CHAILIGHTS SUMMER 2013 EDITION 8 C A M P M O U N T A I N C H A I WAY UP THE TALL GREEN MOUNTAINS THERE’S A CAMP WE HAVE ALL COME TO SHAREI see it at every major life event — weddings, gradua7ons, bar mitzvahs, any 7me family and friends gather to celebrate a significant milestone — that huge smile and even bigger hug when one very long7me camp friend sees another. The immediate connec7on and feeling of absolute familiarity take over, transcending 7me, geographic limita7ons, and the busy pace of our lives. Yes, camp friends are our best friends, one of the many, many benefits of the years a boy or girl spends at a summer camp. As the years roll along — and thanks to the twentyfirst century opportuni7es offered through social media, email and Skype — I have been able to keep in even closer contact with my decadesold camp friends than I ever thought possible. So, recently, I wondered why are these camp friends my best friends? The largest con7ngent of friends I have on Facebook are camp friends, and the idea of missing a camp reunion and the opportunity to spend a few more precious days with these best friends — at the actual place where these deep bonds were formed — is not an op7on! So, what gives? Why are our camp friends so oJen our best friends? I have a few theories, including the uncomplicated life we enjoy at camp that affords us the 7me to develop these close rela7onships, the success and growth we experience sidebyside, and quite simply, that camp is a place we can return to for so many summers. Indeed, many of us were lucky enough to begin camp at eight or nine years old, and we con7nued through our school and college years, into our young adult years, and even beyond. These are all sound premises, but admiMedly, I don’t have an exact answer to this very happy reality. In his book Homesick and Happy: How Time Away from Parents Can Help a Child Grow, author Michael Thompson interviews a group of five women in their for7es, all with families of their own, who first became friends at a summer camp. Together, they’d progressed through the ranks of young camper, senior camper, counselorintraining, and head counselor. Thompson, too, could not find an exact answer as to why camp friends are so oJen our best friends, but he came up with a few theories of his own aJer speaking with this group. These include the ritual ac7vi7es and tradi7ons at camp, the freedom and opportunity to be the person you want to be at camp, the shared love of camp, and the physical in7macy of the unfeMered cabin life that campers enjoy. Each of these theories makes sense, but the sum, of course, is far greater than the individual causes, to the degree that even Thompson admits there is something else going on here that perhaps no one can completely iden7fy. We are about to embark on another summer filled with endless poten7al...I can’t wait to see the outcome! IN THIS EDITION... C A M P M O U N T A I N C H A I

“WAY UP THE TALL GREEN MOUNTAINS THERE’S A CAMP WE HAVE ALL COME TO SHARE”

I  see  it  at  every  major  life  event  —  weddings,  gradua7ons,  bar  mitzvahs,  any  7me  family  and  friends  gather  to  celebrate  a  significant  milestone  —  that  huge  smile  and  even  bigger  hug  when  one  very  long7me  camp  friend  sees  another.

As  the  years  roll  along  —  and  thanks  to  the  twenty-‐first  century  opportuni7es  offered  through  social  media,  e-‐mail  and  Skype  —  I  have  been  able  to  keep  in  even  closer  contact  with  my  decades-‐old  camp  friends  than  I  ever  thought  possible.

I  have  a  few  theories,  including  the  uncomplicated  life  we  enjoy  at  camp  that  affords  us  the  7me  to  develop  these  close  rela7onships,  the  success  and  growth  we  experience  side-‐by-‐side,  and  quite  simply,  that  camp  is  a  place  we  can  return  to  for  so  many  summers.

In  his  book  Homesick  and  Happy:  How  Time  Away  from  Parents  Can  Help  a  Child  Grow,  author  Michael  Thompson  interviews  a  group  of  five  women  in  their  for7es,  all  with

families  of  their  own,  who  first  became  friends  at  a  summer  camp.  Together,  they’d  progressed  through  the  ranks  of  young  camper,  senior  camper,  counselor-‐in-‐training,  and  head  counselor.

I  grew  up  in  Minneapolis,  Minnesota  and  spent  many  childhood  summers  at  Herzl  Camp,  a  Jewish  camp  in  Wisconsin.  I’m  a  recent  graduate  from  San  Diego  State  University,  where  I  majored  in  Communica(on  Studies  and  Business  Management.

