Lutung Kasarung Story in English

A long time ago in west Java there was a kingdom. he king was !ra"u a#ak Agung. $e had

two "eauti%ul daughters and no son. !ur"a Rarang was his %irst daughter& and !ur"a Sari was

his se'ond daughter. (hen the king was a"out to #ass away he gave the throne to his se'ond

daughter& !ur"a Sari. !ur"a Rarang was very disa##ointed. She thought that she deserve to

re#la'e her %ather as the ruler. She dis'ussed the situation with her %ian')& Indra*aya.

hen she got an evil idea. She asked a wit'h to 'ast a s#ell to !ur"a Sari. Soon a%ter that !ur"aSari had a strange skin disease. here were "la'k dots on her skin. She also had skin rash.

Conse+uently !ur"a Rarang had a reason to tell #eo#le that her sister had a great sin and she

was 'ursed "y god. She told her #eo#le that su'h a #erson did not +uali%y to "e a leader.

A%ter that she ordered the army to send !ur"a Sari to a wood and had her e,iled there. he

army then "uilt a wooden house %or !ur"a Sari in a wood. So !ur"a Sari lived in the wood. As

there were many animals in the wood she got along with them well.

$er "est %riend was a "la'k monkey. She 'alled the monkey Lutung Kasarung. Lutung was very

attentive and very kind to her. $e gave %ruits and vegeta"les to !ur"a Sari.

Lutung Kasarung was not an ordinary monkey. $e o%ten meditates like human "eing. -ne night

when there was a %ull moon he sat meditating. $e was #raying to od. Suddenly a s#ring

emerged "eside Lutung. It "e'ame "igger and "igger and %inally it "e'ame a lake. he water

was very 'lear and aromati'.

he ne,t day Lutung 'ame to see !ur"a Sari. $e asked her to %ollow him. Lutung took her to

the lake and asked her to take a "ath. (hen !ur"a Sari took "ath in the lake something strange

ha##ened. $er skin disease was gone and her smooth %air skin was "a'k. !ur"a Sari was very

ha##y and thank%ul to od.

/eanwhile !ur"a Rarang who lived in the #ala'e wanted to see her sister. So she went to the

wood with her soldiers. She was very sur#rised when she saw !ur"a Sari was in good 'ondition

and looked "eauti%ul. $er evil heart led her to %ind a way to "eat her sister. hen she asked her

sister to measure the length o% their hair. he one who had the longest hair would win. !ur"a

Sari0s hair #roved to "e longer than !ur"a Rarang0s.

!ur"a Rarang was very *ealous to her sister. She thought hard to %ind a way to "eat !ur"a Sari.

hen she got another idea. She asked her sister to 'om#are their %ian'). !ur"a Rarang was

sure that she would win "e'ause Indra Jaya was very handsome. She was sure that !ur"a Sari

did not have any %ian'). (hen !ur"a Rarang showed Indra Jaya& !ur"a Sari was 'on%used. So

she *ust a##ointed Lutung Kasarung as her %ian').

Long time ago in the island o% Java there was a kingdom o% Kediri. he king was Raden !utra.

$e was a ri'h and #ower%ul king. $e liked 'o'k %ighting. -ne o% his wives told him that the

+ueen had #ut #oison in his %ood. he king was very angry. (ithout thinking dee#ly and without

'he'king this in%ormation& he immediately ordered his soldiers to "ring the +ueen to a wood

and kill her. Soon the soldiers took her to the wood. But when they were there the soldiers took

a #ity on her. hey did not want to kill her "e'ause she was a kind and wise +ueen and at that

time she was #regnant. So they "uilt a house and let the +ueen live there. hen they "rought

"a'k to #ala'e a deer0s heart to show the king that they had killed her.

Several months later the +ueen gave "irth to a "a"y "oy. $e was a healthy and handsome "oy.

$is name was Cinde Laras. hen he grew u# to "e a strong and smart "oy. $e liked to go to

the wood. -ne day he %ound an egg. $e "rought it home and then when it hat'hed it "e'ame a

'o'k. Like his %ather& Cinde Laras like 'o'k %ighting. $e o%ten went to neigh"oring villages to

a snail. It was ugly and disgusting.

'uc&' said "ewi #imaran and then she threw it away into a river.

She did not &now that the snail was actually an old and power%ul witch. She could

trans%orm hersel% into anything. The witch was angry to "ewi #imaran. The witch put

a spell on her and changed her into a golden snail. The witch then threw it away into

the river.

The golden snail was dri%ting away in the river and got caught into a net. An old

woman was %ishing and used her net to catch some %ish. She was surprised to see a

golden snail in her net. She too& it and brought it home. *hen the old woman wo&e

up in the morning, she was surprised that the house was in the good condition.

The %loor was mopped. And she also had %ood on the table. She was thin&ing very

hard.

wanted to brea& the witch$s spell. A%ter several days praying and meditating, %inally

gods granted his wish. e immediately brought the holy gamelan to the old woman$s

house. e played it beauti%ully. And then ama/ingly the golden snail turned into thebeauti%ul "ewi #imaran.
