The mission and purpose of the Northern California
Regional Group of the Horseless Carriage Club of
America is to bring together people interested in the
preservation of antique and vintage vehicles and their
accessories, to preserve and maintain antique and
vintage vehicles, and to serve as an accurate and
technical source of information concerning the
vehicles for the benefit of the members and the general
public. We value and enjoy sharing our cars and their
history through public educational events.
THE HORSELESS CARRIAGE CLUB OF AMERICA The Horseless Carriage Club of America is a nonprofit
international association of people dedicated to the
enjoyment, study and preservation of early
automobiles manufactured prior to 1916.
The club was organized in 1937 by a group of
horseless carriage enthusiasts who foresaw the need
for an organization dedicated to the preservation of
automotive history. From this beginning the Horseless
Carriage Club of America has grown to include
members from all parts of the United States, Canada,
Europe and other parts of the world. www.hcca.org

President’s Message:
Spring has arrived
along with beautiful
weather, and old car
activities are starting
to pop up frequently.
April is going to be a
very busy month for
the NCRG with the Pioneer Hook and Ladder
Society Tour on April 9, Bolt Tool Museum
presentation in Oroville on the 16th, the Squires’
Home School presentation In Lodi on the 19th, our
Swap Meet on the 24th and the Garden Tour with the
Metropolitan Club on the 30th. In addition, you
won’t want to miss the General Meeting on the 21st
as Gordon McGregor will be showing a movie
filmed during an NCRG tour in the 1950’s. Seeing
what our club was like around 60 years ago should
be a treat. If that isn’t enough for you, there is the
Horseless Carriage Club Tour and Convention in
Florida from the 3rd to the 8th, the HCCA Grizzly
Bear Tour in Salinas from the 10th to the 13th, the
Bakersfield Swap Meet from the 14th to the 16th, the
Sacramento Classic Car and Parts Swap Meet on the
16th and the Carmichael Elks Club Car Show on the
23rd. Wow, that should keep us busy!
Our club certainly has some old timers in it! No, I’m
not talking about the members; I’m talking about the
cars. Some of these cars have their pictures included
in the March-April 2016 issue of the Horseless
Carriage Gazette. They are featured, along with a
number of other HCCA vehicles, in an article titled
―Century-Old Vehicle Plaque Program: 2015.‖ This
HCCA program is in its 13th year and it recognizes
vehicles that have survived for 100 years by issuing
a personal letter and a brass plaque to the owners.
NCRG club members’ cars receiving the 100-year
plaque and being included in the article are Bob and
Helen Hopkins’ 1915 Hudson Model 6-40 touring,
Dave and Pat Pava’s 1915 Ford Model T roadster,
Tony and Orene Savio’s 1915 Pierce Arrow Model
38 touring and Jan’s and my 1915 Ford Model T
touring. I just hope that I can make it to the ripe old
age of 100 and look as good as these cars do!
Jan and I look forward to seeing you at one or more
of the upcoming events!
Bill

REFRESHMENTS
Hren and McGregor
MOVIE NIGHT!!!
You won’t want to miss this meeting as
Gordon McGregor will be showing an old
film about an old car tour from the 1950s.
Editor’s Message:
One thing about time, it flies! It is
April already! And, when you’re
an Editor, it seems the time comes
around much faster.
Kudos to our club President and
Secretary...they always get their Brass Nuts items to
me in quick fashion. That is my cue to get myself in
gear to get The Brass Nuts out in a timely manner.
Thanks to all of you who give me such nice feedback
about The Brass Nuts. Just remember, if you would
like to see something different in our newsletter, feel
free to let me know. This is your newsletter!!!
My goodness sakes...did you read the President’s
Message? There is no time for boredom in April.
So many amazing things to do!!! Have fun!!!
Sue

