Introduction by Susan Wallace, Principal “Every year I see new students embrace the concepts we teach. I watch as their confidence and self-belief soars to new heights. I witness them overcome personal limitations and help others achieve their goals.” Susan Wallace, Principal of Hypnosis Academy Welcome to Hypnosis Academy. I am delighted that you are reading our prospectus. I hope it will provide you with all the information you need to plan your training in professional hypnotherapy. Learning clinical and therapeutic hypnosis can be a life changing experience. Our students discover the tremendous potential we all have for changing our lives by challenging and changing our thinking. With so many courses to choose from it is hard to know which one might be right for you. So here is our view – Choose a college that won’t limit its course curriculum to teaching just one theoretical model or style of hypnosis. Choose one that can teach you all of the theoretical models and styles of hypnosis. Remember, that each of your clients will present with their own unique suggestibility. Your job is to match your style to their presenting suggestibility. If you have only learned Ericksonian hypnotherapy or indirect suggestion then you probably won’t be able to communicate on a meaningful level with each new client. For example, some people respond best to permissive open-ended suggestions, others are mesmerized by the directness of stage hypnosis while others respond to a more Neo-Ericksonian approach. Because we understand this, we teach you all the styles of suggestion from all of the theoretical models of hypnosis. This will ensure you can help every client experience hypnosis in their own subjective way. Furthermore, we teach evidence-based cognitive behavioural techniques and hypnotic interventions that have been proven effective from clinical studies. This ensures you can be confident you are delivering highly effective therapeutic strategies. We strive to keep our administrative overheads low so that we can continue to remain one of the most competitive colleges in the marketplace. This allows us to pass on our savings to you without affecting the quality of our delivery, course materials and our client and graduate services. We also know that learning a new skill can take time, so we record all of our hypnotherapy sessions in the classroom and give them to you, so you can continue to learn at your own pace between modules and to refresh your skills when you have graduated. I do hope you will consider training with us and if you would like to speak to me personally please feel free to call me. My team and myself are here to help. Warmly yours, Susan Wallace My mobile number is: 086 343 2992 Office in Laois: 05787 33916 We are open from: 10am to 5pm

What makes training with Susan Wallace and Hypnosis Academy unique? Secrets of Successful Inductions Closing your eyes and having a hypnotic induction script read to you does not create the hypnotic state. There are certain key procedures essential to enhance suggestibility beyond normal everyday awareness. Once Susan has shown you how to master these techniques you will be able to hypnotise everyone quickly and easily. And additionally, you won’t need to read from a script to do it successfully. Cognitive & Behavioural Hypnosis (CBH) Cognitive and behavioural therapy skills are essential for the modern hypnotherapist who wants to give clients skills to last a lifetime. CBH helps clients to recognise the inter-relationship between our thoughts, our feelings and our actions and how our thoughts can affect what believe and what we feel. CBH teaches us how to “talk back” to sabotaging thoughts and to develop more adaptive thinking skills. Susan will show you how to work from a cognitive behavioural approach without compromising the belief and expectancy that our clients anticipate from hypnotherapy. Past Life Regression Do you believe you have lived before? Susan believes that it really doesn’t matter what your own personal opinion on this question may be. What is, however, important is this: If your client suddenly has an abreaction and gets absorbed in a past life experience, then you need the skills and training to effectively handle the abreaction and re-orientate them back to this moment in time. Susan will teach you how to ensure your client gets maximum therapeutic benefit from the experience and help them emerge free from trauma and with positive and useful newfound skills. Rapid & Instant Inductions Most hypnotherapists rely on what have now become old-fashioned relaxation techniques to create the hypnotic state. However, there are now modern inductions that fire off a re-orientation response instead of a relaxation response, and they work extremely well. They allow you to put a person into hypnosis in less than ten minutes. Susan is a master of client centred non-verbal inductions, rapid inductions and instant inductions. She will also teach you how to ensure you client goes deeper into the experience of hypnosis each and every time they are hypnotised. Mindfulness and Awareness New studies in psychology highlight the similarities between mindfulness and hypnosis and demonstrate that there are very effective mindful inductions available to help clients experience the mental shifts needed so that they can begin to re-organise their thoughts, feelings and behaviours. These new induction techniques can help hypnotherapists to work in a more meaningful level with people who are ambiguous about the efficacy of hypnotherapy as psychotherapy.

