Species of Organism

- There are 13 billion known species of organism

- This is only 5% of organism that ever lived!!

- New organisms are still being found and identified

What is classification?

It is the arrangement of organisms into orderly groups based on their similarities

-Classification is also known as taxonomy

-Taxonomy = science of naming or classifying organisms

-Taxonomist = scientists that

identify and name organisms

Benefits of classification

-Uniform and accurate names for all organism

-Prevents misconceptions like starfish and jellyfish are not really fish.

-Uses Latin or some Greek for names

Sea cow isn't really a cow.

Early Taxonomist

-2000 years ago Aristotle was the first taxonomist

- Aristotle divided all organisms into plants and animals

- He divided them based on habitat (land, sea, or air dwellers)

Then came...

- John Ray, a botanist, who used Latin to name organism

- His names were very long and told everything about the plants

Early Taxonomist?Finally came...

-Carulos Linnaeus 1707 - 1778

- Classified organisms by structure

- Developed naming system used today called

"Binomial Nomenclature" (2 names)

Genus & Species

Capitalized & not capitalized

- Nick Name: Father of Taxonomy
