It is hard to believe that we are already in April with AUSPACK 2019 now less than 12 months away. The start of the year has been very busy. Our first 2018 member dinner in Melbourne was a great success with over 80 people in attendance with the next members dinner scheduled for 10 July in Adelaide. Packaging and Processing Week events have been organised to coincide with the AIP National Conference. These include the PIDA Awards and Gala dinner on 2 May and APPMA’s sponsorship of the Women in Industry breakfast on 3 of May. Activities to set up the Australian Pavilion at Propak Asia are also keeping the team busy. In my last address I referred to the value of member and industry feedback and it’s importance in helping the Board plan and prioritise how to best support, add value and remain relevant. Late in 2017 initiatives were implemented to elicit and capture feedback from members regarding expectations of the APPMA, current business challenges and ideas on how the APPMA can better support members and the wider industry that we all serve. These initiatives culminated in the commissioning of the independent member and industry survey in November 2017. I am pleased to say the feedback has been fantastic with the key priorities revolving around the APPMA driving and facilitating increased member-to-member networking opportunities, increased member-to- industry interaction and an expansion of the member support services. Plans and actions are now well underway to increase activities in these areas and I look forward to updating you on our progress in the coming months. We also have engaged Associations Forum to conduct a review and update of the APPMA constitution to ensure it is structured to meet the needs of the APPMA now vs when it was first drafted 30 plus years ago. This will include issuing a discussion paper to the members which will include proposed changes to the constitution with all proposed changes to be voted on at the AGM in September. I encourage all members to read the discussion paper when it is issued and ask questions and provide feedback so that the final product is reflective of the membership. I look forward to seeing your all at one or more of our up-coming events.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Ihope everyone had a safe and happy Easter.

Arthritis Australia’s Accessible Packaging Researcher Alexandra Brayshaw, MAIP is interested in knowing what packaging you think consumers struggle to open most and why. Alexandra was awarded an APPMA Scholarship to study a Diploma in Packaging Technology. For her Diploma’s research project she has chosen to undertake a survey aiming to identify the food and drink packaging, which are causing consumers the most

difficulty when opening, removing or using a product. But now she wants to see if the packaging industry’s perception matches consumer reality. Share your perspective by completing her 5-9 minute survey at tinyurl.com/y7gklk8r. The survey will close Tuesday 17 April. Participants will receive a summary of the survey results in late May or you can hear some of the projects highlights at Alexandra’s presentation at the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP) National Conference May 2 Breakout Session 1C. PMMI THE EVOLUTION OF AUTOMATION INDUSTRY REPORT NOW AVAILABLE

CLICK HERE TO TAKE THE SURVEY

PACKAGING MACHINERY MARKET IS ROBUST AND GROWING

PMMI’s ‘2017 Evolution of Automation Report’, from the association’s Business Intelligence Program, predicts strong growth for sales of new, more sophisticated packaging machinery as brand owners and end users continue down a path toward automation. A more narrowly focused report, “1st Quarter 2018 Quarterly

Business Indicator,” confirms an uptick, specifically over the next two years.

Interestingly enough, another well-known industry observer, ARC Advisory Group, also sees the packaging machinery market as one set to grow nicely. ARC’s study, “The Packaging

Machinery and Automation Market Research Study,” delivers current market analysis plus a five-year market and technology forecast. This report analyses the market for packaging machinery and packaging automation. The market grew strongly in 2017 and healthy growth will continue throughout the forecast period. The food & beverage segment accounts for the largest share, and pharma and healthcare is expected to grow the fastest. The market for packaging machinery is less volatile than for other types of machinery because of its close association with mass consumption of food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, tissue, and all sorts of consumer goods. Growth in the packaging machinery industry tends to track growth in megatrends, such as general population growth, urbanisation, and rising incomes. This report presents market sizes for packaging machinery by country of production (‘origin’ sales), and by region of consumption (‘destination’ sales). The focus of this report is on a fixed set of industries that consume packaging machines, rather than the broad spectrum of industries typically covered in other reports. Some of these industries are further divided into sub-segments called ‘applications’ (e.g. food, beverage, and tobacco are three applications of food & beverage).

