AUDIO ART EMUSIC EXPERIMENTAL
cellF, External Brain ImprovisationcellF by Guy Ben-Ary is a“biological self-portrait”divided into two parts.First the artistreprogrammed his skincells to transform theminto a functional neuralnetwork, defined as his“external brain.” Then hedeveloped a robotic bodyto interface it with anarray of analoguemodular synthesisers. Inboth bodies, voltages arepassed through thedifferent components toproduce data or sound. Ina live event, Darren Mooreperformed music, whichwas fed into the neurons
of the “external brain” as electrical stimulations. The neuronsresponded by controlling the synthesiser. The degree of ‘human’decisions in this performance is the main aspect questioned by theartist. We can go even further here and ask if the influence of non-human components is affecting the production of music in a way thatsounds non-human as well. But this is exactly the artist’s intention – tolive with these doubts while experiencing the reality he created.

tells about his meetingwith Steve Jobs insistingto give him one andshowing him how to draw(even if still in black andwhite): “we went into Sean[John Lennon’s son]’sbedroom–and there was akid there setting up theApple computer that Seanhad gotten as a present, the Macintosh model. Isaid that once some manhad been calling me a lotwanting to give me one,but that I’d never calledhim back or something, and then the kid lookedup and said, ‘Yeah, thatwas me. I’m Steve Jobs.’And he looked so young, like a college guy. And hetold me that he would stillsend me one now. Andthen he gave me a lessonon drawing with it. It onlycomes in black and whitenow, but they’ll make itsoon in color…I felt so oldand out of it with thisyoung whiz guy right therewho helped invent it.”
