Shuckin’ Shack owners Sean Cook and Matt Piccinin opened their flagship oyster bar on Carolina Beach in the fall of 2007, offering steamed seafood with a full bar, and a casual, family friendly atmosphere to the locals and visitors of the beach. Becoming a favorite seafood restaurant and a good Shuckin’ time, Cook and Piccinin decided to recreate the concept in downtown Wilmington in 2012. One year later, with two successful locations in eastern North Carolina, the two have teamed up with veteran restaurant franchise developer, Greg George, to expand the Shuckin’ Shack concept.
The Shuckin’ shack team has turned the concept into a turn key franchise opportunity complete with site selection, design and layout, construction, marketing, and training to ensure
success. One month into Franchise development, the team has 5 new location agreements planned for the coming year - three in Charlotte and two locations in the Carolina Beach neighboring areas of Surf City / Topsail Island and Mayfaire / Porter’s Neck.
“The Shuckin’ Shack is a unique franchise opportunity because of the niche oyster bar concept as well as a great name.”, said George.
Investors and six year patrons of the Shuckin’ Shack, Eric Weller, Gary Weller, Wade Newman, and Phil Newman have plans in place to open at least one of the Charlotte area locations by the end of 2014.
Investor Gary Weller said, “I kept telling myself for years I would never get into the restaurant business, but if I did, it would definitely be a Shuckin’ Shack!”
Owners Sean Cook and Matt Piccinin are very excited for their first expansion to be in the biggest city in North Carolina.
“Expanding to Charlotte is a natural for us and will greatly enhance the Shuckin’ Shack brand by having multiple locations in the area. We’re excited about working with our new partners and looking forward to helping them get their first location by years end.”
Retired military Jason Simas and his wife Bev are excited to own a Shuckin’ Shack oyster bar and will be moving from Newport News, VA to Topsail Island early 2015; Chris Cashwell, also retired military is moving to Carolina Beach from Albuquerque, NM this month to select his location.
Owners Cook and Piccinin are excited about the quick expansion and look forward to each location’s future success.

Welcome to Fo(u)r Dogs Pet Salon and Treatery, where pets and their parents are treated as family, and every pet gets
pampered according to their specific needs! I’m so excited to be a part of the Carolina Beach community and I look
forward to getting to know other residents and business owners in the area. My name is Elise Agnor and I’m the owner of Fo(u)r Dogs. I’ve always had a passion for animals, and began my
career as a groomer back in Texas in 2009. My family and I lived in Texas for several years while my husband served in the
US Army, but we are North Carolina natives, and so happy to finally be back home. It’s been a dream since I began
grooming to have my own salon and I don’t think I could have found a more perfect place to open one! My goal as a business owner is for every client (both the pet parents and the pets) to leave my salon happy with the
services they’ve received. I offer competitive prices and hold grooming specials that change each month. Beyond good
prices though, I offer fantastic customer service as well as a comfortable and safe place to leave your pets. Each pet is cared
for as if they were my own, with loving care, gentle kindness, and the understanding of the importance that each pet feels
safe and secure in the salon environment. My secondary goal is to educate pet parents of the importance of grooming for
the health and wellness of their pet. I am happy to explain any of the grooming process as well as answer any questions
regarding the at home grooming pet parents can do to help their pets between salon visits! I invite every pet owner to stop by and say hello, check out my pet supplies and treats, and call for any questions or
to set up appointments! Looking forward to a fantastic experience being a Carolina Beach business owner!

A new art installation, “Federal Point,” at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher spotlights the artistic photography of the Cape Fear Camera Club. Club members documented images throughout Federal Point in partnership with the Federal Point Historic Preservation Society and its Digital Image Project. Federal Point is the large peninsula between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean, south of Wilmington, North Carolina. During the project, a wide range of photos were taken from landscapes to businesses,
architecture to flora and fauna. The images featured in the exhibit depict a more artistic rather than documentary exploration of Federal Point. “Federal Point” will remain on display until Sept. 10, 2014. The Spadefish Gallery at the Aquarium showcases North Carolina artists throughout the year. Artwork that coincides with the Aquarium’s mission of inspiring appreciation and conservation of North Carolina’s aquatic environment is located on the second floor of the Marine Building.

Mayor’s Update - New CB Playground to be Dedicated
Last week the Carolina Beach Parks & Recreation (CBPR) staff and Advisory Committee
members, along with residents, joined with KaBOOM! and Playgrounds of the Carolinas to
build a new playground at Mike Chappell Park. Many adults and children volunteered to
participate in the project, which was the culmination of many months of dedicated
planning and preparation by the community and project partners.
The Mike Chappell Park Playground Project kicked off after CBPR was awarded a $15,000
“Let’s Play” Community Construction Grant. The grant is part of a community partnership led by the Dr.
Pepper Snapple Group and is intended to get kids and families more active nationwide. Upon award of
grant, CBPR staff went to work designing the new playground with input from the community and several
playground vendors. New playground features include a rock climbing wall, tree toppers and a dynamic
pad link, in addition to traditional features such as monkey bars and 4 slides.
The project began with volunteers arriving at 7:30 a.m. and continuing to work for the next 9 hours.
Everyone worked in teams to assemble slides, pour cement, spread mulch and build the playground stairs,
rock climbing wall and other play amenities.
Despite walking away dirty and exhausted, the Parks & Recreation staff, Committee and many amazing
volunteers did a great job making the
KaBOOM! Playground project successful. Their
work will ensure smiling faces and happy play
times for many years to come. Thank you to
everyone that participated!
An official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the
playground will be held at Mike Chappell Park
on Friday, July 11th at 12:00 PM. Refreshments
will include hot dogs, chips, and beverages.
Please join us.

A Message from your Chair
Chamber Members:
What an awesome start to the season here on Pleasure Island! Visitors from all over the
U.S. are discovering that Pleasure Island is the place to be for an exciting vacation with a
variety of fun things for the entire family! We saw a record attendance last month for
the 29th Annual Carolina Beach Music Festival and are seeing record numbers for
our weekly events as well. This is a clear indication that the word is out and people are
coming to experience it for themselves.
Creating a successful destination hot spot for visitors is not something that comes easy
or cheap. It takes businesses, organizations and volunteers to carry out the vision of
what we all want Pleasure Island to be. It requires a joint effort from everyone working
together for the common goal and I must say that it’s working. Just in the past few
months we have seen several new businesses come to Pleasure Island, join the Chamber of Commerce and then ask
how they too can be involved! Organizations are constantly looking for ways to enhance our activities and quality of
life here on Pleasure Island and our volunteers are second to none! It’s a great thing to see so many passionate
people willing to roll up their sleeves and do whatever is needed of them.
We at the Chamber are beyond thankful to be a part of this great endeavor and are always here to assist you in any
way. Our mission is to promote business and tourism on the island. And as always, if we can be of assistance to you
in any way, do not hesitate to contact us!
A special thanks goes out to Patricia, Rich and Sharon and the fine staff of Good Hops Brewing for hosting our
June social. These guys have done a great job in executing their vision for our island’s very first craft brewery and I
must say that it’s impressive! Be sure to stop in and pay these guys a visit and welcome them to Carolina Beach. For
more information and hours of operation visit their website www.goodhopsbrewing.com.
Be sure to keep up to date on all of the weekly events on Pleasure Island by visiting our website
