Ron Raymond’s CFL NEWSLETTER Week 2 Ron’s Preview The CFL kicked off the 2010 campaign with a Canada Day Classic, as the Montreal Alouettes and Saskatchewan Roughriders went toe to toe and delivered a double overtime thriller, with the Roughriders coming out on top 54-51. The Roughriders and Alouettes looked great on offense, but their de- fenses have some work to do, because both gave up 40 points during four quarters and 50+ points with the overtimes. In order to win some football games, you have to step up defensively and neither defenses dominated in Week 1. Plus, Riders QB Darian Durant is going to have to rely on other receiv- ers, because other teams will start paying more attention to Dressler and Fantuz, which will force Durant to make his second and third reads. Montreal played well on the road, but had they receive more consis- tency from the running back position from Avon Coburn, they could have put this game away in the fourth quarter. Defenses will need to step up for week 2 from both the Alouettes and Roughriders this week- end. The Toronto Argonauts started were they left off in 2009, because they didn’t play well in their first showdown against the Stampeders. The Ar- gos got away from their running game and you can’t win football games when you give your best running back the ball 8 times per game. The Stampeders didn’t play any better, they couldn’t put some consistent drives together on offense and they looked old at the receiver position. The Argos defense looked decent on the road, but the offensive coordi- nator for the Argos will have to game plan for a quick game offense and give QB Cleo Lemon more confidence by giving him quick 3 step drops and getting the ball out of the backfield quicker. Ron Raymond’s CFL Newsletter WEEK #2

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers were a 3 point road underdog by kick off and I was not surprised they won 49-29 vs. the Hamilton Tiger Cats. In fact, I had them as a -2 point home favorite and they were my 5* CFL Game of the Week for Week 1. Bombers QB Buck Pierce played a fantastic game for Winnipeg and they received balance contribution from all of their skilled positioned play-ers. The Hamilton Tiger Cats have issues at the right tackle position, as Rottier wasn’t able to contain the defensive ends, which in turn, forced QB Kevin Glenn to rush his progression and threw the entire offense off balanced. The Tiger Cats gave too many sacks and the offensive lined never gave their offense enough time to make a play. Once the Tiger Cats rectify their offensive line mistakes, they will be a good football team. The BC Lions nearly played a perfect road game in the CFL on Sunday night in the home opener for the Edmonton Eskimos. What really impressed me about the Lions was their size at the Re-ceiver position. The Lions have veteran receivers who know how to get open and they used that experience on the road to get open for their QB Casey Printers. In fact, Casey Printers did a nice job of spreading the ball around, each receiver got 3 or more catches and made big plays to keep the offense driving. Furthermore, the biggest surprise was former Argonauts running back Jamal Robertson who rushed for 168 yards. The Edmonton Eskimos didn’t looked sharp on offense, Arkee Whitlock played well, but the of-fense didn’t have that big game changing play to give them the momentum and confidence to break through. As for the Lions, they will need to score once they get into the red zone, as they kicked too many field goals and that could have burned them had the Eskimos convert their late

Toronto (46.5) vs. Winnipeg (-11.5) Friday, July 9th, 2010 Game time : 8 : 00 PM

Ron’s Pick: UNDER 46.5 (2*)

Keys to selection: The Winnipeg Blue Bombers looked great last week and it was nice to see a passing game incorporated into their offensive game plan, as Winnipeg’s aerial assault the last few season was non apparent. Bombers QB Buck Pierce seems to be the missing piece to the offensive puzzle and he made his reads and threw right on mark to hit his targets last week. The Book-makers have made the Bombers a whopping -11.5 point home favorite this weekend and it seems to be a field goal more then I had anticipated, as I felt the line should have been hover-ing around 9’ish. In fact, this will be the first time since Week 14 of the 2007 season the Bomb-ers will be a -10 point or more home favorite and before that, it was Week 17 of the 2003 sea-son. In a nutshell, the Bombers have been a Home Favorite once since the 2003 season, so this is new territory for them. The Argos have issue on the offensive side of the ball, their de-fense in my view is middle of the league pack and can stay within the posted number. Con-sider the UNDER

ATSDatabase.com Stat of the Game: When ANY CFL Team played as Home team as a Favorite -After a conference game -Before a conference game -Vs Toronto opponent - Allowed scored 30 points or less against; the HOME FAVE is 2-11-0 ATS in this spot.

