FOREWORD
No year passes in NASA without a solid record ofspace and aeronautical achievements. Over nearly twodecades of this agency's existence, our annualaccomplishments have not been happenstance. We havereached new heights not only because of hard work andplanning, but also because of NASA employees _whogave to their positions that "something extra." With thisceremony, we honor these people for creativity inmanagement, exceptional performance, equal opportunityachievement, and for unselfish community service toothers.
Nineteen seventy-seven has pointed the way to humanpermanence in space for the next decade with thesuccessful free .flights of the Space Shuttle. We havepushed farther out the limits of Deep SpaceExploration. Technology transfer from the corridors ofspace is a continuous process, daily benefitting humanlife on Earth. The men and women whom we honorhave exerted their utmost efforts in carrying out ourprimary missions. They know that they have helped tomake history.

FOREWORD
The Langley Research Center celebrates its 60thanniversary this year. Last year we observed ourNation's 200th birthday. It is well that we pause andreflect upon our heritage and the many contributionsprovided by Langley employees to our country.
It is equally important to look. ahead to our ambitiousgoals. Langley Research Center is challenged to furnishcritical technologies needed for continued progress andadvances in numerous terrestrial and aerospace areas. Toachieve these goals the essential factor is dedicated andcapable people, such as those receiving recognitiontoday.
I extend my appreciation to each member of the stafffor their contributions and support, especially those weare honoring at this ceremony.
