Intern

Example of Journal Article: Residents at risks as ‘1 in 5 subdivided Hong

Kong flats has hazardous air pollutants exceeding safe limits’ (Sept 1, 2015)

Source: SCMP(http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-

environment/article/1854386/one-five-subdivided-hong-kong-flats-has-hazardous)

Summary: Reported by the Clean Air Network, the PM2.5 in 9 of 44 subdivided flats in 6 districts are above the WHO level of 25 micrograms per cubic metre, which may be health hazardous

Commentary:1. Evidence – The new reported the level of PM2.5

but had not shared what instruments and how the measurements were conducted.

2. While it is claimed health hazardous, how is the PM2.5 linked to heart and respiratory problems? What is causing the hazards, the physical or chemical nature of PMs?

Example of Journal Article: Seabirds ‘blighted by plastic waste’ (August

31, 2015)Source: BBC news

Summary: Plastic in the oceans is eaten up by the seabirds. This will eventually kill the birds and reduce the seabird biodiversity.

Commentary:1. Evidence – Reference from a research

conducted by Imperial College and CSIRO, percentage data are quantitative, and compared with historical data. Should be reliable

2. Beyond the percentage of present, the amount of plastics in the seabirds is also important. Does the study report this as well in assessing the severity of the issue?

Article: 13 chicks of an extremely endangered bird species were hatched (Aug 15, 2014)Source: Mingpao

Summary: A Hong Kong guy, CHAN, stayed on a remote and uninhabited island at Zhejiang for 3 months to witness the hatching of the endangered species in a conservation program. There are about 50 such species left in the world.

Commentary:1. Evidence: numbers are referenced from the IUCN Red List, photos showed the

newly hatched birds 2. To what level of the bird population should it be removed from the Red List?

Example of Journal Article: Greenhouse gas fear over increased levels of

meat eating (Sept 1, 2014)

Source: BBC News (http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-29007758 )

Summary: Meat consumption is directly related to GHG emission and can go up to 80% at its business as usual

Commentary:1. Evidence – Reference from a research conducted

by Cambridge and Aberdeen, should be reliable2. What is the link between meat consumption and

GHG emission? Applies to all different types of meat? What is my meat eating habit? How much GHG is contributed by me through meat eating?

Project subject/theme related to the ‘Environment’– The group should discuss and propose the

subject/theme of the group project. It is to be approved by the course instructor.

– This is perhaps the most important decision you need to make for this course, in addition to the choice of the group-mates.

– To avoid choosing a topic that is too easy or too difficult to get information, the instructor will examine your submission before approving the title.

– A list of titles that have been chosen by students in similar course in previous years for your reference.

Project – Group Work

Group size– Four to Five (you form your own group.)– Since all students in a group will receive the same grade,

you will need to find group-mates that you can work with. – Each group should have students from at least TWO

different Schools (SSCI, SENG, SBM) – Changing of group-mates is not encouraged because it is

rarely practiced in actual job environment. – To ensure a reasonably fair distribution of workload, the

instructor will examine the progress of each student in group meetings. Peer evaluation to minimize free-riders.
