Could you describe your careerpath since leaving Kent? I moved to London shortly aftercompleting my degree. At thatpoint, I had little professional studioexperience and needed to find workfast. Luckily, I was able to get someshort-term work through friends.I also secured a period of workexperience at Miloco Studios, where I became fully acquaintedwith the workings of a professionalrecording studio. I also made somegood friends and valuable contacts.I then landed a job as a collegesessional lecturer, teaching musictechnology, which I did for a yearalongside studying for apostgraduate certificate ineducation (PGCE).

Keen to fully immerse myself instudio life again, I took the positionof assistant (and eventually juniorengineer) at the world-renownedSarm Studios. It was a tough job, involving long hours. However,I learned a lot and also hadthe opportunity to assist thelegendary producer Trevor Horn.I worked with many artists, includingJake Bugg, Mika, Birdy, Lily Allenand Seal.

After a year at Sarm, I decided to go freelance. Being associated witha studio gives you steady work but,as a freelancer, you need to buildgood relationships with recordlabel A&R reps, artists and studiomanagers to keep working. Thereis no typical day and some monthsyou are working every day, whileothers you have no work for weeks.

What did you enjoy about yourstudies at Kent?I liked the fact that I could sculptmy studies to suit my interests.I have a passion for composingcinematic music and, as the courseprogressed, I began to concentratemore on composition and chosemodules on subjects that involvedmusic and audio to image. However,I also spent a lot of my spare timerecording, editing and mixing, eitherat home or in the studio.

Being surrounded by creatives, musicians and technicians wasone of the reasons I enjoyed thecourse so much – it gave me theopportunity to work with like-mindedpeople in a mutually beneficialenvironment.

What about the teaching? Kent is a research university, whichmeans all of the teaching staffare current in practising their trade. For students, this is great becauseyou know you are gaining the mostup-to-date knowledge in yoursubject. Being taught by industry-specific lecturers also providesan invaluable insight into themusic tech world.

What were your impressionsof the campus? Being located at the HistoricDockyard was a real bonus. Wewere based in a community fullof listed buildings, which wasan inspiring place to study. Theopportunity for recording in thespaces around the Dockyardwas a real privilege.
