PURPOSE OF PROGRAMThe CertTESL provides the specialized training you need to begin teaching the English language in the U.S. or abroad, whether you are exploring a career change, adding specialized training to current professional skills or planning to teach English after retirement. No prior training in language teaching or linguistics is required.
Practical, hands-on courses offer you a general foundation in methods, techniques and strategies for teaching English to all ages. The program places a special emphasis on teaching English in multilingual settings, preparing you to offer socially responsible and linguistically appropriate lessons to help students develop strong intercultural communication skills.
PROGRAM OPTIONSThe CertTESL consists of 15 credit hours (five graduate courses), which you may take at your own pace. The certificate can be completed within one calendar year.
You can tailor career goals by choosing courses in two areas: language teaching methods and literacy.
The three core courses are: • Foundations in Second Language Acquisition• Listening and Speaking in Second Language Programs• Internship in English as a Second Language
Courses that are part of the certificate program include:ESL 5053 Approaches to Second Language InstructionESL 5073 Computer Assisted Language LearningESL 5033 Second Language Reading and WritingESL 6043 Family and Adult Literacy in Language Minority Communities
*Note: The Certificate in TESL is not equivalent to teacher certification in ESL or bilingual education in Texas, although some courses may overlap. Individuals interested in teacher certification should consult with the College of Education and Human Development about teacher certification programs.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIESAs global migration and international trade is becoming routine, more individuals need to learn English in order to communicate. As a result, the demand for those with basic training in ESL is increasing and the opportunities to teach worldwide are expanding. Certification prepares you to work in areas such as: community-based language programs for immigrants and refugees, private language schools abroad, corporate training/consulting, international aid work, tutoring learners of English.

Admission RequirementsCurrent degree-seeking graduate students at UTSA should contact the Certificate Program Advisor to complete a form requesting to enter the CertTESL program.
If you are not currently enrolled in a graduate degree program at UTSA, you will apply for the CertTESL as a Special Graduate Student. Admissions requirements for Special Graduate Students are:
• A baccalaureate degree• A 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 30 semester credit hours of coursework for the baccalaureate degree and for all graduate-level coursework• Be in good academic standing at the last institution attended• International students must have a TOEFL score of 550 or greater on the paper-based exam or a minimum of 79-80 on the Internet-based exam.

Graduate assistantship positions available within the College average 19 hours per week. Doctoral students also may be eligible for fellowships.
Students pursuing a certificate as Special Graduate Students will not be eligible for financial aid.
