Challenge Handbook Baton Rouge South Campus
2017-2018
2
Director’s Welcome We are so excited about the upcoming school year. We are grateful for the privilege to lead your students in the conversations to come. With this great joy comes the need for organization and cooperation for our year to go as smoothly as possible. This handbook is the collaboration of all the campus directors to help make that happen. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the director of your student’s program. We all have families and other responsibilities but will do our best to respond quickly. If you have a general question about the campus, you can contact any of the directors listed below. It is an honor to be a part of this stage of the education and growth of these young people! We are working alongside you to develop in students the passion and gifts “To Know God and Make Him Known.”
By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding is it established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.

Campus Rules

Your children are dear and important to us! In order for us to keep them safe while on the CC South Campus,
they must obey the rules below. These rules are to minimize the distractions on campus during Seminars and
Assembly, decrease possible hazards, and encourage our community to flourish.
Students must stay inside the building within their designated areas during Seminar and Assembly. (See
your tutor for more details.) Students must stay in the back outdoor area when outside during lunch. NO students are allowed in the
front of the building at ANY time unless escorted by his/her parent. Exception: self-driving students ONLY
when arriving or leaving the campus. Students must address all adults in a respectful manner while on the campus. All CC participants (including parents) are requested to use the side or back doors ONLY. Students may not wander the church during Seminar and Assembly. Students caught loitering will be
corrected accordingly. Proper behavior must be maintained at all times on campus, including during lunch. Inappropriate or
dangerous behavior, such as swearing, disrespecting adults, jumping fences, climbing the swing set, etc,
will be corrected swiftly and accordingly.
Enforcement
ANY parent who catches any student breaking one of the rules on campus is encouraged to correct the
student on the spot. Should the correction be disregarded or multiple offenses continue to occur, certain privileges will be
removed from the student as deemed appropriate. Continued misbehavior will be addressed by one or more of the following actions as deemed appropriate
by the campus leadership: A conference with the student’s tutor A phone call to the parent A parent-tutor conference A one week suspension from campus activities A permanent suspension from campus activities
Any questions about this policy or enforcement should be directed to the campus leadership. Please keep the communications guidelines and the conflict resolution guidelines in mind during this
process (see page 11 for details).
Expectations
9
1. Attendance Policy: All students are expected to attend every community day unless prior arrangements are made
with the tutor. Nearly every seminar builds on the previous week. Missing a class is detrimental for both the student
and the class itself.
2. Sick Policy: If your student has run a fever over 100.1 in the last 24 hours or shows signs of any contagious illness,
we do ask that he/she stays home from campus that day. Please contact your Director/Tutor to let him/her know
your student will be absent. Fellow classmates and/or your Director/Tutor will help students makeup missed work in
the case of illness.
3. Unexpected Situations: If a family has an unexpected emergency or event, please contact your Director/Tutor to let
him/her know your student will be absent. We will be happy to make arrangements with another classmate or your
Director/Tutor to assist with missed material.
4. Setup/Tear down Rotation: Students will be assigned either setup or tear down duties once a month to assist the
Director. It is not good to have one or two students always doing this work! We will be mindful of siblings and be
sure to coordinate dates to avoid multiple weeks of coming early or staying late.
5. Being on time: The Challenge Program is rigorous. Your Tutors spend hours in preparation. It is all we can do to fit
the material we have into the 50-60 minutes allotted for each seminar. Therefore, we will start and end each day
with or without a full class. Anything a student misses will be his/her responsibility to makeup by consulting with a
classmate and not the Tutor. However, we DO understand emergencies and unusual situations arise.
6. Treatment of classmates: Please refer to the Challenge Guide, “Classroom Conduct Codes.” Our expectation is that
students will treat one another with respect both inside and outside the classroom. In the unlikely event that we do
have situations arise, we will follow the three-step Matthew 18 procedure as detailed on a separate page of this
Handbook.
7. Tutor/Teacher Emphasis: Classical Conversations consistently emphasizes that the role of the PARENT is Teacher
and the role of the Tutor is Lead Learner. This can become clouded during the Challenge years as students take more
and more responsibility for their own education. The Parent/Teacher always has the flexibility to tailor the program
as needed. We simply ask for clear communication with the Tutor when this takes place. On the other hand, the
Tutor will not grade students in terms of quality of work. Tutors will provide feedback, communication and
accountability with students for weekly completion of work.
8. Completion of Weekly Assignments: As with attendance, the completion of weekly assignments is integral to both
individual and corporate success. We have periodic breaks to allow for students to catch up on work if they fall
behind. However, the key to success in Challenge is a steady weekly schedule at home. The workload is manageable
in all levels of Challenge as long as students devote the hours needed for his/her learning style each day!
9. Use of Break Times/Getting up in Class: Students are expected to use time before class, during lunch and the
allotted break times for drinks, restroom breaks, etc. Getting up during class, unless absolutely necessary, causes
distractions for the entire class.
10
10. Etiquette Agreement: All students are expected to bring the completed Etiquette Agreement from their guides to
the first day of class.
We recognize that there is a wide range of parental opinion in the following
two areas, therefore, we have decided to put some clear policies into place.
Challenge students are role models to our Foundations/Essentials students and families.
Electronics/Device Policy
Cell phones must be put away and the volume turned off at all times during Seminars and Assembly. If a
student needs to check his/her phone during a break time or lunch, please do this IN YOUR CLASSROOM. If
a student needs to use a cell phone for research purposes during a class (Upper Challenges), to take
photos (Class Photographers) or to contact a parent, permission must be granted or arrangements must be
made with his/her Tutor.
Parents, if you need to contact your student during class hours, please text/call the Tutor instead or make
arrangements to do so during break times or lunch.
Tablets and Laptops must also be put away and the volume turned off during Seminars and Assembly. All
rules apply as above. With exceptions in the Upper Challenges for strands such as Debate, that require a
great deal of research material. At each Tutor’s discretion, electronics may be used. HOWEVER, at the first
sign of abuse or misuse, privileges will be removed.
Dress Code Begin by referring to the Dress Code in your Challenge Guide. “While we recognize that participating
families may hold differing standards on clothing in their own homes, Classical Conversations expects that
student dress will be neat, honorable and appropriate for the occasion, and conducive to full participation
in all activities while in community.”
All bottoms must fit appropriately (not to baggy or to tight and must remain at the waist). Boys and girls
are allowed to wear shorts of any kind as long as they are no higher than 2 inches above the knee cap.
Keep in mind they must not be frayed, ripped, or ragged.
Girls wearing skirts or dresses, please keep in mind, they must also be no higher than the knee cap. It is
not mandatory, but highly advised, that girls wear short leggings or something similar under skirts/dresses
11
to protect modesty.
No tube tops, tank tops, or off the shoulder shirts allowed. Any sheer or laced tops must not expose
undergarments or skin must be accompanied by some type of camisole. Any tops that are revealing at the
top or of the midriff are not permitted.
No inappropriate picture, logos, names, or innuendos on any clothing.

