THE INSTITUTE FOR PRIESTLY FORMATIONMISSION ADVISORY COUNCIL

Mission StatementThe Institute for Priestly Formation (IPF) has been founded to assist in the spiritual formation of diocesanseminarians and priests in the Roman Catholic Church. Working as a complement to already existing programsof seminary formation, the Institute responds to the need for a more concentrated and integrated spiritualformation. Inspired by the biblical-evangelical spirituality of Ignatius Loyola, the Institute’s programs present aspirituality that can inspire, motivate and thus sustain the busy daily lives of contemporary diocesan priests.

Dear Friends,

“To know God from within.” This phrase hasstayed with me since I read it in a talk givenby Pope Benedict XVI at the end of last year. The phrase captured the Holy Father's hopesfor priests everywhere. Priests who "knowGod from within" are those who will be aliveand be the most effective instruments forGod at work in the world. The phrase hasstayed with me because it represents thehopes of the Institute for Priestly Formationfor all the priests and seminarians we serve.

The generosity of many individuals andgroups throughout this past year has helpedthose hopes come true for several hundred participants in various programssponsored by the Institute. From a large summer program for seminarians, toour ongoing programs of spiritual direction training for priests, to a successfulsymposium on diocesan priestly identity and spirituality-these and otherprograms have made our year busy and blessed. What an additional blessing itwould be if all of our benefactors could sense how they truly share in the missionof the Institute, even if they have never been to Omaha or been participantsthemselves!

Looking ahead, I am happy to announce that the continuing generosity of manywill enable us to welcome 130 seminarians to Omaha this summer for the 10-week program for seminarians, a record number of participants. In addition, forthe first time our various summer program offerings will include a retreat forseminary faculty conducted by Deacon James Keating of our staff.

In a few weeks we hope to become even better known in the Omaha community aswe sponsor the visit of nationally known author and speaker, Dr. Scott Hahn.Making our mission better known here and nationally is the task of Mr. P.Thomas Pogge, the Executive Director of our new IPF Foundation.

As we look to the past with gratitude and to the future with great hope we relymost of all on the intercessory prayer of our many friends and benefactors. Please continue to remember us daily in your prayers so that our mission maytruly come from the heart of the Blessed Trinity enabling many more priests to"know God from within." You are always remembered in our grateful prayers.

Sincerely in the Lord,

Rev. Richard J. Gabuzda, Executive Director

When asked what is the mostimportant thing she’s ever done, InezRyan did not hesitate: “Raising my

children.” That meant raising six boys and twogirls: Tom, Mary, Bill, Peter, Jay, Stephen,Susanna, and Frank with her (now longdeceased) husband, Philip.

“I wanted to instill in them a love of God. I triedfrom the very beginning to help my children begood and love being good. The second mostimportant thing? Trying to be good myself.”

Helping other people love God and goodness isprecisely her way of being good. She now focuseson her 20 grandchildren; not bad, consideringtwo of her sons are priests. Inez can speak hersimple words of wisdom because she knows the good God.She recognized His goodness in her loving parents andbrother.

She experienced His goodness in the gift of her wonderfuleducation at Wellesley and Harvard, where she studied arthistory and developed her own artistic talents. And she tastesGod's goodness in the awesome beauty of nature. Who couldcome up with such wonderful shapes and colors (which shetreasures in her shell and leaf collections) and such a startlingdiversity of creatures (which she appreciates in her simplewoodland walks and two African safaries)? Who but a lovingGod with an amazing imagination? And this same God sent usHis Son! He's surely worth trying to be good for.

And worth trying to help others be good for. Inez is deeplypro-life and was once arrested with other “dangerouscriminals” for trying to rescue innocent unborn children andprotect their mothers from the trauma of abortion. Hergreatest pro-life success came when she convinced womenthat God loved them and their children. She found thesewomen the help they needed to choose life, and sometimesreceived pictures from a grateful mother – pictures that meantthe world to Inez.

Helping others to be good: that's why Inez recently donatedstocks valued at $25,000 to support IPF's mission. She wantsto help seminarians taste God's goodness. She wants them tobecome priests who radiate Jesus' love and stir in others thedesire to be good by participating in His goodness.

Inez Ryan: Helping Others Love God and His Goodness

Mrs. Inez French Ryan

FULL OF HOPE“When I first came to IPF, I onlyknew that something good was goingto happen. I didn’t know it was goingto happen to me. I began to find Godin all things and see the world, and thepriesthood, in a whole new way – fullof hope.”

craftmanship of Mr. Ralph Schreuers.

COMMUNITY ANDFELLOWSHIP

“IPF was an experience of pain and growth for me,but at the same time of the great love God has forme. I have never had so many good and loving peoplewilling to help and carry me through tough personalwork in faith. The experience of community andfellowship with fellow seminarians was wonderful.”