Ron’s Pick: Hamilton -2.5 (5* GAME OF THE WEEK)

Keys to selection: The Hamilton Tiger-Cats were like a sinking boat last weekend in Winnipeg, each time they patched one hole, another hole re-appeared and that hole was Simeon Rottier at Right Tackle. The Tiger Cats showed great desire to not fold the tent and call it a night, they “crawled” back into the game, but some big plays from the Bombers in the second half took the wind out of their sails. The Calgary Stampeders won last week against the Toronto Argonauts at home, but don’t let the 30-16 final score fool you; the Stamps could have easily lost that game with the score be-ing 10-6 at the half and 14-6 after 3 quarters. The Stampeders looked old on offense and it will be interesting to see down the stretch if they look for receiver help, as this unit seems to have aged and not in a good way. The Tiger Cats are a home favorite this weekend of -2.5 points and the way they’ve played at home in the preseason and last weekend against a decent Bombers club, they should prevail in this contest. Furthermore, if you’re considering this to be a low scor-ing affair, the UNDER is a perfect 5-0 for the Ticats the last 5 years when they are a home favor-ite of -3.0 points or less, and 8-1-0 since 2001.

Forecast: Hamilton 33 Calgary 16

ATSDatabase.com Stat of the Game: When HAMILTON team played as Home team as a Favorite - Coming off a Score 28 - 31 POINTS FOR in last game; The Ticats are 11-1-1 SU in this role.

Saskatchewan (54.0) vs. B.C. Lions (-2.5) Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Game time : 10 : 00 PM

Ron’s Pick: BC Lions -2.5 (2*)

Keys to selection: The Roughriders and Alouettes kicked off the 2010 season with a Canada Day Classic; the final score was 54-51 Saskatchewan in double overtime. However, what concerns me about the Rid-ers; they allowed 40 points against during regulation at home. Now, the Green Riders hit the road for the Lions season home opener and this game will be played outdoors in the new Em-pire Stadium, because they are renovating BC Place (dome) and installing a retractable roof. Since 1996, the Riders are 1-5 SU and ATS when they are a -3.0 points or less Road Underdog and the total is between 51.5 to 54.0. The BC Lions are coming off a +4.0 point road underdog win over Ricky Ray and the Edmonton Eskimos in their season opener last weekend and they were led by RB Jamal Robertson who rushed for 168 yards. The only concern I have for the Li-ons, they need to convert more in the red zone, as Casey Printers and the offense stalled 6 times and had to settle for field goals. The Lions kept Ricky Ray to 229 yards passing and when you consider the Lions kept the Eskimos to 10 points in a high scoring league like the CFL, you have to think they have a serious defense in British Columbia. Plus, the Riders are coming off an emotional home underdog win over the Alouettes and got their revenge for losing the Grey Cup last November, so this is your classic letdown situation for Saskatchewan on the road in what should be a high energized outdoor crowd at Empire Stadium.

Forecast: BC Lions 28 Saskatchewan 24

ATSDatabase.com Stat of the Game: When ANY CFL Team played as Home team as a Favorite -After a conference game -Before a non division game - Coming off a game scored 24 points or more - Coming off a Road win as a Underdog; the Home Favorite is 11-1 SU and 8-3-0 ATS in this situation.

Montreal (-5.5) vs. Edmonton (53.5) Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Game time : 7 : 00 PM

Ron’s Pick: Edmonton +5.5 (2*)

Keys to selection: The Alouettes will play their second road game this week and it doesn’t finish there, as they will need to play the BC Lions in Week 3 and that will have been 3 road games to start off the 2010 Season. Why are they playing 3 straight road games to start the season? The Alouettes reno-vated Molson Stadium and they didn’t think it would have been ready to start the season. The Als are sound on offense, but they gave up 40 points in regulation to Saskatchewan and 54 when it was all done in double overtime. The Alouettes have never played well in Edmonton, they are 1-6 SU and ATS the last 7 years and they will be facing an Eskimos team looking to get back on track, as they only mustered 10 points on offense last Sunday vs. the Lions. The Eski-mos have the Roughriders on deck, that worries me a bit, but not as a +5.5 point home under-dog. When I made the line, I thought we would have seen a PK to -1 Montreal favorite, so I was pretty surprised to see the bookmakers hang -5.5 points in this one. The Eskimos are 7-2-0 ATS as a home underdog of 6 points or less the last 5 years, so they relish this pointspread position. As long as Avon Coburn doesn’t run wild on the Edmonton Eskimos defense like Jamal Robert-son did last week, Ricky Ray and the Eskimos can pull off the home underdog upset and send the Grey Cup champs to a 0-2 SU start. Furthermore, I have a sneaky suspicion, Alouettes Head Coach Mark Trestman’s decision to go for it on a 3rd and 2 yards to go call in the second quarter last week, could be a decision that haunts in the entire 2010 campaign, as the media will reference this decision in the future.

Forecast: Edmonton 33 Montreal 28

ATSDatabase.com Stat of the Game: When ANY CFL team played as a Home team -With 6 day off - Coming off a Home loss as a Favorite; the Home Fave is 15-1 SU and 11-4-1 ATS in this spot since 1996.
