What began as a small family company has grown to be a large effort serving the state of Iowa. Kings Material, owner of Marquart Concrete Products (604 1/2 South 3rd Avenue) has 13 locations across the state and employs roughly 370 with a majority of them in the Ready Mix business and the rest in the concrete block/brick and landscape material business. Kings Materials has been in business for 125 years. Marquart Concrete Products, formerly known as Marshall Concrete, has been serving Mar-shalltown since 1999. Marquart Concrete Products employee four individuals who work hard to provide concrete block to most new schools being built across the state and many other commercial jobs. They handle concrete products for new construction, building additions, and remodeling. They also sell concrete block, brick, Marshalltown trowels, natural stone, cultured stone and a wide variety of landscape and retaining wall products to the general public.

“A lot of people don’t realize we sell to the general public and have employees that have been with the company for years,” said Richard Sankot, Sales Representative. “If

we can’t answer your question we can call an employee who can!” Kings Material and Marquart Concrete Products have a long history of being a “good neighbor”when it comes to education. Kings supports Kirk-wood Community College, while Marquart supports Marshalltown Com-munity College. The Masonry Construction curriculum, an effort to train bricklayers, has benefited greatly from the company’s many contributions. The company also donated a building on South 12th Avenue to house the Iowa State Trowel Trades. They also support Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts with donations or reduced prices for their projects. When asked what the best part about conducting business in Mar-shalltown is, Sankot responded, “We can service Marshalltown and the surrounding areas without customers having to drive to Des Moines or elsewhere. We get to know a lot of our customers and can greet them by name.” “We support the Chamber because the Chamber wants Marshalltown businesses to succeed and promotes Marshalltown in a positive light and we do too!” stated Sankot. “Stop down and browse our outdoor display and see our pond in the spring. If you’re riding on the bike path , take a quick break and walk around our displays.”

merge the sounds of Bob Dylan and Arlo Guthrie with their own home-spun panache to create never-before-heard music. Barely adults, Elijah, John and James are artists in every sense of the word and already have the credentials of veterans. Having performed at the Grand Ole Opry, toured Europe in 2006, performed at Jacob’s Ladder Musical Festival in Israel and received the Daniel Pearl Memorial violin in 2006, their bluegrass, gospel vibes are sending waves of recognition to the legend Arlo Guthrie himself. “I know I will be hearing from The Abrams Brothers for a long time to come,” he said. Violin, guitar, intricate finger-work and vocals are just some of the factors that come together to make The Abrams Brothers mod-ern-day virtuosos.

CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAUIowa Travel Guide cover photo

selected Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reyn-olds today unveiled the winning cover photo for the 2013 Iowa Travel Guide. The next edition will feature a photo of a kayaker on the Turkey River on its cover. Face-book fans of the Iowa Tourism Office voted for their favorite of three cover options during a 10-day period ending Febru-ary 1. In December, the Iowa Tourism Office asked amateur and professional photographers to submit photos from their Iowa travels for consideration on the cover. More than 600 submissions were narrowed down to three cover options. The winning image was shot by Jessica Rilling of Cedar Rapids. The four-color guide is Iowa’s comprehensive trip-planning publica-tion, with listings from more than 700 attractions, 550 hotels, 160 bed and breakfasts and 400 campgrounds in addition to information on state parks, trails and scenic byways. The Iowa Tourism Office distributes more than 100,000 copies of the Iowa Travel Guide annually to travelers from every state and around the world. The new guide will be available in the spring of 2013. A digital version will also be available at traveliowa.com. “Tourism is an important industry in Iowa – it affects all 99 counties and generates $328 million in state taxes annually,” said Gov. Branstad. “One of the best ways we have to showcase all that Iowa has to offer is the Iowa Travel Guide.” The other finalists were boaters having fun on an Okoboji lake entered by Brock Bringle of Storm Lake and a family hiking at Maquoketa Caves State Park submitted by Kelsey Delperdang of Cedar Rapids. “People value vacations and their time away from the daily grind,” said Lt. Gov. Reynolds. “The three destinations captured among the finalist cover options are representative of the thousands of great Iowa places you can choose for your next getaway.” People can get more information on Iowa travel destinations via www.traveliowa.com, the Iowa Tourism Office’s Facebook page, Twitter ac-count, blog or Pinterest account. Travelers can share their Iowa vacation photos in the Travel Iowa Flickr pool. Tourism in Iowa generates more than $7 billion in expenditures and employs 63,400 people statewide. The Iowa Tourism Office is part of the Iowa Economic Development Authority.

