The Central Ohio Raingage Network (CORN) is an organization of volunteer precipitation observers … the following organizations have recruited representative members: EMH&T, Inc.; Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR); DLZ, Ohio, Inc.; U.S. Geological Survey / Water Resources Division; Burgess & Niple, Ltd., and Nisource. The CORN report is published monthly by Bob Davis and Mindy Wells of EMH&T, Inc., in Columbus, Ohio.

Notes: 1. Daily precipitation totals shown on previous pages for Gages 1-10, 12-102, 117-208, and 301-308 are for those volunteers who report directly to Bob Davis of EMH&T, Inc. Data shown in italics for remaining gages represent information supplied by National Weather Service Cooperative Observers. Daily totals presented for several of

these observers have been obtained from National Weather Service web sites. For possible daily totals of other gages in network, contact Dave Cashell or Scott Kirk at ODNR / Division of Water.

2. Daily precipitation measurements shown on previous pages are typically taken from plastic rain gauges of at least 5-inch capacity. 3. “Station I.D.” nomenclature is adapted from National Weather Service procedure for naming Cooperative

Observer stations. The station is identified either by the nearest community or well-known landmark, along with a distance in miles, and direction from that community or landmark, if it exceeds approximately one mile. For example, Marion 2N represents a site that is approximately 2 miles north of the City of Marion. If no distance or direction is included with the Station I.D., the station is located within the community, or less than one mile from the identified landmark.

4. Gage ID numbers from 201-208, and 301-308 represent volunteers whose gages are located outside of the 10-county area officially designated by the NWS as the “Central Ohio” climatic section. 5. Corrections: Gage #83 Oct. yr. = 42.45”; Nov. yr. = 44.40”. Gage #120 Oct. yr. = 34.65”; Nov. yr. = 36.75” Gage #119 Yr. precip. for Jul., Aug., Sep., Oct., and Nov. = M. 6. SUMMARY INFORMATION for December 2006

Precipitation averaged slightly above normal over the NW, NE and SW sectors, and near normal over the SE sector of our network during December. Monthly totals at individual stations ranged from 2.37 inches at Shadeville 3W in southwestern Franklin County to 4.88 inches at OSU Don Scott Airport 1ESE in northwestern Franklin County. Outside of our official 10-county Central Ohio area, our volunteer at Bryan in extreme northwestern Ohio reported 5.19 inches of precipitation in December. Sector averages for the month were as follows: NW = 3.72”; NE = 3.12”; SE = 2.90”, and SW = 3.24”. The 4-sector average for December was 3.25 inches; normal precipitation for December at Port Columbus is 2.93 inches. Port Columbus recorded only 0.1 inch of snowfall during the month; normal snowfall for December is 4.7 inches. The snowfall total for the season is also only 0.1 inch; normal snowfall for the period of October through December at Port Columbus is 6.6 inches. The most significant storm of the month occurred during the period of November 30 - December 1. The storm of November 30 - December 1 was entirely a rainfall event, and was associated with the approach and passage of an intense low pressure center and cold front. The main portion of the rain began in the early afternoon of the 30th for the extreme western and northwestern sections of our network, and then gradually spread into the remainder of our network during the evening of the 30th. The rainfall continued until about mid-morning, with many of our volunteers west of I-71 reporting at least 1 inch of rain. Nearly 2.5 inches of rain fell in portions of Union County. The timing of the rain caused considerable problems for the calculation of our sector averages for both November and December, as our morning-reading volunteers did not report the rainfall from this storm until December, while our late afternoon and evening readers reported various splits of rainfall over both November and December. While the rainfall from the storm was impressive, the most significant feature of the storm was the wind … sustained winds of 20-40 miles per hour over a number of hours. Most of the official NWS stations in the Central Ohio area reported wind gusts that exceeded 50 miles per hour during the storm. Our volunteer at Johnstown 6ENE in Licking County reported that the strong winds destroyed a two-story garage under construction at his location …it was nearly 75% complete prior to the storm. Precipitation for calendar year 2006 was significantly above normal over nearly all of the Central Ohio area. Annual totals at individual stations ranged from 35.96 inches at Indian Meadows Park in Dublin (northwestern Franklin County) to 62.53 inches at Blacklick Woods 2NNE in Reynoldsburg (extreme east-central Franklin County). Sector averages for the year were as follows: NW = 43.57”; NE = 45.67”; SE = 49.23”, and SW = 47.46”. The 4-sector average for the year was 46.48 inches; normal precipitation for the calendar year at Port Columbus is 38.50 inches. A table showing sector averages since 1995 is presented below for comparison purposes … it can be seen that 2006 was the second wettest year during that 11-year period for the SE and SW sectors (southern half) of our network.

The most significant storm story relating to rainfall in our network during calendar year 2006 was the unusually heavy rainfall totals recorded during October. It was the second wettest October on record for Central Ohio. The 4-sector average for Central Ohio was 6.43 inches … normal precipitation for October at Port Columbus is only 2.31 inches. October also produced its share of severe weather over portions of the area, as golf-ball sized hail produced significant storm damage in a band extending from northern Madison County into southern Licking County on October 4. One week later, on October 11, two tornadoes touched down in Central Ohio. Extensive damage was reported to several homes in the Upper Albany West subdivision in northeastern Franklin County, while isolated damage occurred with a tornado touchdown in rural northwestern Pickaway County. Our annual precipitation summary for calendar year 2006 is provided on pages 26-30 of this report.
