LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHERSSEE RARE BIRD “DANCE’
Mr. and Mrs. Meryl Graham witnesed the weird and rarely seenmating dance of the sharp-tailedgrouse near Houghton Lake Sunday morning.
This is a strange and fascinatingperformance, with male birds“dancing” beak to beak, whilethe females stand around andwatch. The dancing birds givesounds resembling kitten and puppy cries, turkey gobbles, andother likenesses.
Suddenly, the Grahams rcportedthe whole flock would stop dead, every bird becoming motionlessat the same split second. Then,as suddenly, the dance would begin again, with all the malebirds starting at exactly the samemoment.
The Grahams left home at 2.30

Editor’sColumnABOUT SEPTIC TANKSAND DOGS RUNNING LOOSE
This week we just want to say aword about septic-tank cleanersand what you may run into if youdon’t know your septic-tank people.
A widow in Weidman paid $60.a couple of years ago to have herseptic tank cleaned out. Anotherwidow had hers cleaned last weekend for $15, which, we are told,is the fair and usual price for anormal-sized tank. The thing is to know your septic
tank-cleaner people, and also toknow how septic-tank cleaningis figured as to price.
The ethical method is by thegallon: “Is yours a 500-gallontank? Well, we clean those for$15.” That’s the honest and ethical septic-tank cleaner.
The Weidman widow who paid$60 for a cleaning job was toldit would be figured “by the barrel,11 and she was inexperiencedand took their word for it.
We are fortunate, we feel, inhaving a local man connectedwith a septic-tank cleaning company. He is Don Smith, son ofMrs. Hermie Smith, one of ourWeidman boys whom we all knowand trust.
Don is with the Central Michigan Septic Tank Service, of Mt.Pleasant, and we can get in touchwith the company just by callingDon, right here in Weidman.
Our point is, know how septic-tank cleaning is figured, and donot pay unknown people exorbitantprices for ordinary cleaning jobs.
And now a word on dogs. The law says you can’t let them
run loose, even though you havebought a license and had rabiesshots for the animal.
Weidman has its share of strayor wandering dogs, and dog-owners should know that they can bepicked up by Mt.Pleasant authorities if discovered running freeunless the owner is with them.
Dog owners, who pay quite alot for the privilege of havingdogs, what with licenses and thedistemper and rabies shots andsuch, should consider the alternative. You can pay out all thisand lose your dog, if the dogcatcher sees your dog running freewithout an attendant.
Or you can build a fenced-inyard for it. This need not betoo expensive.

LETTER FROM MRS. RALPH(JETEL) WAGNER
Mrs. Helen Aiwood recently receivgd a nice letter from Mrs.Ralph (Jewel) Wagner, who withher family lived here a numberof years, and had many friends.

Burkesvi lie, KentuckyDear Helen:
Have appreciated your sendingthe paper. It keeps in mind pcopies’ names I might not remember later.
Was so sorry to read about Mrs.McArthur. I sent him a card.Wewere always treated so nice inthe bank.
It is storming here this morning. Getting a rain, after our 80degree weather yesterday. Theboys went to work, but I doubt ifthey stay out. We have had suchchangeable weather for this timeof year, especia11y. We usuallyhave gardens started, but we hadour hot weather back in December, so now we are having a latespring.
I’m sending you a poem I thinkis kind of cute. Connie mightlike to put it in her paper.
I went back into the Rebekahsat Russell Springs, the nearestlodge here. Here is the poem:
Most beautiful word in the worldIsn’t really a word at all;
Not everyone can say it,It requires a Kentucky drawl.
We hillbillies learn to say itBefore we learn our name.A Buckeye can’t repeat itAnd make it sound the same.
It only has five letters,Which makes it rather small;Pt just we hicks from KentuckyCan sweetly say, Ya’al1. ‘T
