Jane EnglandI was impressed by the excellent organ-isation and care put into the selection process, with every entry given equal consideration and put to a vote. I think that the final exhibitions will reflect the diversity and varied media of the work sent in – and look forward to seeing the two forthcoming shows.

Nicholas UsherwoodOpen exhibition selection committees can prove a somewhat dispiriting busi-ness – fudges, compromises and a dull consensus often taking the spirit out of things. The London Group’s approach to this problem – to mix outside judges with a dozen or so Group members – worked well with enough nicely differing points of view emerging to ensure an eclectic selection came through, reflecting the excellent send in!

Bruce McLeanI was surprised by the volume of work; many of the pieces looked like Art. I was delighted to be asked to be a judge as it gives an insight into what is going on in other parts of the Art world.

Welcome to The London Group Centenary Open and thank you to all the exhibitors for contributing so superbly to this historic exhibition. When we first reinstated the Open soon after I was elected President I particularly wanted the biennial to coincide with the centenary because it is such an important exhibition for the Group and I am very proud and happy that we are celebrating with it today.

Although the word Open did not appear in an exhibition title until 1984, there were forty exhibitions with non-members before WWII and forty after the War, before this one. I would like us to think back for a moment to the very first London Group Open Exhibition which was held in June 1916 and was the Group’s fourth exhibition. It was introduced as a measure to keep up the number of exhibitors because so many members were fighting in WWI and works by ten non-members were shown. Efforts had to be made to recruit new members to replace those killed at the front and The London Group could easily have just fizzled out and disbanded but remarkably it didn’t and instead it managed to hold two exhibitions a year throughout the War – quite a feat. So despite being tragic we owe the circumstances that triggered that first Open a huge debt of gratitude and without them this exhibition may not be taking place.

Throughout its history (apart from an isolated period up to 2007) the Open has played a major part in the life of the Group and has been a significant element of its raison d’être. Without the Open The London Group would just be a showing society, closed in upon itself, but the Open enables the Group to spread its arms and embrace the nurturing of young and emerging artists, giving them much needed showing opportunities, encouragement and support in their tough careers and to give a special boost to those of exceptional calibre who win prizes. I particularly want to thank our generous sponsors who have made it possible for us to award an outstanding array of prizes and who have helped us to make the Open such a resounding success. The experience of becoming a member of The London Group has really highlighted to me the fantastic diversity that exists in contemporary art practice. As an artpractioner it’s so easy to get trapped inside your own little world. The London Group really takes you outside of the box. David Theobald
