What is Celebrating Seniors?

Each year the U.S. Department on Aging proclaims May as Older Americans Month. Unfortunately, May will come and go without much fanfare or recognition for the older adults who have made our communities great places to live. Extolling the virtues of “seniors” who have made significant contributions to our quality of life can sometimes seem patronizing. However, as the population ages and our society becomes “grayer” it is clear that we need to find ways to celebrate our older citizens and highlight the significant contributions that they make in our communities.

Vibrant communities

are in need of both old and young. We cannot and should not expect that as we age we will move from our homes to “Senior Living Communities”. We should expect that as we age, we can age in place. We can stay in our own homes, live independently and continue to contribute in ways that add to the richness of life for everyone. We can continue to shop, dine, entertain, exercise and worship in ways that keep us connected to and involved with our communities.

How did this all get started?

With these thoughts in mind, a small, committed group of volunteers and community representatives from Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park organized

the Celebrating Seniors Coalition. The Coalition began by contacting the Village and Township governments in the three communities to proclaim May as “Older Americans Month” and designate the week of May 6th -13th of 2011 as “Celebrating Seniors Week.”

With the support of local government, the group began contacting “communitywide stakeholders” to invite them to participate in a week of activities for the public that are designed to get people out, involved and celebrating the older members of the community. These stakeholders included libraries, park districts, senior organizations, senior service agencies, hospitals and senior living communities. All were invited to think creatively about how they could participate in Celebrating Seniors Week by hosting an event for the public that would showcase their offerings or provide a specific service. For example a library might have an author speak on an appropriate topic, a senior community could host an Ice Cream Social, or the local park district might invite a swing band to come and perform. The goal of these events is merely to get people out and involved; they are limited only by the creativity of the hosts. The response from the communitywide stakeholders, to date, has been very positive, with many asking for permission to “run with the idea”. With a proclamation in hand and events being

planned, it was time to get local businesses involved.

Local Business Onboard

The Coalition met with local business owners to explain the concept of Celebrating Seniors Week and to invite them to participate. Business owners were encouraged to think about the ways that they currently serve seniors and, perhaps more importantly, to think about what they could do differently to attract more of this valuable business. The response thus far has been positive. Many are planning dining deals, discounts and special offers for seniors. Several are hosting events or offering special promotions during the week.

The Coalition approached Wednesday Journal and thankfully garnered their support as a media partner. The paper also agreed to assist the Coalition in the development of a Celebrating Seniors Resource Guide. This Guide is the linchpin that explains the concept and features all of the events, organizations and businesses that will make the week of May 6th a memorable one for the community.

This Guide is specifically designed to reflect the wants and needs of the senior population. Sections are organized to educate the public about the community’s resources in these areas. Each section contains important information for seniors, including special pricing and other pertinent information.

The Celebrating Seniors Resource Guide also contains basic service information, stories about our most valuable citizens, anecdotes and helpful lists of things to do. Sponsorship and advertising opportunities are being made available to businesses that are interested. Any funds raised from this endeavor will be set aside to help seniors in crisis within the three communities.

At the request of the Celebrating Seniors Coalition The Community of Congregations offered to serve as the Coalition’s fiscal agent and to provide bookkeeping services, tax status and guidance, thus making all contributions tax deductible.

Come Join the FunThe development of

Celebrating Seniors Week has brought the businesses, service organizations and citizens of Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park together on behalf of a senior population that deserves to be celebrated. The week is sure to benefit young and old alike. We hope that you will take a moment and think about the contributions made by those that have come before us. Take a moment and say “Thank you” by celebrating a senior, not just this week but every week.

Sincerely,

Jim FlanaganChairman Celebrating Seniors Coalition

Len Karlin"The first attribute of a

terrorist is cowardice. The second is anonymity. He wants to destroy, but doesn't want to be known … . He takes pride in his handiwork yet retains enough self-re-spect to be ashamed of what he has done." These words were jotted in the early morning hours by an Oak Park Arms resident whose sleep came in parts. A mind alive in the dead of night.

Leonard (Len) Karlin, 87, of Forest Park, was a retired lawyer in 2002. He spent

more than a half-century defending people; never the prosecution, always the defense. His choice. "My prin-cipal clients were the poor, and many times I was one of them. Sometimes I would take a case just to have a case; this even included barter services where doing the diapers were paid in suds."

To the question "What was your most memorable case?" came the reply, "It happened at 26th and California. A hollowed out book containing a loaded gun had been placed in a

desk drawer in the courtroom. At an opportune time the defendant made his move, seized the gun and brandishing it, collared the Sheriff and the Assistant States Attorney as shields, effectively throwing the place into pandemonium. Shots rang out in the melee and a bullet grazed my butt. When order was restored I felt down there and yelled, 'Get me a doctor! Get me a tailor!'" Later, added Karlin, "when the bandages came off, I resembled a hot cross bun."