While  at  SDSU,  I  served  as  the  student  president  of  JAM  (Jewish  American  Movement),  and  had  the  opportunity  to  travel  to  Israel  many  (mes  through  Jewish  youth  organiza(ons  and  speak  to  many  other  young  Jewish  leaders  around  the  world.  Growing  up,  I  was  involved  in  USY  and  was  ac(ve  in  many  other  Jewish  organiza(ons.

In  total,  this  will  be  my  16th  summer  at  overnight  camp  (whoa!),  and  my  5th  year  working  at  one.  I  love  running,  swimming  and  hiking,  however  my  favorite  sport  is  Ul(mate  Frisbee.  I  look  forward  to  coming  back  this  summer  and  leading  our  staff  and  campers  in  crea(ng  a  safe,  fun  and  memorable  experience!

Noah Larky 10th Grade,  Atid  2013How  many  summers  have  you  been  at  CMC?I  have  aRended  CMC  for  6  summers. What  was  your  favorite  memory  from  Summer  2012?The  Maccabiah  Rope  Burning  compeGGon.    Building  a  15  foot  fire  is  not  something  that  you  get  to  do  everyday.  The  moment  when  I  won,  Gme  seemed  to  slow  as  our  team  went  crazy.    It  is  a  memory  that  I  will  never  forget,  and  an  experience  I  will  take  with  me  forever.  What  excites  you  most  about  this  coming  summer? The  ATID  trips.  Whitewater  raXing  and  visiGng  Zion  NaGonal  Park  will  be  two  incredible  experiences.  In  addiGon  to  the  sense  of  community,  the  bonding,  hiking,  traveling,  and  camping  which  the  trips  entail  is  what  defines  ATID.What  three  words  would  you  use  to  describe  CMC?Community,  fun,  life-‐changing!    What  do  you  like  most  about  Shabbat  at  camp,  and  why? The  song  session.    It  is  a  Gme  when  everything  else  is  forgoRen,  except  going  crazy  singing,  dancing,  and  being  Jewish.    Shabbat  is  one  of  the  best  parts  of  camp,  and  the  song  session  defines  it.What  was  the  best  part  about  last  summer’s  AHd  trip?  The  bonding  between  campers  and  counselors.  We  did  incredible  hikes  and  acGviGes,  but  the  highlight  was  the  bonding.  ATID  forms  a  community  unlike  any  other  unit  at  camp.

Claire Wengrod 11th Grade,  Kavanah  2013How  many  summers  have  you  been  at  CMC?Kavanah  will  be  my  fourth  summer  at  CMCWhat  was  your  favorite  moment/memory  from  Summer  2012?Hmm…that’s  a  hard  one.  My  favorite  moment  at  camp  during  summer  2012  was  receiving  my  camper  blanket.  This  is  really  special  to  me  because  I  was  nominated  by  my  best  friends  and  it  showed  me  my  spot  in  the  CMC  community.  What  made  you  want  to  sign  up  for  Kavanah  this  summer? To  further  my  Jewish  educaGon,  perform  community  service  and  help  those  in  need  and  to  be  with  my  camp  friends  for  5  weeks.  What  excites  you  the  most  about  this  opportunity? This  is  the  first  Gme  Kavanah  is  happening,  which  means  we’re  the  first  group  of  CMC  campers  to  experience  something  like  this.  I’m  also  excited  to  be  helping  people  in  need  by  volunteering  in  Oregon. What  three  words  would  you  use  to  describe  CMC?  Home,  Incredible,  Welcoming. What  do  you  like  most  about  camp?  Why?There  are  endless  things  I  like  about  camp  but  the  ones  that  have  had  the  most  impact  on  my  everyday  life  are  my  leadership  skills,  and  the  friendships  I’ve  made.  During  school,  I’m  able  to  use  the  skills  I  gained  from  the  AGd  trips  and  much  more  and  teach  others  as  well.  I’ve  made  amazing,  life  long  friendships  at  CMC  and  I  honestly  don’t  know  where  I  would  be  without  the  friendships  I  have.  I  cannot  image  my  life  without  CMC.