Meet the Team Susan  Wallace, NGH, RTS, AC Hyp, Dip Hyp, MNLP, RCBH, is the CEO of Cognitive Hypnosis Academy. Susan is a Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist with more than 20 years full-time experience. She is the founding member of the Irish Hypnotherapy Association in Ireland and has been lecturing and teaching hypnotherapy for more than twelve years. She runs a busy therapy practice in St. Albans and runs groups and workshops in the UK, Ireland and India including her signature training courses such as The Bump Whisperer, 101 Hypnotic Inductions, Boot Camp Hypnotherapy and the Fast Track Practitioner Diploma courses. Susan has also served her time in field and experimental hypnosis and was part of the Institute of Positive Transformation in the UK. She has worked on such prestigious programmes as the Friendly Spider Programme at London Zoo, Sell More Cars, Fearless Flying and the Stop Smoking Now group hypnosis programmes at the IPT and the Farago Clinic. Susan believes that learning hypnotherapy should be dynamic, engaging, interesting, experimental and thought provoking. She fosters great relationships between students on her courses so that when they graduate they become part of a network of caring, supportive therapists. Susan Wallace takes most classes with Robert and Martin providing our extensive CPD courses after graduation. Robert  McKeon - Rob has a BA in Psychology, an MA in Addiction Studies and a Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy and is a certified hypnotherapist. Rob runs many of the Continued Professional Development courses to graduates and professional therapists. This is what he has to say…

‘It truly is an exciting time to be working in hypnotherapy. Now that science has established that we can change our brains and the expression of our genes with the focused inner attention of our minds, it is up to us, the hypnotherapists, as the experts in facilitating that process to step up and show people how to achieve all that hypnotherapy can offer. The more we can ground our work in modern evidence-based practice the more opportunities we will have to expand our work and gain greater exposure and recognition. Learning cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy is a good place to start.’

Martin  Neary, RC Hyp, Dip Hyp, is our regression expert. Martin brings a wealth of client experience to the classroom from his life experiences and is skilled in breaking down techniques so students can easily integrate inductions and regression techniques in a way that bolsters confidence and resolves client issues in a timely manner.

Accreditation and the UK Framework of Hypnotherapy Skills In order to be eligible for Hypnosis Practitioner Status within the UK framework of hypnotherapy qualifications, it is essential that you undertake a course of study that provides no less than 120 hours of classroom-based training with a requirement of 450 hours in total. As a training academy we adhere to the strict training standards laid down by the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), the Hypnotherapy Regulatory Forum (HRF) and the Complimentary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNCH) which was set up though the Department of Health to oversee the voluntary regulation of complimentary medicine in the UK. We constantly refer to the Core Curriculum, the Learning Outcomes and the Principles of Good Practice established by these bodies. These documents can be accessed though this link: www. general-hypnotherapy-register.com/training-standards/ This study is essential for students to receive their qualifications and to join the General Hypnotherapy Register and the Complimentary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNCH). This study is also essential for students and graduates to apply for Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance as a professional hypnotherapist working in the complementary medicine sector. The required 450 hours of study is comprised of 120 hours of classroom-based training, plus study and assignments, case studies, research and time developing your own niche market within the complimentary market sector. Whilst is may seem like a lot, it is time well spent, as good preparation will make it easy for you to get up-and-running soon after receipt of your Practitioners Diploma. Here at Hypnosis Academy we help to make sure you enjoy the experience of immersing yourself in the world of clinical and therapeutic hypnosis. We provide you with everything you need to fill the required criteria. Here is an overview of how we help you achieve the required study, learning outcomes and gain valuable experience in working with clients through case studies. Case Studies Students are required to complete case studies and undertake research and assignments. All of this is done with the guidance, assistance and full support of your qualified tutor. Ten case studies have to be submitted, with each case study comprising of approximately 3 hours of face-to-face therapy with each client. A further 2 hours of preparation and case development is recommended. This is followed by approximately one hour of reflective and critical evaluation and writing up each report. Case studies help build our students confidence. They develop reflective and strategic thinking skills. They improve listening skills and build both competence and confidence. Furthermore case studies help our students to establish themselves in their local area and can help to develop a referral scheme, which can make it easier for our graduates to get fee-paid clients upon receipt of their Professional Diploma. Classroom sharing of case study experiences develops case formulation strategies and technical skills. They teach our students how to manage caseloads and build an ethical, professional referral and follow-up system. If for example, we had a group of 15 students with each student discussing their 10 case studies over the course of their training that would provide each student in that group with the working knowledge of 150 case studies