DINNER

AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES AND AUGMENTED REALITY WERE DISCUSSED AT THE MARCH MEMBER DINNER

ARNOTT’S FOUNDATION CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY GALA BALL IN TRUE GATSBY STYLE FOR CAMP QUALITY

80 Australian Packaging & Processing Machinery Association (APPMA) Members had the opportunity to hear Brett Wiskar, R&D and Innovation Director, Wiley speak at their March Member Dinner at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Melbourne. Brett discussed ‘The New Speed of Change’ and showcased how over the next 20 years technology will change not only the way we all do business but also how roles of individuals will be

adapted to suit the technology. Technology advancements like augmented reality, autonomous vehicles, shifting how companies manage their energy usage and even how people’s positions in 20 or 30 years will have different skillset requirements were just some of the topics discussed at the dinner. The pace of this technology-driven change is only going to accelerate, meaning the world has a challenging and exciting time ahead. Brett Wiskar provided valuable insight into technology trends that are shifting the way businesses are being run and a better understanding of the business and industry benefits from adopting these systems. Brett’s professional manner and exceptional presentation skills enabled APPMA Members to gain insight into the emerging trends of technological advancement for the industry and left them wondering if the next freight truck they see driving down the freeway will be autonomous.

The 10th Anniversary of the Arnott’s Foundation Gala Ball was held on the 23rd of February at the International Convention Centre in Sydney’s Darling Harbour. Over 900 guests were entertained by Catriona Rowntree as MC, and

performances from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Fasika, and Furnace and the Fundamentals. The night was a great success with the Arnott’s Foundation successfully raising over $500,000. These funds will go towards running Camp Quality Family Camps across Australia. Arnott’s commitment to Camp Quality over the past 10 years has supported hundreds of families impacted by cancer in Australia to have every opportunity to thrive. The APPMA are pleased to advise that they contributed to the evening by donating an Olympic Torch from the Athens Olympics that sold for $4000 and Stuart Shaw and Rob Marguccio attended the ball. The APPMA looks forward to helping again in 2019.

SCHOLARSHIP

WINNER

APPMA SCHOLARSHIP WINNER GRADUATES WITH DIPLOMA IN PACKAGING

TECHNOLOGY

APPMA Scholarship Winner Graduates with Diploma in Packaging Technology Past APPMA Scholarship Winner Anna Roland Dip.Pkg.Tech. MAIP, Product Technologist, Nestle Australia,

graduates from Diploma in Packaging Technology. The APPMA have been running the Scholarship program, in conjunction with the AIP, for ten years enabling one lucky packaging technologist, designer or engineer in Australia the opportunity to complete a Diploma in Packaging Technology to the value of $9,000 every year.

The Internationally Accredited Diploma in Packaging Technology prepares students to take responsibility for packaging operations at any level through the supply chain. The qualification is comprehensive and provides an opportunity to study the principles of packaging, packaging materials and packaging processes. Diploma in Packaging Technology students are from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines, and are typically experienced practitioners or managers in technical, sales/marketing, QA, purchasing, engineering or design. Completion of the Diploma in Packaging Technology demonstrates your commitment to your career and to the industry. Delegates who successfully complete the Diploma are equipping themselves for senior positions within the packaging industry.

Both the APPMA and the AIP are extremely proud of Anna’s achievements. Here is what Anna had to say about both the APPMA Scholarship and also achieving her Diploma in Packaging Technology...

Q1: What did winning the APPMA Scholarship mean to you? How important are scholarships like this?Working as a food technologist means that packaging is a part of daily life. This opportunity to be awarded the APPMA annual Scholarship to undertake the Diploma in Packaging Technology meant that I had a chance to build my skills in another area that I work closely with. The APPMA Scholarship made undertaking the Diploma possible for me, where I otherwise would not have been able to enrol.

Q2: What does graduating from the Diploma in Packaging Technology mean to you?Graduating with a Diploma in Packaging Technology has given me a broad background of knowledge in not just the types of packaging I work with, but all packaging substrates. Because the course is so thorough and requires you to do a hands-on project it really leaves you with a sense of accomplishment and that you can now work with packaging confidently.

Q3: How will you apply this knowledge moving forward?I really enjoyed the root cause analysis approach and the emphasis placed on looking at the whole packaging process when problem solving part of unit 3. As we are continually changing or designing new products I can see that having a good understanding of packaging can help me support others in my team and result in better delivered projects.

