Assignment: 1. Written Assignment: (50 points)
a. Read the assigned chapters below, and answer the discussion questions. Some chapters do not
have any required writing assignments and will only be assessed on the quiz. Most assignments
require you to seek information from other sources or draw your own interpretations. Be sure to
SUMMARIZE, responses must be in your own words or points will be deducted.
b. Assignments swill be submitted through turnitin.com by August 14, 2017.
c. You must provide a citation/work cited at the end of each section of any outside reference used.
d. Completed assignments are DUE Monday. August 14, 2017.
2. Quiz: (50 points) Completed during the first week of school.
Chapters and Discussion Points:
1. “The Lives of a Cell,”, and “Organelles as Organisms,”. A. Describe the structure and role/function of the following cell structures or organelles:
o DNA
o Mitochondria
o Chloroplast
o Cell Membrane
B. Describe the Endosymbiont Hypothesis and explain its value in the evolution of eukaryotic
organelles.
2. “The Music of This Sphere,”. Read the passage only.
3. “The Technology of Medicine,”. A. Contrast the following types of medical technology and provide examples of each: non-technology,
halfway technology, and modern medicine.
4. “Death in the Open,”. Read the passage only.
5. “The MBL,”. Read the passage and do the following: A. The author suggests that the discoveries and research performed by the MBL are due to their
independence from government agencies and other outside forces. Explain why this is important for
a research facility.
6. “Germs,”. Read the passage and do the following: A. Summarize the author’s ideas about germs.
B. Explain, using ideas of natural selection, why there has been an increase in antibiotic resistant
bacteria in recent years.
7. “Natural Man,”. Read the passage and then complete the assignment. Rachel Carson dedicated her book, Silent Spring to Albert Schweitzer who wrote, “Man has lost the
capacity to foresee and to forestall. He will end by destroying the earth.”
A. Read Chapter 1 – A Fable for Tomorrow of Silent Spring. Summarize briefly what happens in
the fable.
B. Use both reading selections to explain your own interpretation of his quote. (Note, if the link
does not work for you, simply Google search Silent Spring pdf.)
8. “The Iks,”. Read the passage and do the following: A. Describe the behavior of the Iks to each other.
B. Explain how cities and nations are like the Iks.
9. “The World’s Biggest Membrane,”. Read the passage and do the following: A. Write out the formula for photosynthesis.
B. Explain the process of photosynthesis in general terms.
C. There are two types of reactions in photosynthesis: the light dependent and light independent.
Contrast the reactants and products of each.