before they graduate. They would learn case conceptualisation, critical analysis and technical breakdown and intervention development for a wide variety of common challenges and goals. The information from case studies is used to contextualise the dynamic techniques and interventions we teach. This helps our students to understand when to use interventions such as age regression, parts therapy hypno-analysis, desensitisation and other evidenced based methodologies. Written Assignments Completed Case Studies must be written up appropriately using the documentation we provide. Further written Assignments are based upon the Three Learning Outcomes developed by the Hypnotherapy Regulatory Forum to ensure key skills are understood. Reading Requirements In addition to engaging, face-to-face classroom training, we also provide the following professionally produced course materials for study and skills development. • The Therapeutic Hypnotherapist Manual • Mechanics of Hypnotic Induction, Deepening and Emerging Techniques • Case Study Pack and Graduates Pack—A compendium of PDF documents you need

for each new client. • Clinical and Therapeutic Hypnotherapy Course Manual • Clinicians Guide to Case Assessment and Implementation • Cognitive and Behavioural Hypnotherapy – A Diploma Course Manual Master Classes

Why train in hypnosis? ‘Hypnosis is a vehicle or tool for delivering information, amplifying client responisveness and facilitating learning on multidimentional levels.’ Yapko, Hypnosis and the Treatment of Depression, 1992. Alladin in one of our referenced text books, lists the following as strengths of hypnotherapy that are either empirically informed or supported:

• Hypnosis adds leverage to treatment and shortens time • Hypnosis serves as a strong placebo • Hypnosis breaks resistance with techniques such as paradoxical instruction • Hypnosis fosters a strong therapeutic alliance • Hypnosis facilitates rapid transference • Hypnosis induces deep relaxation • Hypnosis strengthens the ego and counteracts negative self hypnosis • Hypnosis facilitates divergent thinking by maximising the focus of attention • Hypnosis directs attention to wider experiences • Hypnosis allows engagement of the non-dominant hemisphere • Hypnosis enables access to non-consciousness processes • Hypnosis allows integration of and organising of emotions • Hypnosis facilitates imagery conditioning • Hypnosis induces dreams and can increase dream recall • Hypnosis induces positive moods • Hypnosis provides Post Hypnotic Suggestions • Hypnosis enhances training in positive self-hypnosis • Hypnosis creates perceived self-efficacy • Hypnosis techniques are easily exported to support many forms of therapy.

Alladin’s use of language is most interesting. There is something about hypnosis that facilitates, enhances, adds, fosters, induces, strengthens, allows, enables and creates. It can turn mere suggestion into a powerful internal response. It then creates a knock-on effect on cognitions, behaviours, emotions and physical reactions.

Public opinion and statistics continue to rate hypnotherapy as being the primary method for helping people stop smoking, lose weight, conquer fear, gain confidence, reduce stress, break habits and prevent negative thinking. If there is a psychological root to a problem or if there is a negative thought or unhelpful belief that is stopping someone from doing something – then hypnotherapy can help. Cognitive Hypnotherapy – An Integrated Approach to the Treatment of Emotional Disorders (2008, PP 10-16)
