Entry to Teaching Courses for 2018 The number of Victorian university graduates applying to become teachers has fallen nearly 40% in a year. This drop has triggered concerns about potential teacher shortages into the future. Requirements for getting into a teaching course will rise this year, with ATAR’s set at a minimum of 65 for 2018 and 70 in 2019. From this year, Victorian universities will only be allowed to offer two-year graduate entry initial teacher education programs, instead of one-year courses which were known as the Diploma of Education. This may have deterred some students from pursuing a teaching career, although the difficulty in finding full-time work could be a contributor as well. Bachelor of Science (Adv.) and Doctor of Dental Medicine The faculties of Dentistry and Science joined forces to create a new chapter in

dental education: the Bachelor of Science (Advanced) and Doctor of Dental Medicine. Just like the Doctor of Dental Medicine, students graduate from this double degree as a dentist, eligible for registration with the Dental Board of Australia. An added advantage is that graduates attain an in-depth understanding of the sciences to provide a strong foundation for postgraduate study.

The seven-year course is ideal for dentistry students who want challenge and flexibility in their degree. Not only will students improve their knowledge of the sciences, they will also be able to indulge their personal interests by studying subjects offered by other faculties.

Applicants are eligible to apply for the double degree in Dentistry at the first opportunity after graduating high school, regardless of when their results are available. Admission to this course is for a limited number of outstanding applicants each year and applicants will also have to participate in an interview.

Snapshot of Deakin – Waurn Ponds Campus • The Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus is home to the Geelong Technology Precinct. The

precinct focuses on Deakin's core research capabilities in materials, biotechnology, chemistry, and environmental engineering, along with regional strengths in manufacturing and agri-processing.

• The Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus is also home to the brand new CADET building – the Centre for Advanced Design in Engineering Training. The $55 million state-of-the-art facility houses some of the most advanced and future-focused simulation and visualisation systems, purpose-built interactive laboratories and learning environments in the country.

• 2015 saw the first intake of students to the new 4-year Medical Imaging course offered at the Waurn Ponds Campus - Medical Imaging. The department is a fully equipped x-ray department, and students have access to adult-sized human models designed to be x-rayed and reflect human-like responses to x-rays.

• Deakin University's Faculty of Health offers Australia's first accelerated optometry course. Offered as a combined course, the Bachelor of Vision Science/Master of Optometry - Optometry. Students have access to a dedicated simulated optometry store for simulated exercises. Deakin Optometry is housed in the Regional Community Health Hub (REACH) building.

• Deakin’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences - Exercise & Sport Science - is also in the REACH building. Again, exercise & sport science students have access to state-of-the-art equipment. Of note is the added fact that Deakin's School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences is ranked the number one sport science school in the world, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

• The School of Medicine - School of Medicine – is another state-of-the-art facility at the Deakin Waurn Ponds Campus. It opened in 2008 and offers a 4-year graduate medical degree, with 2 years of pre-clinical education at the University campus in Waurn Ponds, and then 2 years’ clinical education and experience in one of its clinical schools – hospitals as far-flung as Ballarat to Box Hill.

News from Swinburne New Bachelor of Engineering Practice (Honours)

Swinburne will be releasing a new Bachelor of Engineering Practice (Honours) degree from 2018. This course will offer an alternative to the traditional teaching and assessment approaches in engineering. It has been co-designed with multiple industry partners to ensure that future graduates will be well-prepared to go into an existing company or create their own. Entry to the degree will be based on interview rather than ATAR results and assessment will be based on individual performance within a team rather than on exams. The degree will run alongside the existing Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), and will conform to the requirements for accreditation by Engineers Australia and students will graduate as engineers. Students should note that any maths is acceptable. Find out more at Bachelor of Engineering Practice (Honours)

Bachelor of Biomedicine to Master of Physiotherapy The Bachelor of Biomedicine at La Trobe University is a suitable degree

to use as a pathway to the 2-year Master of Physiotherapy Practice. Students should note that La Trobe graduates are given first preference when applying for this program. So, as long as students ensure they complete tertiary-level subjects in anatomy, neuroanatomy, physiology and biomechanics, and meet the minimum requirements of a WAM of 65 per cent and all relevant prerequisites, they set themselves up to be eligible to be considered for entry into the Master of Physiotherapy Practice. The Master of Physiotherapy Practice is accredited by the Australian Physiotherapy Council, and graduates of the Master of Physiotherapy Practice may be eligible to apply for registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia. Professional registration may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. For more information visit Master of Physiotherapy Practice

NOTE: A number of other Victorian universities also have overseas campuses where part of a degree can be studied. In addition, all universities have ‘partner’ overseas universities where part of a Victorian degree can be completed (eg a semester). Universities encourage this option, and will assist with organising placements. They will sometimes assist with travel costs as well. An advantage of this program is that the fees for completing the overseas placement remain the same as they would be if the student was studying in Victoria.

Profile of Myotherapy/Massage Therapy Students often enquire about what Myotherapy is, where one can study for it and the possible pre-requisite studies.

A Myotherapist usually assesses and treats patients with postural problems, with the aim of restoring the body to its ideal state. This generally involves the manual

realignment of muscles, joints, ligaments, and tissues which have become damaged or misaligned. Often Myotherapists plan, apply and assess massage treatment in the health care and soft tissue treatment industries. Myotherapy is offered at several institutions including Australian College of Sports Therapy, Box Hill Institute, Chisholm Institute, Holmesglen Institute, RMIT, and Southern School of Natural Therapies, to name a few. For most institutions, there are no pre-requisite VCE studies.

An AAP APP… Yep, a FREE app for AAP’s! Q. What is AAP? A. Australian Apprenticeship Pathways. Why should you bother? There are a squillion jobs that can begin with an apprenticeship or traineeship. (Well, maybe I exaggerate!) You can search through over 3000 examples of apprenticeship and trainee occupations on this free app. Look Out… While the app doesn’t show real jobs, it does give you an idea of the type of apprenticeships & traineeships you can do, and this gives you the power to negotiate with your current boss, or a future one. (aka, show them the AAP APP and ask them if they can turn your job into a traineeship or apprenticeship. Simples!) Heck, if you are going to work for money, you may as well turn it into a qualification along the way! Don’t you think that having qualifications under your belt makes you rather attractive to employers? (Sorry, that sounds kinda creepy – but you know what I mean!) This, in turn, makes job seeking (for the future you) far easier. Spending 10 minutes of your time, exploring this app, is a great investment for your future!