Bach In A Day The second annual Bach In A Day workshop, an event for singers and instrumentalists, will be held on Saturday, March 2, at Hope United Meth-odist Church, 2203 S. 3rd Avenue, in Marshalltown. This will be a unique day of making music in which participants learn and perform a complete Bach cantata (Cantata 148) as it might have been done 300 years ago. The Bach Society of Minnesota’s Artistic Director, Paul Boehnke, will be conducting, and J. David Moore, also from the Twin Cities, will be pre-paring the choir. Mr. Boehnke was the conductor for last year’s workshop in Marshalltown and is returning for a second year. J. David Moore is a composer and arranger as well as an active educator and clinician. Mr. Moore will rehearse the choral group while Mr. Boehn-ke is conducting the instrumental rehearsal. Bach In A Day organizers are looking for both amateur and professional singers who read music well, and instrumentalists who play strings, oboe, or other instruments that can easily transpose a C part. Rehearsals begin at 1:00 p.m., and culminate in an evening concert at 7:00 p.m. which is free and open to the public. This day of do-it-yourself music is co-sponsored by the Marshall Coun-ty Arts & Culture Alliance and the Bach Society of Minnesota, with partial funding from the Martha-Ellen Tye Foundation. Information and registra-tion forms are available at 641-754-5616 or TheAlliance@marshallnet.

The cost of this trip is just $2399 per person (double occupancy) which includes roundtrip airfare to/from Seattle/Beijing, airfare and ground transportation within China, 4- and 5-star accomodations, all meals, travel insurance and transfer to/from the Beijing airport. The trip will be coordi-nated by Citslinc, a reputable company that works only with Chambers of Commerce on travel trips to China. “We are very excited to announce that as a special part of this interna-tional trip, travelers will have an opportunity to visit the Emerson Wuqing facility,” said Chamber Vice President Lynn Olberding. “This will give travelers a unique opportunity to see a local company’s impact overseas.” Those not interested in the Emerson tour will have an opportunity to see additional tourist sites in Beijing. “Over 70 people attended our informational meeting at the end of Janu-ary,” said Olberding. “There is a lot of interest and we currently have 34 people signed up to travel with the Chamber in October.” Individuals interested in more information about the trip should contact Olberding at the Chamber office at 641-753-6645. Travelers must be reg-istered for the trip and have paid a $250 non-refundable deposit on/before Monday, April 15 in order to travel on the trip. Final payments are due to the Chamber on/before July 15. The group will be working with AAA Travel on airfare to Seattle from Des Moines (and the return). Travelers must have a valid passport with an expiration date later than May 1, 2014.

