting was held at the church with Linda Mattingly as hostess. We have the following events on our schedule: Friday, September 26: Serving at the Community Kitchen. We
will gather with our food at the church at 9:30 a.m. and go to Grace UMC. We will serve disadvantaged women and children a full meal from 11 a.m.-12 noon and return to the church by 1 p.m.
Tuesday, October 7 at 9:30 p.m.: Circle meeting at the home of Glenn Todd. This is one week earlier than usual.
Our Circle voted in the Spring to collect enough items for 24 UMCOR Health Kits. Our collections were used in the church wide packing event at Wednesday Night Supper. We also participated in the “Stop Hunger Now" event on Saturday, September 13. Finally, looking back to May, we had a wonderful meeting hosted by our Emeritus ladies in their small meeting/dining room. We enjoyed delicious food, good fellowship, and an informative program on UMCOR, which was led by Circle Chairperson Ann Hammond. Fannie Tapp Circle meets every second Tuesday during the school
year in a member's home at 9:30 a.m. for fellowship and food,
sharing of praises and prayer concerns, UMW business, and a
program. We end by noon. (See note above about a change for the
October meeting.) New members are always welcome. For more
information, contact Chairperson Ann Hammond at 770-452-7259 or

We are women with a Purpose!
United Methodist Women shall be a
community of women whose purpose is to
know God and to experience freedom as whole persons
through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship;
and to expand concepts of mission through participation
in the global ministries of the
church.
Circle Highlights (continued) Alma North The Alma North Circle is very involved with many different mission
projects. Since the last report, we donated $100 to the Belize mission
trip, $60 to Wounded Warrior (we have contributed to every war/
conflict since WWII), and $500 to the Prison Mission. We also put
together 24 health kits for UMCOR, 14 cosmetic bags filled with
goodies and slippers for the Prison Mission, and donated 20 book
bags for My Sister’s House as a back-to-school project for homeless
children.
Because of our participation in the book bag project, the Alma North
Circle won a drawing of all participants from the Buckhead office of
Raymond James & Associates where one of our members, Debbie
Healy, works. Raymond James paid for all of us to go to Hickory
House for our August meeting dinner!
This fall we will be feeding the Chamblee High School football team
(100 players) and selling Christmas wreaths with profits to go towards
Murphy-Harpst Children’s Center for Abused Children and the
Chamblee FUMC Restoration project.
Our meetings are the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. We
either meet at a member’s home or at a restaurant. For more
information, contact Becky Craven at 770-457-3834 or
Jessie Wallace Mary Lou Dennison and Penny Rose were very busy this summer
getting ready for the church wide event to put together health kits for
UMCOR. They did a great job communicating with church members
and coordinating collection of items from the circles, as well as
coordinating the event itself.
Jessie Wallace Circle meets the second Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a
member’s home. For more information, contact Fran Scott at
770-457-3344 or [email protected].
Whole Hearted Schedules of work at and from home keep us all very busy. Varying
vacation schedules prevented us from meeting over the summer, but
we were able to gather in August. We participated in Stop Hunger
Now in September.
We invite women who are seeking daytime fun, faith, and fellowship to
come join us. We begin our meetings at 10 a.m. the third Monday of
every month in Room 204 during the school year, with childcare
provided. For more information, contact Kathryn Rodriguez at
678-546-1428 or [email protected].

Circle Highlights (continued)
Circle of Friendship Our May 13
th meeting was held at the home of Jennifer Teahan. Jo Sheetz presented a video on the workings of
UMCOR and explained her role. Afterwards we put together 50 Health Kits in less than 30 minutes. Jo gave a
prayer over the Health Kits and she took them with her to be sent to UMCOR.
On June 10th we prepared Taco Dinner for the patients and
caregivers at Hope Lodge. On July 8th we made 250
sandwiches and packed 250 lunches for Action Ministries
in less than an hour.
Our August 12th meeting was held at the home of Cheryl
Atkins. This is our business planning meeting where we
signed up for Hostess, Devotionals and Programs for next
year. We also nominated officers for 2015. We then
decided that we would gather items for another 50 health
kits from our Circle as our part in the church wide program
at Wednesday Night Supper on September 10.
We have plans for another dinner at Hope Lodge on
September 22nd
.
Some of our members are so talented or at least electronically astute. Margaret Sanchez is our “Sign Up
Genius” so that we can sign up for all sorts of things via the computer, such as our items for the Health Kits and
who will bring food for Hope Lodge. Such efficiency!
But our most exciting news is that Katherine Carr has decided to join our Circle. We are so blessed.
Our Circle of Friendship meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in a member’s home. If you
would like to attend or would like more information about our circle, please contact Marie Glover at
678-333-4989 or [email protected].
