About this courseA career in construction isn’t all about working in the trades. If you’re interested in working in the service and/or administrative side of WA’s fast-paced and dynamic construction industry this qualification is for you. This two-year para-professional qualification has been specifically designed for school students who are interested in a non-trade career in the construction industry. Several of the competencies included in this qualification provide a foundation for higher level units in the Certificate IV in Building and Construction and lead to Diploma of Building Surveying with career opportunities in areas including:
• Estimating
• Scheduling
• Purchasing/procurement
• Drafting
• Site supervision and management

Overview
Two years, one day per week, Friday 8:30am to 4:00pm
You will learn how to:
• Develop residential building industry knowledge
• Produce appropriate word processed documents
• Communicate in the workplace
• Carry out basic measurements and calculations for residential buildings
• Read and interpret plans and specifications
• Participate in OHS processes
• Apply knowledge of residential building processes and materials
• Create and use industry specific spreadsheets
• Undertake application of building codes and standards to residential buildings
• Apply principles of sustainability in residential building practices
• Use CAD software template to produce 2-D drawings of residential buildings
• Undertake basic estimation and costing from contract documents

Work practiceIn addition the course will include a total of 110 hrs work placement with major contractors companies.The students will gain a valuable insight to the construction industry practices working alongside experienced professionals. South Metropolitan TAFE will work with the student in finding suitable work practice.
