Presentation & goals of the project

3 approaches...IDF has worked jointly with FAO and IFCN using different

approaches:

IDF approach is aimed at assessing feeding systems diversity and their relative importance in a country.

FAO approach is aimed at developing country-wise feed basket for different ruminant species to assess green house gas emissions animal species and animal product wise globally.

IFCN approach aimed at the economics and feed efficiency analysis of typical farms in participating countries

IDF approach:diversity of the feeding systems worldwide

MethodologyA data survey has been designed by the partner organizations

involved in the project (IDF, FAO and IFCN).

The questionnaire was divided in three parts:

Part #1: general overview of the national milk production.

Part #2: average stucture of dairy farms in the country (number of cows, milk yield, fat and protein contents).

Part #3: diversity of feeding systems identified by each country with their own criteria (farm size, climate, etc.)

IDF approach:diversity of the feeding systems worldwide

Results 25 countries answered the questionnaire. 20 answers

have been taken into account.

Three examples:

• France: 5 different feeding systems identified

=> region

• Japan: 3 different feeding systems identified

=> size

• South Africa: 3 different feeding systems identified

=> feeding system

IDF approach:diversity of the feeding systems worldwide

Conclusion IDF approach allows us to have an overview of the

different feeding systems within a country but also makes possible comparisons between countries.

It attempts to explain the technical diversity of feeding systems in the dairy sector worldwide.

It is has proven to be a complex task issue because of the large number of parameters that identify different feeding systems (herd size, breed, forage availability, etc) and the different weight they have in different environments ( region, climatic zones, etc.)

IDF approach:diversity of the feeding systems worldwide

Importance of a consolidated IDF-IFCN-FAO report of approaches and results

The process developed (method, questionnaires, partners identified, etc) is useful for new work and available to dairy and feed industries

The results being synthesized into a comprehensive monograph will be a source of information for new developments of the dairy or feed industry.

These results could be very useful for new studies attempting to relate feeding systems to changes in milk quantity and quality.
