The Chamber of Mines Certificate in Rock Engineering – Paper 1 Preparation short course covers the syllabus of the Rock Mechanics Certificate Paper 1 with a general theoretical overview of basic rock mechanics as applicable to all types of mining environment, including surface and underground mining. This comprehensive course will prepare you for the competence examination with specific reference to themes on: stress and strain, constitutive behaviour, rock properties, stress in rock and rock masses, and rock mass properties.

Course structure
Presented over five days, the course allows sufficient time for information transfer, resolving misunderstood concepts and practical sessions for a hands-on experience that will aid you to successfully prepare for the theory paper (REC Paper 1) towards obtaining the Certificate in Rock Mechanics from the Chamber of Mines of South Africa.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course, you will be able to• comprehend and understand the general rock
engineering principles and its application in solving real-world mining problems
• apply fundamental scientific knowledge, comprehension and understanding to predict the behaviour of rock materials in real-world mining environments
• perform creative procedural design and synthesis of mine layouts and support systems to control and influence rock behaviour and rock failure processes
• use engineering methods and understand the uses of computer packages for the computation, modelling, simulation and evaluation of mining layouts, and
• communicate, explain and discuss the reasoning, methodology, results and ramifications of all these aspects in a professional manner at all levels.

On a broader base, this short course aims to develop your abilities on the six cognitive levels: (1) knowledge; (2) comprehension; (3) application; (4) analysis; (5) synthesis and (6) evaluation. During examination, you should therefore be able to demonstrate your capacity in the outcomes listed above.
Who should enrol?
This course is ideal for you if you have registered with the Chamber of Mines to complete the examination for the Certificate in Rock Mechanics – Paper 1 Theory, but is open to any person employed in the mining industry with the required certification to satisfy the admission requirements.

Admission requirements
Prospective delegates should have successfully obtained a Strata Control Certificate prior to enrolment on this course.
