Pastor’s Notes As we look around us we see the unmistakable signs
of approaching spring. The days are longer, the temperature seems
to be rising, the grass is turning green and the birds are singing
and nesting. It is a wonderful time of year filled with hope and
anticipation. In the church, we are in the midst of Lent; Holy Week
and Easter are nearly upon us. And that same feeling of hope and
anticipation fills us these days. These words resonate with me, in
the wake of General Conference, in the thoughtfulness of Lent, in
the anticipation of Easter.
When we are all despairing; when the world is full of grief; when
we see no way ahead,
and hope has gone away:
Roll back the stone.
Although we fear change; although we are not ready; although we’d
rather weep
and run away:
Roll back the stone.
Because we’re coming with the women; because we hope where hope is
vain; because you call us from the grave
and show the way:
Roll back the stone. By Janet Morley Join us this Holy Week and
Easter as we celebrate hope. April 14th is Passion/Palm Sunday with
worship at 8:30 and 11:00am. We will worship on Maundy Thursday and
Good Friday at 7pm each of those days. Easter worship will be at
8:30 and 11:00am. Join us as we celebrate the rolled-back stone
together! Still in One Peace, Pastor Michelle

Central UMC is delighted to welcome two new staff members in March
and April! Paul Incitti joins us as our new Custodian. His first
day was March 25, and he worked with Gregg Wood for a week before
Gregg’s retirement on March 29th. Until recently, Paul lived and
worked in Israel, in construction, maintenance, project management,
and customer service. Paul has relocated back to his hometown of
Owego. Maureen O’Neill will be joining us as our new Executive
Secretary, beginning April 23. She will work with Pat Breneman for
a week prior to Pat’s retirement date of April 30. She sends this
greeting: I was born and raised in Binghamton NY & graduated
from Seton Catholic Central. I'm the youngest sibling of 4
children. A few years after graduation I decided to move to South
Florida to a much warmer climate! After being in South Florida, I
realized that I missed my family & friends and wanted to move
back to the Binghamton area. I'm a mother of 3 boys, 20, 18, and
15. I'm a big animal lover--I currently have 3 dogs. I love the
different seasons, especially the fall. I'm a very social person
and looking forward to working with the community at Central United
Methodist Church! We are delighted to welcome Paul and Maureen;
stop by and say hello sometime soon!

all of those wonderful helping hands at the Shrove Tuesday Pancake

helped prepare the meal, serve and clean up. And also the many who
came to eat. We especially want to thank our pancake master, Steve
Klock, who made making 200 pancakes look easy. All of the money
raised will go toward Children's and Youth outreach programs. Pat

ever-present crises of our current culture? Ed Cyzewski says,
"Contemplative prayer is the intimate experience of God within us.
It begins with a simple intention to be present for our loving God
and trusts God's indwelling Holy Spirit will do the work of prayer
and transformation within us."

Finance Update There is an energy and a spirit in Central. One way
this is shown, is by the financial position. Thanks to the
stewardship of all of you, Central is in a positive financial
position. January was the best giving month ever for a January;
February was a low month, but going into March, Central still had a
strong balance. We are thankful of the generosity of you all, and
your willingness to give in so many ways. As we look forward to the
events of Easter, we are called to be 'spiritual givers' to support
the ministries, programs and outreach of Central. Finance

UMW Sky Lake Retreat Wednesday, May 22
Amazing Women of the Church Come, be encouraged and inspired by Dr.
Barbara Thorington Green who will lead us in our celebration of
“Amazing Women of the Church” on Wednesday May 22. The retreat will
be at Founder’s Lodge at Sky Lake in Windsor, NY. This is the 150th
anniversary of the United Methodist Women and the 350th birthday of
Susanna Wesley. Dr. Thorington will lead in in hearing the voices
of faith-filled women. We will peek into the life of Susanna
Wesley, instructor and spiritual guide of her 10 children including
John and Charles Wesley. Then we will investigate the work of a few
medieval religious women, and end with discussing how we fit into
their patterns of life and faith today. Susanna writes: “Proclaim
God’s universal love and free grace to all people. Go in the power
of God … this is the hearty prayer of your loving mother.” The cost
is $25/person. The registration form, located in the Welcome
Center, must be submitted to the church office with the fee by May
7.

---SOCIAL JUSTICE--- by MaryBelle Mitten
--Significant Celebrations this month: C-SPAN’s 40 years and United
Methodist Women’s 150 years —
My morning often begins with part of C-SPAN’s Washington Journal on
C-SPAN 1, usually from 7am until 10am, when The U.S. House gavels
in. Brian Lamb was the brain child of C-SPAN (Cable-Satellite
Public Affairs Network), and he still conducts wonderful extensive
interviews with authors about their books. Cable companies (no
Federal money); provide this public service/current events format
by which ordinary citizens, worldwide, can call in and offer their
thoughts about current events. Additional channels, C-SPAN 2 and 3,
hold congressional hearings, book reviews, notable college
graduation speeches, and many other issues of interest for all
political persuasions. All their programing is available for
checking out later in their archives. C-SPAN is a 40 year old
treasure. Back when I was a young woman in Whitney Point UMC and
now here at Central, I grew to love the women and the work they
were doing all over the world for women, children, and youth
through the United Methodist Women, women like Central’s current
President’s late mother, Shirley Daniels, and another faithful
Central family’s matriarch, Alta Hawley, along with so many others,
who welcomed this young neophyte, who is now an old woman. At that
time we were 1,000,000 members; at this time we are a bit fewer
with 800,000 members. I found recently a 1999 issue of our UMW
Response Magazine, titled: The Environment and Our Health. I
highlight here, just a portion of one article titled, Environmental
Justice Principles, adopted in 1998; suggesting we use these in our
homes, our churches, our schools, our workplaces and our
communities:
1) Practice garbage prevention. 2) Recycle and buy recycled. 3)
Maintain zero tolerance for producing toxins. 4) Avoid plastics. 5)
Conserve energy. 6) Produce and consume locally-grown food. 7) Use
naturally safe materials. 8) Promote the well-being of all people!
Sounds like they were written today and not over 20 years
ago?
Thank you United Methodist Women for all you have done for woman,
children and youth and may you continue for the next 150 years and
beyond! So much more could be said.
