It is one of the key milestones before it begins operation. The maneuver was completed in recent weeks and the receiver (an extraordinarily complex part weighing 2,300 tons) was positioned in the foundation octagon in the CSP Plant’s central tower, at a height of 220 meters. The receiver’s function is to concentrate solar radiation reflected from the 10,600 heliostats that surround the 250-meter tower that will heat the salt to be stored to generate electricity.
The first quarter of 2020 was marked by great milestones. The most notable are:
46 thousand tons of salt from the Atacama Desert were melted at the Cerro Dominador CSP Plant, the first of its kind in Latin America. The salt from Minera SQM is apt for conserving the energy captured by the plant during the day and that energy is stored in tanks, available 24 hours a day, which gives the power grid a great flexibility. These salts are kept at extremely high temperatures: 560ºC in the hot tanks and 290ºC in the cold salt tanks. The melting process was completed in 56 days. The project is being built by a consortium formed by Acciona and Abengoa. Other suppliers, such as Herlogas S.A., Chumillas Technology, MMYPEM Jr S.L.U. and Empresas Lipigas, have also participated.
The salts are
completely molten.
Below are highlights on Cerro Dominador in the first quarter of 2020.
The 100 MW photovoltaic plant (PV) is in commercial operation.
The progress in the construction of the concentrated solar power (CSP) plant was 92% in the quarter.
The PV Plant generated 299.63 GWh in 2019, its second year of operation.
Projects under development are the Likana 450-600 MW CSP Plant and the Pampa Union 210 MW solar power plant.
Cerro Dominador has responded to the health contingency by actively working to protect the health of its employees, those of contractors and the community in general.
COVID 19ContingencyPlans
Different recommendations and measures ordered by the health
authority have been informed and are being kept updated.
Around 80% of Cerro Dominador’s employees are working remotely.
On-site shifts are being alternated with telecommuting.
Shifts are being designed for the use of shared spaces, such as dining halls, so that people can maintain the appropriate social
distance.
Everyone’s temperature is taken before they get on the bus to work. Any employee presenting COVID-19-like symptoms at work will be
taken immediately to a polyclinic or care center for a check-up by a physician. Everyone who has been in contact with the patient will be
sent home.
Shared spaces are sanitized frequently.
Emergency plans are being coordinated with regional and
local authorities.
Emergency kits are being distributed at plants that
contain inputs such as alcohol gel and masks.
Food boxes and health care kits have been donated to the community of Maria Elena through the municipality. An informational campaign has been conducted in the
community to explain prevention and control measures.