Len Karlin passed away

in October, 2010. Funny stories notwithstanding, he remained dedicated to the poor and defenseless. His choice. He was an old man, a just man, a wise man and a good man. They didn't come much better.

Lee Brooke

Satisfying his curiosity, at age 13 Lee Brooke tried to make a post-depression

dollar doing tree removal work. After falling out of a tree three times he gave it up. That was in the mid-1940s, and may have been the last time he quit any project. Much later, Studs Terkel would say of himself, “Curi-osity never killed this cat.” He could have been speaking of Lee.

Now in his early 80s, he arises very early to put in another busy day. Not busy-busy; meaningfully busy.

How else to research and write 8 books in 20 years? Books mostly on Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park people, institutions and history - also some travel books - with most on the shelves of our local libraries. And “library” is a hot button word for Lee, having spent 25 years as a medical librarian, then set-tling into the comfortable niche of “town recorder,” not historian, thank you.

Personally, the man is a charmer, a gentleman of the old school with an eye twinkle, an inviting smile and a general interest in what you’re saying. He is often seen with his partner,

Marcy Kubat, a notable River Forest artist and his friend and co-author since 1995. Together, they’ve written nine volumes on the local scene, plus travel and art books. They feel co-authorship may stimulate their thinking, enliven their writing and sharpen their individual efforts.

Brooke’s driving force is not that different from most of us. He’s just more acutely aware of it, and continues to feed his curiosity. To get a feel for the man, what he does and how he honors that most precious of com-modities—Time—read the fi nal lines of Shakespeare’s 73rd Sonnet on age and time

passing; the one that ends, This thou perceiv ‘st which

makes thy love more strong. To love that well which thou must leave ere long.

Mr. Brooke’s latest work, about local people who are active and have attained age 90, is due for publica-tion soon after the First Annual Senior Celebration Week.

Pretty good for a hapless lad who fell out of a tree three times.

xxxSenior SpotlightBy Bob Sullivan

Rose Pestell

Ten pins scatter, and Rose Pestell raises clenched fists in triumph. Her

first strike of the afternoon. Then she breaks into her irrepressible victory dance. The oldest member of the Suburban Girls bowling team was behaving like a 14-year-old—and loving it. Later, she would join her Great Books Club meeting and discuss Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment. All part of the various and vital life she chose. and was able to enjoy.

Born in Italy in 1913, she and her family were pro-

cessed through Ellis Island nine years later. All her life Rose Pestell considered mixed language and mixed knowledge a key to an alive mind. One day she might play afternoon bridge, then discuss politics and world events while cooking for her family—husband Carl Caesar, sons Robert and Bruce, five grandchildren and others.

Ms. Pestlell was an active volunteer for several orga-nizations, and she loved to travel in the company of others, or alone. It’s said she “inhaled” Italian opera at the Lyric and regularly attended orchestral perfor-mances at Symphony Cen-

ter. When asked about her interest in classical music, she demurred with a laugh say-ing only how lucky she was to be living the life she always wanted. Waxing philosophical, she added, “My future is here and I’m living it now.” There was no tenseness in her present-tense attitude; only calm assurance and a sense of easy content.

Rose Pestell, 95, died in

March, 2009 at her River Forest home. A life well-lived and wisely.

TEENS OUT WORKING (TOW)TOW is an organization for Oak

Park and River Forest youth

(ages 14-21) who are interested in

earning money by doing outdoor

chores for local residents. Each

young person has a completed an

application, which is on file with

the township. Before engaging a

young person to help you, please

ask if they have a mower and

other necessary equipment, or

if you should provide it. Since

these are young people, they may

not have the tools for the job (but

they certainly have the energy

and the willingness!)

LifestyleChange:

Rush is a not-for-profit health care, education and research enterprise comprising Rush University Medical Center, Rush University, Rush Oak Park Hospital and Rush Health.

In the second half of 2010, our Center for Diabetes and Endocrine Care transformed the lives of 73 people with prediabetes through Project Lifestyle Change:• 379 people were screened for prediabetes. • 102 people were diagnosed. • 73 people registered for prediabetes education and treatment. • 42 people lost weight — one lost 20 pounds!

All 73 made a metamorphosis.

Because of this tremendous success, the diabetes center is excited to launch the project’s next stage: ExpAnding Our rEAch. The prediabetes education and prevention program is spreading its wings to screen, educate and change lives in Elmwood Park and North Riverside.
