Jack Kelly’s life went from hockey to heroin to hero – all in six short years! Jack grew up in Charlestown and sustained an injury playing high school hockey. After surgery, he became addicted to pain medication which led to heroin, homelessness and a criminal record. At the age of 22, after treatment and support services, Jack became a prominent voice in the recovery movement. He was the featured speaker at Massachusetts Organization for Addiction Recovery’s (MOAR) monthly meeting with his book – Sharp Needles – in tow. It’s a vivid story of pain, resolve and hope. Today, Jack works as anadvocate in recovery to respond to the opioid crisis.

Like Jack, CHA works on a daily basis to secure limited resources for addiction treatment and raises awareness of the disease. Recently, CHA’s Ellie Grossman, MD was interviewed on the Somerville Overcoming Addiction show where she demonstrated her caring approach with no judgment or stigma just like any other disease. Ellie worked to integrate mental health and substance use treatment in all primary care locations. Another way that CHA is improving access is through the Everett Peer Recovery Coach program. In one year, CHA referred 789 patients of whom 63% followed through with treatment. This successful program has been expanded to Cambridge and is just one of the many CHA programs that the Foundation helps support to directly challenge social inequities.

By addressing the social influences of health, CHA is bringing care to the people when and where they need it. We are responding to the rise in HIV and Hepatitis C cases at our Zinberg Clinic and working to expand reproductive health services in the community. We are growing our oral health services at Somerville and Everett schools and supporting reunified immigrants with trauma and mental health needs. Malou Jean-Baptiste, MD is addressing obesity with her Haitian mobile kitchen and Doctors Roll, Simons, Mulugeta and staff distribute free food at the Revere Care Center’s fresh produce market, serving 2,472 patients and community members in its first year.

CHA has purpose. Our deep community ties and commitment to social justice are challenging social inequities. Healthcare is a basic human right and CHA is working to make it inclusive and accessible. CHA advocates for change, bringing care to the people – and yes, we are very proud of it – that’s our mission.
