Why do cells divide?

How does the cell know how to divide?

The DNA has the instructions for all of the cell’s activities.

1. Interphase - Preparation

2. Mitosis – Cell division

3. Cytokinesis – Splitting

• Adult human cell: ~24 hrs

• 18-20 hours in interphase

• 2 hours in mitosis

• Embryonic cells: 30 min.

3 Parts

How long does it take?

The sequence of development and division of a cell

Page 5: Cell division. KWIIFmg KWIIFmg

•Cell doubles in size

•DNA replicates

•Divided into 3 substages

•G1- cell is growing & preparing to replicate

•S- cell copies DNA

•G2- additional growth for the division of the nucleus

What happens

Page 6: Cell division. KWIIFmg KWIIFmg

•DNA forms chromosomes

•Spindle forms

•Centrioles move toward opposite poles

•Nuclear membrane begins to disappear

What happens

Page 7: Cell division. KWIIFmg KWIIFmg

•Nucleus has disappeared completely

•Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell “equator”

What happens

Page 8: Cell division. KWIIFmg KWIIFmg

•Centromeres divide

•Chromatids separate and move to opposite poles

What happens

Page 9: Cell division. KWIIFmg KWIIFmg

•Nuclear membrane forms around each group of chromosomes

•Chromosomes unwind

•Cytokinesis begins

What happens

Page 10: Cell division. KWIIFmg KWIIFmg

What happens•Cytoplasm divides

•One cell becomes 2 cells
