Favorite Physician or Industry Online Venue: AMIA

Brief Professional Biography:

Education: BS in Biology (Alabama); MD (UAB); MBA (Alabama); Internal

Medicine Internship (UAB); Emergency Medicine Residency (Richland Me-

morial Hospital – now Palmetto Health).

I practiced emergency medicine full time in Mobile, Alabama for 19 years

and was the physician champion for our ED’s 1993 implementation of

voice recognition for documentation and 2004 implementation of a full

EDIS including CPOE. In 2005 I joined Cerner as a consulting physician

executive and was Medical Director of US Consulting when I left to accept

a position as UAB Health System’s CMIO in October 2011.

Brief Summary of Cerner Solution Expertise:

During my 6 years as a Cerner associate my focus was on physician adop-

tion, especially PowerChart, FirstNet and PowerChart Ambulatory. While

at Cerner I also formed a FirstNet optimization team and spent a fair

amount of time performing assessments at client sites live with First-

Net. Before becoming their CMIO I worked with UAB Health System as a

Cerner consultant and helped implement PowerChart, CPOE, PowerNote,

PowerChart Maternity, and Meds Rec. We began rolling PowerChart Am-

bulatory (including CPOE, PowerNote and e-prescribing) out to our 150+

clinics in May 2011 and will complete the implementation later this year.

Title: MIO, Baptist Easley Hospital; Medical Director Wound Care & Hyper-

baric Center

Organization: Baptist Easley Hospital (Palmetto Health)

City, State: Easley, SC

Specialty/Specialties: Fellow, American Board of Family Medicine

Email: [email protected]

Brief Professional Biography:

After completing my Family Medicine residency at Medical Center of Dela-

ware (now Christiana Care), I opened a rural family medicine office in Liber-

ty, SC. The practice thrived, and in 2005 we became the second practice in

the county to convert to EMR. As the hospital moved forward with steadily

rolling out the Cerner EMR, I decided to leave primary care and work as the

Physician Informatics Liaison, while still using the system clinically while

working as part-time Hospitalist and ED physician. My role has now been

redefined as MIO for Baptist Easley Hospital, and while I continue to work

PRN in ED and inpatient side, most of my current clinical work is in our

Wound Center.

Brief Summary of Cerner Solution Expertise:

We started in 2003 with laboratory and radiology results and transcription

online, and have steadily added functionality to reach our current paperless

chart, both ED and inpatient. We are currently in the midst of converting all

our outpatient practices to PowerWorks, with expected completion date of

11/2012.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital

Chicago, IL

Email: [email protected]

Brief Professional Biography:

My primary academic/administrative/clinical interest is in quality, infor-

mation systems, patient safety, care-pathways and administrative medicine

relating to; creating/supporting evidence-based approaches to patient care,

establishing standards, developing process/protocols to support the stand-

Regarding anesthesia and electronic medical record documentation: An

AIMS (anesthesia information management system) consists of a complex

array of process and technology assembled to document perioperative pa-