Chamber TRC off to a strong start In 2012, the Chamber started a new program called a Total Resource Campaign, utilizing Cham-ber volunteers who met with businesses about sponsorships of Chamber events, as well as recruit-ment of new members into the Chamber. The program was so successful, the Chamber recently launched the 2nd Annual Total Resource Campaign. The theme “Unmask the Possi-bilities” highlights the potential for Chamber members to get involved with and support the myriad of Chamber events, programs and initiatives avail-able throughout the year. “We set another ambitious goal this year,” said Chris Brodin, Chamber Board Member and Vice Chair of Membership Services. “We hope to recruit at least 20 new members and raise $145,000 through sponsorships of Chamber events.” The campaign funds support the Chamber programs throughout the year, including the Educator Appreciation Breakfast, Chamber Ambas-sadors Golf Outing, Chamburrrrr Scurry 5K & Wellness Fair, Scholastic Banquet, among other programs and events. The campaign is co-chaired by HyVee Store Manager Ric Anderson and Marshalltown Broadcasting General Manager Clark Wideman. Both Anderson and Wideman are former Chamber Board members, as well as Past Board Chairs. The campaign officially kicked off on Tuesday, February 12 and will wrap up on or before Friday, March 29. Businesses who sponsored events in FY 2012/2013 have first right of refusal for the same sponsorships for the upcoming year. These first right of refusals must be signed and re-turned to the Chamber office by February 24. Businesses wanting to be contacted about sponsorships throughout the campaign should notify the Chamber office.

Marshalltown, Marshall County and the state of Iowa.

Caleris Chooses Marshalltown for expansion Caleris is a leading US-Based Business Process Outsourcing provider, specializing in Inbound Call Center Services, Outsourced Tech Support & Help Desk, Social Media Monitoring, and various Back Office Processing services. Headquartered in West Des Moines, Iowa, Caleris currently oper-ates three Outsourced US Tech Centers in the Iowa communities of Man-ning, Jefferson, and Newton. The new expansion to Marshalltown will be their fourth Iowa location. The company began as an Outsourced Tech-nical Support Service provider for computer peripherals in 1993 and has grown to support a wide variety of applications, from Customer Service to User Generated Content Moderation. The company is proud to use the motto, “Outsource to Iowa, Not India”. The company will be looking to initially hire up to 100 people. MEDIC Staff had the pleasure of beginning work with Caleris back in early 2012. The company initially evaluated six other communities throughout Iowa. Through the power of strategic partnerships, Caleris eventually made the decision to select Marshalltown as their newest loca-tion. Those partnerships included local commercial real estate developers, city staff and elected officials, as well as local and statewide economic development practitioners and most importantly the owners of Claris. The company will be hiring up to 100 people over the course of the next three months. These jobs pay an average of $14.50 per hour with a bonus package, health care and retirement program. They are looking for indi-viduals with a minimum high school diploma. The company is planning several job fairs over the coming month as well as an ongoing interview and hiring process. If you know of someone who could benefit from these new employment opportunities, they can find additional information at www.caleris.com.

Partnerships for Growth In early 2011, MEDIC elected to become an economic development partner with the Greater Des Moines Partnership. Through this strategic partnership we work to grow Marshall County along with the metro area. The benefits of this include shared marketing expenses for direct targeted marketing, tradeshow marketing, and small business assistance. Over the coming months two initiatives will be rolled out by the partnership that MEDIC and Marshall County stakeholders will provide input to engage and boost our ongoing returns from the strategic partnership with Greater Des Moines. The Capital Corridor Project is a nine county initiative to create vision for a stronger region. The project’s main components will work to identify assets to rebrand the region with a focus on the biosciences and advanced manufacturing as well as address the needs of our existing employers and the skills gap currently impacting our existing business and industry. At the end of the months-long effort, Greater Des Moines and Central Iowa will have a consensus-based, achievable roadmap to guide the area’s path to short and long-term economic growth. The Greater Des Moines region is currently participating in the Metro-politan Export Initiative (MEI) developed by the Brookings Institution. The

MEI is a ground-up collaborative effort to help a group of regional civic, business, and political leaders, along with their states, create and imple-ment customized Metropolitan Export Plans (MEP). These localized ex-port plans apply market intelligence to develop better targeted, integrated export-related services and strategies to help regions better connect their firms to global customers, as outlined by their individualized export goals. If you would like to learn more about either of these initiatives or provide feedback as the plans come together, do not hesitate to contact the MEDIC office.