Casa Roble High School’s
4th Annual Car Show
By Bill Charpier
Casa Roble High School held their 4th Annual Car
Show in Orangevale on Saturday, March 19, 2016.
Proceeds from this event go to support the school’s
auto shop program. NCRG participants in this year’s
event were Bob and Helen Hopkins with their 1915
Hudson touring, Mike Huff and Stephanie Mozell
with their 1928 Ford Model A sedan, Mike’s sister
and brother-in-law, Anne and Gary Almquist, with
Stephanie’s 1963 Chevrolet Nova SS hardtop, Lynn
and Jeanne Kissel with their 1914 Kissel touring,
Jack and Sandy Maye with their 1969 Dodge
Daytona and Bill Charpier with his 1932 Franklin
sedan. Most of the group met at Bill and Jan
Charpier’s home prior to the show to enjoy some
breakfast goodies including sausages, coffee cake,
fruit, coffee and juice. After a time to visit, the
group drove about 1½ miles to Casa Roble campus
arriving in time to find adjacent parking spaces to
accommodate the cars.
It was a great turnout with around 200 cars on
display. As with past years, folks had the
opportunity to view a variety of cars from antiques to
modern. The weather was on the cool side when we
arrived, but it eventually warmed up to around 70
degrees by the time the show ended. Food trucks
were on site to keep the people ―fueled,‖ numerous
vendors were showing off their wares, and raffle
tickets were available. At the end of the show,
awards were handed out for the best cars in various
categories.
An NCRG booth was set up where information on
the club and the upcoming swap meet were displayed
alongside Mike Huff’s scrap book with photos of
many of our events. The show also presented an
opportunity for handing out our swap meet flyers to
the participants.
All types of cars on display.

Yes...we gave the owners of these two nice Hupmobiles our
club brochure and invited them to join the HCCA!

A Blast from the Past Another stop at the I Street bridge, because the Overland was boiling. Now that just couldn’t be possible. The Overland NEVER boils. But it WAS
and it HAD boiled almost dry. Fill ’er up and an
uneventful trip the rest of the way to Carmichael.
Safe in the garage at last! What’s that hissing noise?
Oh no! Not a flat tire!
END OF DRAMA
# # # # #
Lee Hill says that the reason for so many people
offering advice when he was having trouble on the
Calistoga trip was that they just do not very often get
to see an Overland in trouble as it is an unusual sight.

CONFUSION REIGNS in the Cooper household
since it was reported in the June issue of the Brass
Nuts that Richard and Jean Cooper attended the
Sonora Tour. Now they were wondering whether it
was Gary and Jean Mitchell who were left off the
list or just who had whose husband or what wife was
where, especially since both ladies involved answer
to the name of Jean.
It might help to untangle this confusion if we told
you that actually Gary and Jean Cooper in their
1915 Ford AND Richard and Jean Mitchell in their
1915 Ford all attended the Sonora Tour.
Since we are on the subject of the Sonora trip, did
anyone notice that our new Club Emblem made its
first public appearance there? Elmer Perry had
made a carrying case and brought it along to the last
meeting, but since Howard (Goelz), whose
brainchild the emblem is was not there, it was
decided to show it another time.

The most valuable antique automobile in the world
today is the T-head Mercer Race-about, built in New
Jersey from 1911 to 1914. If you own one, you can
sell it over the telephone for $15,000. Ed Note: Per a March 2007 Hemmings Classic Cars article, a 1911 Mercer
35R Raceabout sold at auction for $1,595,000 earlier that
year.
From the July 1963 Brass Nuts. The NCRG would
participate in the Calistoga July 4th parade every year.
This should be titled:
AN OVERLAND’S TALE OF WOE or
The Troubles of Lee Hill on the way Home
from Calistoga on July 4th, 1963!
By: Gertrude Lines
We hear that someone discovered the Timken
bearings were coming out of the hub cap on the
Overland and probably Lee would have lost a wheel
in another few minutes. The fellows were standing
around like a bunch of Doctors in conference trying
to decide how best to get Lee back on the road.
―Bearings are no problem,‖ says Lee and
immediately produced a coffee can from under the
seat which contained several bearings. Now what
Club member usually carries bearings? Carburetors,
magnetos, fan belts, yes; but leave it to Lee to come
up with bearings.
Somewhere near Helena, his chuck-a-luck whistle
broke so another stop. A service station operator
thought someone was evidently loose from Napa
when they asked if there was a blacksmith shop
around. He was sorry that everything was closed on
Sunday. Finally they found a garage and were almost
finished with repairs when Henry (Vogt) came along
with the trailer. (Fooled you again, still don’t have
to ride on the trailer.)
On the road once more, Lee and Sue kept hearing
this strange rattling, rolling noise. Soon something
fell from the motor. They’d evidently left one of the
mechanic’s tools lying on the motor and it finally fell
out. That’s what you get for being a good Samaritan.
These guys will run off with your tools every change
they get.
Well, that noise is gone but now the hood is flying in
the air and dropping with a ―clank.‖ Forgot to fasten
it down, ―Oh well, we’ll keep going because we
don’t want the whole gang to have to stop again.‖
When that hood decided it would take off and fly,
they just had to stop and anchor it down.

