Founded in 2013, the event is in its fifth year and is scheduled to take place November 3-12, 2017. OBX Veterans Week is organized by Dare County Arts Council in Manteo, NC. The workshop is led by Ron Capps and the instructors of the acclaimed DC-based Veterans Writing Project, a non-profit foundation that teaches veterans and service members how to express their military experi- ences through literature. In excerpts from their diaries, letters, oral histories, and pension depositions, as well as from published and unpublished memoirs—generations of women reveal why and how they chose to serve their country, often breaking with social norms, even at great personal peril. Bell is a retired naval officer and the managing editor of O-Dark-Thirty, the literary journal of the Veterans Writing Project.

Of special interest are historic photos that include the German submarine U-117 before her infamous meeting with the British tanker Mirlo, Keeper John Allen Midgett, who was awarded a silver cup for his heroic leadership in the rescue of 42 men from the torpedoed Mirlo, and members of the crew during the rescue. Photos of other local WWI Veterans Harry Creef, Chester Cuthbert Holmes, Robert Fonso Smith, Weston Basnight, and Luck Everton, all East Lakers, are highlighted. Don’t miss the celebration of these local “Heroes Among Us” during OBX Veterans Week.

5th Annual Veterans Writing ProjectSaturday and Sunday, Nov. 4 - 5UNC Coastal Studies Institute 850 NC-345, WancheseThe free, two-day writing workshop will be held at UNC Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese. Beginner and experienced writers will explore this year’s theme of Memoir writing- the art of writing biographical or historical accounts from personal experience. Veterans will be encouraged to continue working on their projects after the seminar and to submit their work for publication in the Veterans Writing Project’s Literary Journal: O-Dark Thirty. All former and current service men and women, and members of their families, are encouraged to attend. Free tuition is underwritten by The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, Midgett Insurance, and the Dare County Arts Council, with generous participation by UNC Coastal Studies Institute. Dare County Arts Council would like to thank the Dare County Veterans Advisory Council (DCVAC) for their support in establishing OBX Veterans Week as an annual tradition.

The Dare County Board of Commissioners created the Veterans Advisory Council in respectful recognition of the service and sacrifice of all Dare County Veterans as represented in all the branches of United States military service.

DCVAC's signature program is the Dare County Veterans I.D. Card. In order to get a Veterans I.D. Card you will need your DD 214 form showing an honorable discharge and a drivers license with a Dare County address.