Statement of Faith & Religious Purpose
(1) The owners of CC Challenge – South Campus are followers of Jesus Christ (2) The owners believe that Jesus Christ requires that all His followers strive to live their lives in a manner that is consistent with the precepts and doctrines of their faith which are grounded solely in the Bible. (3) The owners therefore seek to operate CC Challenge – South Campus in accordance with the principles of their faith and strive to make all business decisions, including hiring decisions and decisions about business activity according to Biblical principles. (4) The owners of CC Challenge – South Campus believe that the Bible provides clear guidance on contemporary controversies relating to marriage, gender, sexuality, and the sanctity of human life, as follows:
Statement on Marriage, Gender, and Sexuality We believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God (Genesis 1:26-27). Rejection of one’s biological sex is a rejection of the image of God within that person. We believe that the term “marriage” has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture (Genesis 2:18-25). We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman who are married to each other (1 Corinthians 6:18; 7:2-5; Hebrews 13:4). We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman. We believe that any form of sexual immorality (including adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, incest, bestiality, and use of pornography) is sinful and offensive to God (Matthew 15:18-20; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10). We believe that in order to preserve the function and integrity of CC Challenge – South Campus as the local Body of Christ, and to provide a Biblical role model to the CC Challenge – South Campus members and community, it is imperative that all persons employed by CC Challenge – South Campus in any capacity, or who serve as volunteers, agree to and abide by this Statement on Marriage, Gender, and Sexuality (Matthew 5:16, Philippians 2:14-16, 1 Thessalonians 5:22). We believe that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ (Acts 3:19-21; Romans 10:9-10; 1Corinthians 6:9-11). We believe that every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity (Mark 12:28-31; Luke 6:31). Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with Scripture or the doctrines of CC Challenge – South Campus. This was produced by C12 Group – Segments August 2015 – Working on My Business Section – Appendix C.

We are blessed with both veteran families and those new to the program. Use this space to collect contact information. Veteran families, make it your mission to find at least ONE new CC Family and exchange yourcontact information! New families, use this space over the school year to write down phone numbers and email addresses for your Challenge class! Upper Challenge students will find it beneficial to exchange each other’s contact information as well. Study partners make the load lighter!
