Michele Schipper President

Join us for a special Fourth of July dinner after Shabbat Services

June 30, 2017.

The cost is $5.00 per person.

Please RSVP by Monday, June 26th, to Mindy Humphrey at [email protected].

Veggie burgers will be available if requested in advance in your RSVP.

As a kick-off to the summer season, please join us for the BIC semi-annual meeting, Sunday, June 4 at 4:30 p.m. The meeting will have a different format this year. We are taking this opportunity to share brief BIC updates, but then we will socialize with our fellow congregants, and engage together as we plan programs for the coming year. There are many opportunities for involvement within the temple, as well as opportunities to engage with the greater community. We’ll have delicious refreshments. Babysitting will be provided. Please join us!

For the upcoming High Holidays this year, we will be using the new High Holiday prayer books. You will see from the insert in this Chailights, that there are opportunities to dedicate our new Machzor Mishkan HaNefesh. This is a wonderful way to honor a family member or friend or to remember a loved one. I'd like to thank Rabbi Debra Kassoff for serving as Youth Director these past three years. Rabbi Kassoff is moving on to a new adventure (more information on page 4) but will remain part of the Beth Israel community. Please join me in wishing her congratulations on her new job!

SISTERHOOD SPOTLIGHT

Chailights Page 3

"Unity is strength...when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved." ~Mattie J.T. Stepanek Shalom! I hope everyone is enjoying Spring and having fun getting ready for summer! This year has flown by so quickly. As I reflect on this past year as Sisterhood President, I am filled with gratitude for all of the support Sisterhood has been shown. It is YOU who helps to make our Sisterhood a successful & thriving entity of the BIC community. Thank you! In June, Sisterhood Board will be meeting to plan our budget for the new fiscal year and our calendar activities. We will be sure to share information via Chailights, BIC Blasts, Sisterhood emails, Sisterhood Closed Group on Facebook, and other ways as necessary. We hope that you will join us this coming year. If you have any wonderful and exciting new ideas for activities, and if you are interested in helping out in any way, please let me know. Frankie Springer, my Co-President this past year, has resigned from the Sisterhood Board. I want to thank her for all of her hard work and diligence throughout the year in helping to make Sisterhood run so smoothly. We are going to miss her on our Board, and I am going to miss her partnership. We wish her the very best. Please know that you may contact me if you have any Sisterhood questions or concerns. I am available via phone, text, or email. My contact info is: Cell Phone: 601-454-2148 Texting: 601-454-2148 Email: [email protected] ** Due to my work schedule, please call me after work hours only - unless it is an emergency. Thank you! I hope to see you at many events during the year! Best regards,

Suzanne Freedman Sisterhood President

Beth Israel Congregants: As you know, our BIC Annual Bazaar is one of the oldest and of course, still going strong, as witnessed by the visitors to our 50th year celebration. We have put together a congregational survey that will be important to the future and the sustainability of the Beth Israel Bazaar. Please take time to read and respond either by email or return to the Temple office. We feel that it is imperative, at this time, to get a pulse from the membership as to your thoughts, observances, suggestions, and willingness to participate by answering the questions offered through this survey. The Bazaar is a wonderful congregational event that calls out to each and everyone one of us to participate, men, women, and yes, even to our young people who help every year. With this being said, our very successful Beth Israel image maker and sustainer has also continued to grow in cooking, organizing, set-up, take-down, and working not only that one day, but many days before hand. We ask that you please email the survey to the addresses below. Thank you for your prompt return by June 15th. Jo Ann Gordon & Paula Erlich Suzanne Freedman Co-Chairman President

Religious School

Beth Israel Congregation would like to thank Jeff Good

and the Mangia Bene company for their generous dona-

tion of gift cards for us to be able to express our apprecia-

tion to our volunteer teachers. Mangia Bene is the compa-

ny that owns Bravo, Broad Street Bakery and Sal &

Mookies.

A Sort of Farewell (emailed to religious school and youth programs families on

May 17th, 2017)

Dear Friends,

As many of you have learned since my announcement on

Sunday morning, I will not be continuing as Religious

Educator and Youth Director at Beth Israel Congregation

beyond this month. Rabbi Kurtz-Lendner and our

congregational board are working on finding a successor,

and I will work with them to ensure a smooth transition.

For three years I have had the honor and pleasure to serve in

this position and to play a very special role in the lives of

our congregation’s children and youth. I will miss much

about my work here. I thank you all for the opportunity, and

for entrusting your children’s religious education and Jewish

identity formation, in part, to me and to the wonderful

volunteer teachers and advisors who have worked with me

over the years.

It is time for me to take on new professional challenges. On Friday I accepted a full-time position as

Development Associate with the new Mississippi Public

Broadcasting Foundation. In this position I’m looking

forward to learning a lot about professional fundraising, and

to using my skills as teacher, counselor, story teller, and

community builder in a new arena. During my time on the

staff of Beth Israel Congregation I have been blessed by the

support and confidence of our religious school parents,

teachers, students, and many other members of the

congregation. I feel confident that, going forward in my new

-old role as a Beth Israel congregant, I will find plentiful

ways to match and give back in return for all I have re-

ceived.

Shalom uv’rachah—peace and blessing, and l’chayyim—

here’s to many more years of Jewish life for all of us, to-

gether.

Sincerely and with affection,

Rabbi Debra Kassoff

Religious School Registration for the 2017-2018 school year will open later this summer.

Families, watch your email for more details!

Thank You to our wonderful teachers, madrikhim, and BITY advisors,

and to all the parents, congregants, and students (too many

to name) who contributed in other ways.

It takes a shtetl!

The folks named below worked especially hard this year.

Please thank them when you see them.
