SPECIAL NOTE: This guide was compiled based on companystatements, not genetic testing. Any product labeled as Non-GMO indicates that its manufacturing process is designed toavoid GMOs, but consumers should be aware that GM contam-ination is possible due to natural pollen movement, weatherevents, seed contamination, or human error. Hence there isno guarantee such products are 100% free of GMOs.

The Center for Food Safety works to protect human health andthe environment by curbing the proliferation of harmful foodproduction technologies and by promoting organic and otherforms of sustainable agriculture. CFS has offices in Washington,DC and San Francisco, CA.

INTRODUCTION & OVERVIEW

How to avoid brands made with geneticallymodified organisms (GMOs)Genetic Engineering (GE) or Genetic Modification (GM) offood involves the laboratory process of artificially insertinggenes into the DNA of food crops or animals. The result iscalled a genetically modified organism or GMO. GMOs can beengineered with genes from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals,or even humans. Most Americans say they would not eat GMOsif labeled, but unlike most other industrialized countries, theU.S. does not require labeling.

This Non-GMO Shopping Guide is designed to help reclaimyour right to know about the foods you are buying, and helpyou find and avoid GMO foods and ingredients.

Tips for avoiding GM crops

❧ TIP #1: BUY ORGANIC

Certified organic products are not allowed to contain anyGMOs. Therefore, when you purchase products labeled “100%organic,” “organic,” or “made with organic ingredients,” allingredients in these products are not allowed to be producedfrom GMOs. For example, products labeled as “made withorganic ingredients” only require 70% of the ingredients tobe organic, but 100% must be non-GMO.

❧ TIP #2: LOOK FOR“NON-GMO” LABELS

Companies may voluntarily label products as “non-GMO.”Some labels state “non-GMO” while others spell out “MadeWithout Genetically Modified Ingredients.” Some productslimit their claim to only one particular “At-Risk” ingredientsuch as soy lecithin, listing it as “non-GMO.”

2

Page 5: Center for Food Safety

3

❧ TIP #3: AVOID AT-RISK INGREDIENTS

Avoid products made with any of the crops that are GM. MostGM ingredients are products made from the “Big Four:” corn, soybeans, canola, and cottonseed, used in processed foods.

Some of the most common genetically engineered Big Fouringredients in processed foods are:

Corn■ Corn flour, meal, oil, starch, gluten, and syrup■ Sweeteners such as fructose, dextrose, and glucose■ Modified food starch*

Soy■ Soy flour, lecithin, protein, isolate, and isoflavone■ Vegetable oil* and vegetable protein*

Canola Canola oil (also called rapeseed oil)

Cotton Cottonseed oil

*May be derived from other sources

Additionally, GM sugar beet sugar recently entered the foodsupply. Look for organic and non-GMO sweeteners, candy andchocolate products made with 100% cane sugar, evaporatedcane juice, agave, or organic sugar, to avoid GM beet sugar.

❧ TIP #4: BUY PRODUCTS LISTED IN THIS SHOPPING GUIDE

Keep this Guide with you whenever you shop. Store it insideyour reusable shopping bag, put it into your coupon holder orcheck book, or leave it in your car.

FRUITS & VEGETABLES Very few fresh fruits and vegetables for sale in the U.S. aregenetically modified. Novel products such as seedless water-melons are NOT genetically modified. Small amounts ofzucchini, yellow crookneck squash, and sweet corn may beGM. The only commercialized GM fruit is papaya from Hawaii—about half of Hawaii’s papayas are GM.

EGGS

FISHFDA is currently considering approval of the first GE animalintended for human consumption, a genetically engineeredAtlantic salmon. This approval is pending despite overwhelm-ing consumer opposition and unacceptable risks to humanhealth, the marine environment, wild salmon populationsand fishing economies. There are several other GE fish in thepipeline as well. To make matters worse, FDA argues thatthese GE fish don’t even need to be labeled!

Check out our new campaign website at www.ge-fish.org tolearn more and find out what you can do to help stop GE fish.

MEAT & FOWLNo genetically modified fowl or livestock is yet approved forhuman consumption. However, plenty of non-organic foods areproduced from animals raised on GM feed such as grains. Lookfor 100% grass-fed animals.

ALTERNATIVE MEAT PRODUCTSMany alternative meat products are processed and includeingredients that can be genetically engineered, so give theingredient lists close attention to avoid the Big Four at-riskingredients, especially soy.

DAIRY PRODUCTS & ALTERNATIVE DAIRY PRODUCTSSome U.S. dairy farms inject the genetically engineered hor-mone rBGH, also called rBST, into their cows to boost milkproduction—so be sure to purchase products with a label thatindicates cows free of rBGH or rBST. Many alternative dairy prod-ucts are made from soybeans and may contain GM materials.
