W hy is the agricul-ture industry important to Wilkes County?

The overall concept of “food security” is fundamentally important, and for that rea-son, agriculture is important. Feeding people has been the first priority throughout his-tory. Because of this priority, agriculture is considered to be the very basis of political

and social stability of a nation. Wilkes County falls within the top five agricultural produc-ing rankings in the state of North Carolina.

Moreover, the agricultural sector plays an important role in providing employment to people. Large and moderately large farms employ workers to undertake the various jobs relating to cultivation of crops and care of farm animals. The economy in Wilkes County has a dominant agricultural sec-

tor as reported in the Garner Economics study completed for Wilkes Economic Develop-ment Corp. in 2010.

The study reports total agri-cultural cash receipts in 2008 equaled $329 million. Wilkes County farm employment totaled 1,376 in 2007, a 4.1 per-cent of total employment. In 2007, farm proprietors income consisting of income received by sole proprietorships and

The Wilkes Chamber of Commerce welcomes Wendy Scott as the new Director of Communica-tions and Marketing.

Wendy, a native of Wilkes County, graduated with high honors from Catawba Valley Community Col-lege with an Associates in Applied Science Degree. After graduation she became an entrepreneur with the opening of her own photography studio, Cher-ished Memories. Wendy

built relationships with people throughout the com-munity photographing spe-cial moments for customers that will last them a lifetime.

Wendy comes to the Cham-ber from previous employ-ment with U.S. Cellular, a position giving her a chance to truly learn the benefits of being a chamber member and making connections.

Wendy is married to her high school sweetheart, Eric, and they have one child, Easton. WENDY SCOTT

Chamber has growthWilkes Chamber of

Commerce experienced tremendous growth in membership in June due to the commitment of multiple volunteers. I person-ally want to tha nk each one that gave their time and energy t o m a ke the mem-b e r s h i p r e c r u i t -ment event a success. Your efforts helped our chamber to have a greater business presence in North Carolina. That makes a difference when our chamber is voicing sup-port or opposition of a leg-islative bill that affects our business and overall com-munity. That larger pres-ence in membership shows community involvement of Wilkes County’s business and industry, speaking vol-umes about our community to State or Federal lead-ership. Volunteers came together and recruited 130+ new chamber members. You did make a difference and we thank you.

As we approach a new

school year, I want to make everyone aware of the pro-grams the Chamber and Wilkes Chamber Founda-tion support financially for education. Wilkes Cham-ber Foundation contributes $4,000 to the New Century Scholarship Program, a partnership with Com-munities in Schools and Wilkes Community Col-lege, guaranteeing schol-arship dollars to students in the sixth grade that if they continue through high school and graduate, they will have two years of tuition paid at WCC. Your chamber supports Wilkes County School’s Youth Leadership Program known as United Teens in Action. The Chamber funds the facilitation completed by Eric Rowles of Leading to Change, a leadership build-ing organization. The stu-dents share ideas, gain an overall knowledge of their community, develop team building skills, and learn to give back through partici-pation in a community ser-vice project. Your chamber provides technology gifts given to the recipients of the Teacher and Principal of the Year Award. Your cham-ber makes these contribu-

tions possible through the solicitation of sponsorship dollars and profits made during fundraising events.

When you write your check to the Chamber, you are endorsing the economic growth of Wilkes County. Your chamber is promot-ing and marketing Wilkes through distribution of printed materials to the N.C. Welcome Centers and Visi-tor Centers located across the state. The chamber web-sites are kept current with business listings, relocation demographics and visitor information. Your chamber is the first stop for people moving into the region to gain directions, maps, healthcare and school infor-mation, and a telephone book. Travelers come in the chamber to find places to stay, restaurants for food, local attractions to experi-ence, and a list of things to do during their visit. Each time that materials are forwarded, websites are visited, calls are received and people walk in the door, your chamber member busi-ness is being marketed. Be a member of your local chamber and be support-ive of your community’s future growth and success.

partnerships operating farms, totaled $106.7 million, 8.5 percent of total county earnings. To compare 2007 statistics to 2012, we find the following numbers: broil-ers produced in 2007 were 87 million, and in 2012 this dropped to 73 million. Cattle production dropped from 32,000 in 2007 to 31,500 in 2012.

