56TH ANNUAL RENO JAZZ FESTIVAL 1

Recording the History of RecordsSlick modern vinyl records have existed for more than 50 years (about the time the Reno Jazz Festival began in 1963). The older, heavier versions date to the 1930s. But you (and all your favorite artists) can thank Thomas Edison for his invention of the phonograph in 1877, pioneering the idea of recorded (and portable!!) sound. #JazzFACTS

WELCOME

Vintage Vinyl Lives OnlineAmazon.com currently has more than 20,000 entries for “jazz vinyl records” including Etta James, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk and many more. #JazzFACTS

The Vinyl FrontierThe most famous vinyl records in the universe (literally) have to be the two Golden Records placed aboard NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2 spacecrafts in 1977, featuring musical selections from different cultures and eras, spoken greetings from Earth-people in 55 languages, and other messages ( just in case turntables exist among the cosmos)…Today, Voyager and those recordings are nearly 12 billion miles out in space. #JazzFACTS

On the Cover (and on the T-Shirts!)Hey, Vintage Jazz Fans, FYI: We followed the layout of the famous jazz BLUE NOTE record labels for our 2018 Reno Jazz Festival program cover design and T-shirts this year. Check out more about jazz vinyl at www.thejazzrecord.com. #JazzFACTS

CELEBRATING OUR STUDENT MUSICIANSHonoring the Future Leaders in Jazz

Peter Epstein, M.M.Chair, Department of Music andDirector, Reno Jazz Festival

reetings and welcome to the University of Nevada’s 2018 Reno Jazz Festival. Since its beginning in 1962, the festival now ranks among the largest, most prestigious musical gatherings of its kind in the

nation. And the University of Nevada, Reno is currently ranked by U.S. News and World Report as a national Tier 1 university. We’ve earned this distinction by the quality of our students, faculty, research activity and degree programs.

As a program within the University’s School of the Arts, the festival supports the school’s mission to inspire “educational excellence, creativity and collaboration.” This year, as we welcome more than 300 school groups, 9,000 participants, and 50 clinicians, performers and adjudicators, we strive to ensure you leave with a greater knowledge, appreciation and love of this incredibly vibrant, quintessentially American art-form.

While the festival celebrates historical standards, it also contributes to the evolution of jazz by championing student excellence, individuality and creativity and, sometimes, challenging the ways we think about and experience the music.

After 15 years with the School of the Arts, it’s an honor to take on the role of festival director this year, where I am pleased to work with the festival’s new assistant director, Adam Benjamin, director of UNR’s Jazz and Improvisational Music Program, and a world-class performer in his own right.

Along with our incredible students, faculty and alumni, and our amazing festival staff and volunteers, I look forward to seeing (and hearing) you during the festival!

GUEST ARTISTS

W ith high praise for avant-garde jazz composer and multi-instrumentalist Peter Apfelbaum, All About Jazz has written: “There's no denying the deep musicianship of his genre-mashing ambition as he blends jazz with a host of world music influences to form a powerfully grooving sound.”

Born in Berkeley, California in 1960, Apfelbaum started playing drums at three, taking up piano and saxophone in elementary school and forming his first band at age 11.

A product of the Berkeley Schools’ pioneering Jazz Project, Apfelbaum began performing professionally in his early teens. In his senior year at Berkeley High, he formed the 17-piece "Hieroglyphics Ensemble" to compose and explore non-traditional musical forms. The Ensemble, featuring classmates including saxophonist Joshua Redman, attracted international attention for their mix of world music with the jazz avant-garde.

Apfelbaum also formed a California sextet and in 1998 he moved to Brooklyn, NY, and soon formed a New York version of his Sextet, featuring Josh Roseman, Charles Burnham, David Phelps, Patrice Blanchard and Dafnis Prieto. He also joined Phish front man Trey Anastasio’s band, played sold-out tours and appeared on the David Letterman Show and the Tonight Show.

His 11-piece New York Hieroglyphics, formed in 2002, toured Europe and has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival and High Sierra Music Festival. Later with the birth of SPARKLER, he focused on dance grooves material. Apfelbaum also continues to perform with the Dafnis Prieto Si o Si Quartet and Sextet, and others.

Peter Apfelbaum kicks off the Festival alongside acclaimed University of Nevada, Reno faculty jazz ensemble, The Collective. Known as one of the most creative and distinctive jazz ensembles in the western United States, The Collective features pianist Adam Benjamin, bassist Hans Halt, drummer Andrew Heglund, and saxophonist Peter Epstein, all of whom also perform and record with a number of other ensembles. The Collective has released four CDs.

THE COLLECTIVE

56TH ANNUAL RENO JAZZ FESTIVAL 5

Opening for Dafnis Prieto and his Sextet is the University of Nevada, Reno Jazz Ensemble’s “The Free Radicals,” directed by Ralph Alessi. The student group, known historically as Jazz Lab Band I, performs jazz standards as well as compositions from ensemble members. A must-see and a must-hear!

omments about Dafnis Prieto from DownBeat, Jazziz, Bass Musician, Glide, Huffington Post and the New York Times: “Superb… exciting… incredible… 4 stars… masterful… trail-blazing… world-

class… unforgettable… irrepressible… extraordinary… Cuban drumming phenom… put this on the ‘Best of the Year’ list now!”

Multi-incredible drummer, composer, bandleader, educator and 2011 MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, Dafnis Prieto gathers superlatives wherever he travels. Originally from Santa Clara, Cuba,  Prieto brings it, with revolutionary drumming techniques and compositions that have had a powerful impact on the Latin and jazz music scenes, nationally and internationally. Prieto’s dazzling Sextet features saxophonists  Peter Apfelbaum and Roman Filiu, pianist Alex Bown, bassist Johannes Weidenmueller and trumpeter Ralph Alessi.

Nominated for and granted the prestigious 2011 MacArthur Fellowship for his incredible work, Prieto’s awards also include 2006 Up & Coming Musician of the Year from the Jazz Journalists Association, a Grammy nomination for  Absolute Quintet  as Best Latin Jazz Album, and a Latin

Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2007. A gifted educator, he has conducted workshops and clinics around the world and has served on the faculties of both the Jazz Studies at New York University and at the University of Miami Frost School of Music.

As a composer, he has created music for dance, film, chamber ensembles, and most notably for his own bands, ranging from duets to big band, and including the distinctively different groups featured on seven acclaimed recordings as a leader: About The Monks, Absolute Quintet, Taking the Soul For a Walk,  Si o Si Quartet: Live at Jazz Standard, Dafnis Prieto Proverb Trio, Triangles and Circles and Back to the Sunset.

His work has been commissioned by such organizations as NY’s Museum of Modern Art, WNYC, and Jazz at Lincoln Center, which included new work for the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. Prieto is founder of the independent music company Dafnison Music, and endorses Yamaha Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Latin Percussion, Evans Drumheads, and Vic Firth Sticks.
