Harold Weisberg

You have been a watchdog for the nation, alerting this generation and those of the future

that we must pay attention to and demand accountability from those who would govern us.

For more than 30 years you have devoted your life to uncovering the truth about the chain of

events that followed that terrible tragedy in November 1963, the assassination of a

President. You persisted, despite ill health and personal debt, in challenging the government,

including an appeal to the Supreme Court. Together, you and your beloved wife, Lillian,

have taught us the true meaning of dedication to a cause. Hood College salutes you for your

courage in the face of adversity, and for your dedication to the ideals upon which this

country was founded.

Harold Weisberg has donated a collection

of more than 300,000 pages of government

documents and his research papers relating to

the John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King

assassinations to Hood College. Mr. Weisberg

has spent the last 30 years searching for the

truth about the assassinations, publishing

materials which he believes prove a

government cover-up, and trying to alert

future generations that under stress,

government institutions often fail to do the job

they were created to do. Mr. Weisberg obtained the information in

his collection from the Federal Bureau of

Investigation, the Department of Justice, the

Warren Commission, the Central Intelligence

Agency, the National Archives, and other

government agencies, using the Freedom of Information Act to amass the documents. The

government records fill at least 60 file cabinets. Included in the collection are

hundreds of pages of verbatim transcripts

from the executive sessions of the Warren

Commission. Mr. Weisberg was born in Philadelphia and

was educated in the public schools of

Philadelphia and Wilmington. He attended the

University of Delaware and worked for the

Wilmington Morning News and the

Philadelphia Ledger. He also worked as a

senate committee investigator and served in

the U.S. Army during WWII, first in the

military police and later as an analyst for the

Office of Strategic Services, a forerunner of

the CIA. He is the author of seven books:

Whitewash: The Report on the Warren Report,

(1965); Whitewash II: The FBI/Secret Service

Coverup (1966); Photographic Whitewash

(1967); Oswald in New Orleans (1967);

Whitewash IV (1974); Post Mortem (1975);

and Frame-up (1971), republished in 1993

under the title, Martin Luther King: The

Assassination.

Lillian Stone Weisberg

While working as an editor for several United States Senate investigative committees, you discovered that governments and those who govern are not infallible. Your career led to responsible positions with both private industry and government agencies, and yet you found the time to organize thousands of documents and serve as editor and typesetter for your devoted husband, Harold, making possible the publication of his work. You have opened your home to those searching for answers, and your outreach to others—neighbors, friends and even strangers—has remained steadfast as you have shared your wide-ranging talents: culinary, editorial and financial. It is with great pride that Hood College honors you today.

Mr. and Mr4 Weisberg are a team. Mr. Weisberg does the research and writes, while Mrs. Weisberg organizes the resource materials and edits and types the manuscripts for publication. She also has indexed his published works.

Lillian Stone Weisberg, who grew up in Hyattstown, was educated in Maryland's public schools and was graduated frbm the Strayer Business College.

Throughout her career she has worked for both private and governmental agencies, including six years on Capitol Hill where she

was assistant editor to two Senate Committees, Senator Bertram Wheeler's investigation of the railroad industry and Senator Gerald Nye's investigation of the munitions industry. She has worked as a tax consultant, and assists senior citizens with their tax work.

Prior to moving to Frederick County in 1967, the Weisbergs owned and operated a chicken farm in Hyattstown. In 1956, her flair for cooking earned her the title of National Chicken Cooking Champion and she appeared on numerous television and radio programs.

Presented by Gerald McKnight, Ph.D. Professor of History

Alma Mater

High tower above us, thy columns so fair, Gleaming white in their calm majesty; Thus long have they battled the wild storms of time And will stand in the years yet to be. Though we wander afar from thy sheltering walls, Borne along on life's rough surging sea, Yet our hearts, Alma Mater, unchanging and true Will be loyal and faithful to thee.

Hood College, above thy dear green ivied walls, How fond memories cluster and twine, There are friendships so golden that bind us to thee, Preparation for life, too, was thine. May we never forget thy lessons so true But honor and prise thy dear name. In our joys and our tears, in our triumphs and fears May our lives e'er be worthy of thee.

Gertrude B. Hoy '12
