Report of the Pastor on the State of the Church To the Charge Conference, 2017

Today I write this report for my 35th Charge Conference serving all over South Carolina from

coast to foothills. This year again, I repeat that the people of Newberry County and Central

United Methodist Church have welcomed us with a most unique and opened armed friendship

and grace. We are most, most grateful!

I have continued to make particular emphasis on pastoral care and counseling as has been

requested by the Committee on Staff Parish Relations and church leadership. This has included

a regular and consistent scheduled and recorded patterns of home and nursing facility visitation

along with hospitals. The church’s Nurture Pastor, The Reverend James H. Williams, has been

an invaluable help and resource in this critical aspect of ordained ministry. We also take Holy

Communion to shut-ins quarterly and always during Advent and Holy Week.

In the greater church beyond Central, I have also been tasked to guide the Greenwood District

Board of Church Location and Buildings as part of my extended ministry. I also serve as a

member of the Annual Conference Board of Ordained Ministry.

The Evangelism Work Area has been completely re-organized under the leadership of Chair,

Lillian Hoeschen. The work of this area is critical to the future and hopes of Central Church.

Reaching out to new worship guests must be the responsibility of all of us, not only the pastor

or staff.

A Communications Work Area has also been developed under the leadership of Coordinator,

Julia Hamilton Cotney. Julia has already completed tremendous ministry in the development

and continual updating of our website. Websites are the entry portal for many individuals who

seek out a church home. All successful churches today have strong communication and

publicity plans. Central is addressing this need.

In the staff area of the congregation, all Job Descriptions have been updated as have the

overall Employment Policies for Central Church.

Donna and I are very glad to be here and look forward to a joint ministry of growth, strength

and Christ’s Holy Spirit.
