After completing "The Great Adventure," Gough got hi1 SeNen Actors Guild card. But he took an honorary withdrawal from the Guild and continued teaching. Born in Fon-du-Lac, Wisconsin, Gerald Francis Gough began acting in elementary school. He played Ebenezer Serooge In "A Christmas Carol" while in junior high. At the University of Maryland he majored In speech and drama. He did a lot C1f theatre, including O'Neill's "Long Voyage Home," and "Romeo and Juliet." In New York, be studied with actress Uta Hagen.

He met his wife, Kathr!ne, playing love scenes with her in "Picnic." In addition to acting he worked aa a atagehand at Radio City Music Hall "to keep hnf\y nnd soul together." Shortly llifter their marriage; the Gou.rhe decided to move to Maryland to ftniah school and, after doing more stagaband wGrk, he rot his teaching job at High Point, where for the next nine years he taught history, reography, and Problema of Democracy.

In 1968 Gough was oft'ered the position with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority as Government Relations Oft\eer. He has been with METRO ever since. When time permitted, though, Goueh continued to act. In 1967, for Instance, he played Pablo Gonll8les in "Streetcar Named Deelre" at the Olney Theatre.

His role there as Commander Harry McNeil was caught by alert Greenbelters, who enjoyed his one-minute scene with Martin Landau and Caroline McWilliams.

In addition to television and movieA, Gou~th has made several private·induetry ftlmH for NARA, BNA, NUS, and Westln~rhouse. In one production, he aays, he memorized 20-minute 11 c rIp t apeechea, labeling this "abaolute agony."

Concert Is a lucaels The folk- muaic . eoncea ~ by

"Clam Chowder," held on Friday night, August 28, netted ,l,INO for Children'• Hoapltal, aceordinr to John Ward, b._.,.r for the Greenbelt Cultural Arts Canter. The evening's prorram drew a crowd of over 200 to the Utopia Theater.

Lone, lon• ago, twenty or thirty yeara, maybe, It waa only one's klda that talked back. Then their toya atarted to do the aame thine. First it wu the dolls; you pulled a atrln• and a voice from the little plastic belly made a comment. Uaually it was a pleasant enough observation, like "I love. you, Mommy." Sometimes the tone waa more demanding: "Take me for a walk!"

After a while other toys got into the aet. There were model farms in which the animals mooed and bn.yed and baahd and barked and whinnied. Little garages did their thing and so, later, did little space stations.

e Then came the telephone an

swering devices. They tell you more, sometimes, about the people or ftrm you are calling than you want to know, and with a beep they invite you to do the same. Sometimes their message is so long, you wonder, "Where's the beep?" The telephone company isn't much better. You dial a number and a robot comes on to tell you, "The number you have called," etc. Sometimes the number they recite isn't even the one you dialed, but there's no one but the robot to tell It to, and it doesn't listen, just talks. Reminds you of your kids again, does it? '

But all this is old stuff. Now we have appliances that chatter. "Time to refill the ice cube trays," says the refrigerator. "Add the soap now," insists the washer. "There Is ·not enough light' for this picture," warns the camera, and you get the distinct feeling it wants to add the word "Dummy."

The examples ~o oll. and on. The worst the pin-ball machines ever said was "Tilt," but the video ~~:ames screech and mock and, wont of all, laugh at you.

Automobiles used to buzz when you didn't fasten your seat belts. Later on they changed to a bell

~ like sound, pouibly to make you •::... think, "Ask not for whom the

bell tolls-It tolls for thee." But now thee wilt have no problem getting the answer. A pleasant but authoritative voice gives you to understand that there will be no nonsense about the aeatbelts or anythln8 else. And by the way, you'd better change your oil.

You ml~rht think that these voices wouldn't follow you into a nice quiet library. Wron• ••aln, innocent one. Just approach the copy maker and you will hear, "Check your ·paper alae." The funny thing Ia that nobody says ''ahhl" No doubt there'll be a machine for that real soon.

The bualneaa computer• and the home computer~, of courae, are the worst offendera. I don't know why they call them uaerfrlendly. They talk amon• tbem•elvea, moreover, usually In languarea the names of which I can't even spell. When I waa little I wu told that It wun't polite to do that.

Actually there waa a whole lot more I wanted to aay on tha aubject, but my typewriter just told me that It I• Jolnr on strike for better working conditione, ao I'll have to atop now .