Hay production increased to 63,200 tons in 2012 from 50,300 tons in 2007. In look-ing at these stats, we note the decline in production in some areas and increase in others. Changes are reflected primarily to the struggling economy in Wilkes, and in our nation over the last five years.

Agriculture development depends first on policy, and second on science, neither with any limit to developments in science and technology, nor to the role that they can play in the field of agricultural growth. So important is the role of agriculture that new concepts keep ‘cropping up’ to give the traditional activity a modern turn.

We’ve learned of new concepts from Dr. Leonard W. Fussell, Primus Genitics as he works with his cattle to enhance beef quality and poundage; and also with

Dwight Smith, Wesley Storehouse, LLC and their plans to implement a fodder system that will provide cattle with better health and in turn producing better meat, and a profit for the farmer.

Another new concept the world is rav-ing about these days is the importance of “organic farming.” There is evidence that organic farms are more sustainable and environmentally sound, giving agricul-ture a new dimension. The importance of agricultural practices was further established when “organic food” began as a small movement decades ago, with gardeners and farmers rejecting the use of conventional nonorganic practices.

Locally we have Tumbling Shoals Organic Farm, located on Sand Ridge Road in the Millers Creek community, owned and operated by Shiloh Avery and Jason Roehrig. Shiloh and Jason grow cer-tified organic vegetables and fruit. Each year, Tumbling Shoals offers a “share in the harvest,” which is a box of the absolute freshest, quality, certified organic fruits and vegetables delivered.

Another local initiative working to support and develop local food and farm entrepreneurship is Blue Ridge Seeds of Change. BRSC is engaged in the building of a regional food system in the Appala-

chian regions of North Carolina, Tennes-see and Virginia. The organization’s vision of developing a “regional food system” is to transform community health, community food security, and community economic development.

Community health will improve nutri-tion, decrease specific chronic diseases, and enhance health education. Commu-nity food security by having access to local, healthy, affordable food, use of sustainable, ecologically sound farming practices, farm land accessibility/con-servation, community gardens, and com-munity self-reliance.

Community economic development is accomplished through the support and developing of local food and farm entre-preneurship, growing living wages, creat-ing livable future, and improving farmer sustainability.

Wilkes County also boasts a unique vari-ety of grapes and wine. The wine indus-try ranks as the top-five destination for wine travelers and enthusiasts. In Wilkes visitors have an opportunity to enjoy the wines of Elkin Creek Vineyards/Win-ery, Jones vonDrehle Vineyards/Winery, McRitchie Vinyeards/Winery; Menarick Vineyards/Winery; and Raffaldini Vine-yards/Winery. Roaring River Vineyards is

soon to open in the Traphill area of Wilkes. North Carolina has a storied history of

wine and grapes, from being the home of our nation’s first cultivated wine grape to being the leading wine producer before Prohibition. Overall, the North Carolina wine and grape industry generates an annual economic impact of $1.28 billion and supports nearly 7,600 jobs.

The production of apples and other fruits also has a significant impact on the agriculture industry. Wilkes County is home to over a dozen orchards, most located in the Moravian Falls Community. Perry Lowe Orchard is a sixth generation apple orchard, proven sustainability.

Forestry is another business that falls into the agriculture industry. The forest products industry is North Carolina’s num-ber one manufacturing industry in terms of employment and wages, according to the College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University.

Wilkes, a county of 483,420 acres and nearly 110,000 of that acreage is affiliated with the agriculture industry. The industry employs over 1,400 people and produced in cash receipts a total of $276,222,004 in 2011, proving the importance of the industry in Wilkes.

The success of this event enables your Chamber to have an even greater impact on our community statewide and nation-ally. The larger number of members in your Chamber provides our community with even better representation and a louder “voice for business support” in Raleigh and Washington D.C.

Your chamber of commerce believes in speaking up for what is best for the Wilkes County community and as cham-ber members, we are represented in one voice. Wilkes Chamber has involved rela-tionships with N.C. Chamber and the U.S. Chamber, both very strong lobbyists for business in our state and the country.

Volunteers make a difference and have the ability to change a community. We thank everyone involved for believing in your Chamber of Commerce.