Fashion Page
While the advertisement is for Christmas, you could wear these fashions to any banquet
on tour any time of the year...well, maybe not if it’s 110° in the shade. The lady’s dress is exquisite and has short sleeves which to me indicates any-time-of-year fashion. The lace
beaded panels both front and back add to the drama of the dress. The man’s tuxedo is
fabulous for evening wear. Check out his shoes! Fantastic! Ed.

In Memoriam Martin Palmer
Long time NCRG member, Martin
Palmer, passed away on March 10 of
this year. He joins his beloved wife,
Bernice who preceded him in death
several years ago. He leaves his son
Terry and family.
Martin’s beautiful 1912 Cadillac
remains on view in the California
Auto Museum in Sacramento.
Martin always had a fun tale to tell
about his time in the Navy. What a
character. He will be missed by all
who knew him.
Our sincere condolences go out to his
family.
With Sincere Sympathy
Our sincere sympathy goes out to club member
Jon Long whose father passed away recently.
Jon tells a story about his dad in his NCRG
biography. Circa 1950: Jon related that his
dad and cousin were each given Model A
Fords by their uncle. Jon’s father used that
Model A for years, bombing around his
uncle’s upstate New York farm—tearing off
the fenders, shooting the “sick cow” with
his .22 rifle, and running his brakeless car
into a fencepost. Eventually, his dad’s car
was sold for parts. The cousin restored his
Model A phaeton.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Jon and his
family.

JUST FOR FUN…
An old man lay sprawled across three entire seats
at a concert. When the usher came by and
noticed this, he whispered to the old man, "Sorry
sir, but you're only allowed one seat."
The old man didn't budge. The usher became
more impatient. "Sir, if you don't get up from
there I'm going to have to call the manager."
Once again, the old man just muttered and did
nothing. The usher marched briskly back up the
aisle, and in a moment he returned with the
manager. Together the two of them tried
repeatedly to move the old disheveled man, but
with no success. Finally they summoned the
police.
The officer surveyed the situation briefly then
asked, "All right buddy what's your name?"
"Fred," the old man moaned. "Where you from,
Fred?" asked the police officer. With a terrible
strain in his voice, and without moving, Fred
replied: "The balcony......."
A police officer pulls over a speeding car. The
officer says, ―I clocked you at 80 miles per hour,
sir.‖ The driver says, ―Gee, officer, I had it on cruise control at 60; perhaps your radar gun needs
calibrating.‖
Not looking up from her knitting the wife
says: ―Now don't be silly, dear -- you know that this
car doesn't have cruise control.‖
As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks
over at his wife and growls, ―Can't you please keep
your mouth shut for once!!?‖
The wife smiles demurely and says, ―Well dear you
should be thankful your radar detector went off when
it did or your speed would have been higher.‖
As the officer makes out the second ticket for the
illegal radar detector unit, the man glowers at his
wife and says through clenched teeth, ―Woman, can't
you keep your mouth shut?‖
The officer frowns and says, ―And I notice that
you're not wearing your seat belt, sir. That's an
automatic $75 fine.‖ The driver says, ―Yeah, well,
you see, officer, I had it on, but I took it off when
you pulled me over so that I could get my license out
of my back pocket.‖
The wife says, ―Now, dear, you know very well that
you didn't have your seat belt on. You never wear
your seat belt when you're driving.‖
And as the police officer is writing out the third
ticket, the driver turns to his wife and barks, ―WILL
YOU PLEASE SHUT UP??‖
The officer looks over at the woman and asks, ―Does
your husband always talk to you this way, Ma'am?‖
―Only when he’s been drinking!‖

1930 Model A Two Door Sedan
This is a low mileage survivor. Purchased from the
original owner in 1961 and has been in or associated
with the same family since that time. In '61 it
received some paint work, reupholstering from the
window sills down with mohair, brakes and tires. It
had 19,000 miles at the time and now shows
29,500ish. The original engine was replaced with a
long block in the late '80s (the original engine is still
available), new ignition in 2008, new tires 2013,
new battery in 2013 (Optima 6V). Runs well.
Located in Walnut Creek. $16,000.00 Contact: Rob Squire at [email protected] or call