Q4: Do you have any advice on why other people should complete the Diploma in Packaging Technology?I found that packaging was hardly covered at all within my undergraduate degree and upon entering the workforce it was truly rare to find anyone at the factory that understood packaging at all. There was a high reliance on suppliers that meant when there was an issue the whole line stopped until advice was given on what to do next. Given that every food product is packaged in some way I think the Diploma has really helped me to think about the product as a whole and can see that this has made me a better packaging technologist.

Q5: So where to from here for your career?I plan to keep on making new products for now while I am lucky to work alongside some lovely packaging technologists who have been great at sharing knowledge with me and letting me help out with trials. Australia clearly can’t go without chocolate so I am having no trouble keeping busy for now.

Please join with the APPMA in once again congratulating Anna Roland Dip.Pkg.Tech. MAIP on her achievements and we look forward to seeing what is in store for her in the near future.

THE APPMA ARE PLEASED TO ADVISE THAT THEY HAVE AGREED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE FIGHT FOOD WASTE AND FRAUD CRC.

FIGHT

FOOD

WASTE

&FRAUD

CRC

AUSTRALIA’S NEED

Australia has a strong international comparative advantage in the food and wine sectors. Despite this advantage, we are still losing over $20 billion p.a. of value through food loss

and waste through inefficient food supply chains and as a result of consumer behaviour. Food waste is a global issue that most of the developed world has now recognised and are committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.3: By 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including postharvest losses. Australia will also be committing to this goal through the Federal Government National Food Waste Strategy. Likewise, food and wine fraud is a global economic issue that affects all Australians. As a result of Australia’s global reputation as a supplier of high quality and safe food and wine in the international marketplace, ‘Brand Australia’ is increasingly being hijacked by unscrupulous operators counterfeiting our products in overseas markets. Initial estimates put the cost of lost food and wine sales alone at several billion dollars each year. Through industry-led research, development and education the cost of food waste and product fraud can largely be prevented, and as a result the Australian food and wine industry can regain profit. Economically, the World Resources Institute recently reported that on average food waste reduction delivered a 14x Return on Investment (ROI) to the 700 companies involved in their study, 92x return for cities and a 250x return for countries. Furthermore, a Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) report identified that a single food fraud incident can cost 2-15% of the annual revenue of a company, which could financially cripple a food company, as well as causing serious damage to ‘Brand Australia’. Of course, food waste and fraud doesn’t just impact businesses, it affects every Australian. Recent New South Wales Government estimates put the cost

of food waste at $4,000 p.a. for the average household. Furthermore, food fraud costs United Kingdom households the equivalent of $750 p.a., with a similar impact likely in Australia. So fighting food waste and fraud puts money back into the pockets of everyday Australians, which is good for them and the economy.

As well as economic and social returns, environmental returns from the proposed Fight Food Waste & Fraud CRC will be significant, as wasted food is the world’s third largest Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emitter. Avoiding food waste will make a major contribution to Australia meeting its international GHG reduction obligations and importantly we can all play our part. FIGHT FOOD WASTE AND FRAUD CRC PURPOSEThe purpose of the Fight Food Waste and Fraud CRC is to protect and profit Australia’s Food & Wine industry. The CRC will assist Australian food and wine companies to reduce costs and increase productivity and profits as a result of cost savings from co-product development and reduced waste disposal charges.

They will aim to reduce product substitution which will lead to higher sales and market share for Australian food and wine exporters. Greater confidence in Australia’s food and wine brands will lead to greater customer loyalty and new market opportunities. Both aspects will reduce business risks and enhance industry profitability. Less waste will improve the sustainability of Australia’s food and wine sector and may lead to financial opportunities through the Federal Government Emissions Reduction Fund. The benefits the CRC seek for Australia will ultimately be greater economic growth, protection of our valuable national food and wine brand in the global marketplace, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and more employment within the food and wine industry, particularly in regions. The eight-member CRC Advisory Committee and seven Department of Industry, Innovation and Science staff recently held the final bid interview. The Department will be advising successful bids shortly. Should the bid be successful the Fight Food Waste & Fraud CRC will develop a research program based on Transforming Waste, Packaging Innovation, Brand Protection and Education & Training to profit Australia’s food and wine industry.