Samantha Tabak 11th Grade,  Kavanah  2013How  many  summers  have  you  been  at  CMC?This  will  be  my  fourth  year  at  CMC.What  was  your  favorite  moment/memory  from  Summer  2012?The  enGre  ATID  trip. What  made  you  want  to  sign  up  for  Kavanah  this  summer? To  further  my  Jewish  studies  and  to  spend  Gme  with  my  best  friends,  who  I  only  get  to  see  during  camp. What  excites  you  the  most  about  this  opportunity?MeeGng  new  people  and  also  making  other  people’s  life's  beRer  through  our  volunteering. What  three  words  would  you  use  to  describe  CMC?Safe,  Life-‐Changing,  AmazingWhat  do  you  like  most  about  camp?  Why?The  closeness  between  everybody  that  you  don’t  get  with  your  friends  at  home.  Everyone  in  ATID  was  extremely  close  with  one  another.  You  could  go  up  to  anybody  in  our  unit  and  ask  them  for  help  and  they  would  drop  whatever  they  were  doing  to  help  you.  I  know  that  I’m  going  to  be  friends  with  some  of  these  people  for  the  rest  of  my  life  and  I’m  so  thankful  that  I  met  them  because  personally,  these  people  and  these  experiences  have  really  shaped  me  to  be  a  beRer  person.

2013 CMC CAMPERS + Years at Camp

Page 8: Chai'Lights Summer 2013

It’s Time to Start Thinking About Packing…Ah  yes,  the  good  old  summertime!  In  CMC-‐land,  that  means  time  to  order  all  the  glitter  for  Omanut,  perhaps  a  new  soccer  ball  for  Sports,  some  goggles  for  the  pool,  hundreds  of  pounds  of  RED  &  BLUE  face  paint  for  Maccabiah,    blue  &  green paint  for  Embassy  and  many  more  items  that  CMC  could  not  possibly  live  without!  For  CMC  campers  and  parents,  it  means  time  to  pack  for  camp!  For  first  time  parents,  this  can  seem  daunting…how  much  sunscreen  should  I  pack?  Flashlights?  Sleeping  bag?  Will  my  child  really  have  enough  shirts  for  an  entire  session?  Don’t  worry,  we’ve  got  you  covered!  Most  camps  provide  parents  with  an  extensive  packing  list.  CMC  is  one  such  camp,  and  a  packing  guide  was  included  in  the  Getting  Ready  for  Camp  2013  Parent  Handbook  (P.  25).  This  list  should  not  be  disregarded.  It  was  compiled  by  camping  professionals  with  years  of  camping  experience  who  understand  exactly  what  needs  to  be  included  in  order  for  your  child(ren)  to  have  a  successful  summer  at  camp.  A  few  things  to  keep  in  mind  as  you  pack  for  the  summer…

Space  at  camp  is  somewhat  limited.  Your  camper  will  not  have  his  or  her  own  room;  rather,  he  or  she  will  share  a  cabin  with  several  other  campers  and  counselors.  That  means  there  is  not  a  ton  of  space  for  “extras”  and  labeling  clothes  becomes  necessary  as  mix-‐ups  are  otherwise  bound  to  happen.  If  laundry  is  a  concern,  please  rest  assured  that  camp  laundry  is  done  once  per  week  and  your  child’s  counselors  will  see  to  it  that  your  child  has  clean  clothes.

That  said,  summer  camp  values  tend  to  downgrade  appearance.  Let’s  face  it;  camp  is  a  place  for  children  to  have  fun  and  make  friends  in  a  safe  environment.  Before  the  session  is  up,  campers  might  get  wet,  slimy,  greasy,  painted  on  and  a  host  of  other  messy  adjectives  that  could  –  theoretically  speaking  –  happen  while  your  camper  is  having  FUN  at  camp!  To  that  end,  it  is  probably  best  to  keep  the  good  stuff  at  home  and  send  clothes  that  neither  you  nor  your  camper  will  miss  if  it  needs  to  be  retired  at  the  end  of  the  summer.

As  important  as  it  is  to  pay  attention  to  the  packing  list,  it’s  equally  important  to  pay  attention  to  items  that  we  ask  that  our  campers  not  bring  to  camp.  There  is  a  reason  we  request  certain  items  not  be  brought  to  camp.  Some  of  these  are  safety  reasons.  Other  reasons  are  to  help  us  facilitate  a  specific  type  of  environment.  Typically,  these  center  around  electronic  items,  and,  more  specifically,  cell  phones.  Please  (please,  please)  note  our  new  policy  this  year  regarding  cell  phones.  Any  cell  phone  discovered  at  camp  will  be  confiscated  and  not  returned.  We’ve  highlighted  this  policy  in  our  Parent  Handbook.  You  and  your  camper(s)  have  signed  our  cell  phone  policy  in  your  packet  of  forms.  We  can’t  stress  our  policy  any  further.
