What is a Stroke?
A stroke occurs when something is preventing oxygenated blood from reaching the brain.

Statistics 273,000 people die every year from
a stroke in the U.S. 700,000 people in the U.S. suffer a
stroke every year. 3rd leading cause of death.
Types of Strokes
IschemicThis type of stroke is caused by a
blockage. Hemorrhagic
This type of stroke is caused by bleeding in the brain.

• Causes: High cholesterol diet, high blood pressure, smoking, heredity, and inactivity

Signs and Symptoms
Onset of Symptoms Embolic – rapid onset Thrombotic – gradual onset
Signs Blindness or hearing problems Confusion Dizziness and/or loss of balance Numbness or weakness on one side of body Severe headaches
Additional Symptoms
Other symptoms may include:Nausea and/or vomitingTIA’sLoss of consciousness
